Do I HAVE to lower the automatic tranny to get the starter out? I really don't want to but my chiltons manual says to.

Its easier to do it if you lower the tranny..
unless if you have a really long, small and flexible fingers/hand.
its not hard.. just support the tranny with a jack.. tilt it back
you should be able to see the 2 starter bolts from under the car.

Is it an S13?
Then NO you don't.
Get an 18" extension for your ratchet (you'll use this ALOT if you plan on doing any other work on this car) AND a u-joint/swivel. The bolts (2) are 14mm. You might need to unbolt the auto trans dipstick holder to push the wires out of the way (IIRC it's a 10mm).
Since these bolts are part of the bellhousing (connects engine and transmission) they can be very tight -- I use a small 12" section of pipe on the end of my ratchet for additional leverage.
