First: Le backstory

Started with a 97 auto, circa 2010.

Got ahold of Yury @ Wiring Specialties. I used their harness on my SR. They make OEM-style harnesses to better-than-OEM standards. Nothing like a drop-in harness that doesn't have broken brittle connectors. When it came to the LS- they outdid themselves. Cue their new LS Pro Harness

Spent 3 months dealing with GM issues. They decided to send me an LS2 block instead of an LS3, and refused to return it/exchange it. While I waited...

Heads arrived and got some hardware. CNC'd LS3 heads with Manley dished valves, Brian Tooley springs, milled for 11:1. Custom grind Comp Cam also came in.

Tracked down a semi-fsm-like PDF for the LS3, and of course, stuff I missed. So much yet to get.....

Did some wiring. Decided I don't need the fuse block in the glove box anymore, since all that would be on it are gauges. Ran power, and put a momentary interrupt switch where the fan override was. (GM fans are ECU controlled). Now when gauges go crazy and need resetting, can just push a button. (Couldn't reach fuse block glove box anymore due to harnesses...lol.) Then again, hoping some better grounds and notched cups to avoid pinched wires will help avoid future craziness.

Grabbed LED's to try in the S15 cluster, see how that goes. Gotta fill the gap in the wedge socket with some dumbdumb to keep the LED in place. Damn funny T6.5 JDM sockets....

After that, run the wideband wiring, and everything can be reinstalled short of the glove box. Waiting to be able to move the heater core for harness passthrough.


Also hunting down possible locations for the Accusump. Not sure if I'm in love with the under-dash setup. Maybe trunk passthrough deck? IDK.

Took the cam and timing kit to the machine shop, let them degree it vs. spending 100 bucks on timing parts just now.

Ordered some ARP head bolts and some random bits. Also ordered adapter fittings to turn the LS oil pressure sending unit into a 1/8 NPT fitting for my aftermarket gauge. Snagging ~200 in misc missing parts/hardware from GM, some Comp truninons, new set of coil packs, as well as Holley fuel rails and valve covers.

Slow progress while I wait on the block.

Pulled the AC system, clutch master cyl, firewall weight (can't believe that was still there).

Finished wiring the gauges, no way to test it but it should be right, took notes when I pulled everything.

Still need to knock out a few more loose wires and I'll be done, about ready to start putting gauges back in.

Cluster LEDs were shit. Gave it to a friend to solder some actual bright LEDs into the wedge bases.

Pulled the rear bash bar and battery. Bash bar is 2" too big for the PC oven at my usual place, have to try another. Battery system needs an overhaul after the overcharging alternater puked acid everywhere. Batt box and big batt will likely go in favor of a Braille and matching cage

In other news:

Ordered new spark plugs, alternator, clutch, flywheel, and in-bay brake lines. Also got the cluster done....finally. Issue was how little light both the OEM bulbs and the cheapie LEDs put out

After trying to get LED's soldered into the t5/t6.5 base (Which destroyed the bases, tried an OTS backup.

Problem 1: Too big for base. Easily fixed.

Problem 3: Acrylic cover standoff diffusers are too long to fit with these LEDs. 5 minutes with the dremel took care of that.

Small update.

Made my first AN lines today. Steam port kit is a pain to fit, but it'll work. Crossover came out nice.

Got the last of my fuel setup figured out, MAF came in so I can start making the intake. Got the Turn-One PS pump on the way, new alternator installed. (Both with baller blasted T-Nasty brackets) . Secured a Braille B2015 from my neighbor for cheap, and arranging the Mishimoto goodies to be on the way. Dropped off the PCM for the startup tune.

Car goes up the driveway and motor install ~15th. Also the day I order the last of the things to make it start

Headlights fit great on the S15 support and bumper bar, had to flip the crash bar for now until it gets redone. (easier than storing it lol)

While waiting, Wiring Specialties asked if they could give my harness to someone in a big pinch and in need of a harness immediately, told them of course. In return, they'll have a new Version 3 harness waiting for me when I get back from Formula Drift: Miami.

Also made an intake for it, and found some turndowns to use as exhaust for now.

Last parts are arriving soon. Should start before much longer.

Hour+ drive each way in the heat showed me way too much heat is coming into the cabin. Black chassis paint inside radiates all that heat in confined space, goes to other black parts, and cycle repeats, making the cabin an oven.

You just routed the steam port into the upper rad hose? I was considering tapping it into the water pump housing....read around and a few guys had done that successfully...but I like the idea of In to the hose better

It was easier for me, it may get redone at some point. My sensor for my water temp gauge also runs there, tapped on the other side.

What kind of paint did you use?

VHT Engine Enamel. Came out OK for a lazy driveway job. Spots I'm not thrilled with, but w/e. When it gets the full cage I'll have it sprayed fully inside and not worry about it again.

The downside to all that tape was it took off the previous owners tint....so now the windows are bare. Never seen them so see-through. :(

Can you elaborate more on your engine setup? I see that you have a drive-by-cable throttle body with an LS3 block and intake manifold. Did you have to have to swap the reluctor wheel on the crankshaft? Also, which ECU are you using? LS1? I always thought the LS3 ECUs needed the drive-by-wire input to function properly. Also, which car did all of the sensors come from?

Repaint is a mild success. Radiant heat feels less, and trans tunnel is touchable while driving most of the time. Downside is the tint stuck to the tape, so I lost my tint. No bueno. But, it's not an oven anymore.

Back to build-type things. Under lot of WOT, dipstick likes to blow up out of the tube and shoot oil er'rywhere. Apparently common, stock PCV system can only handle so much. This arrives tomorrow:

Today was fix-it day. Replaced a newly-leaking valve cover gasket. Had the catch can installed, and was still squeaky clean/was still getting dipstick explosions, which tells me something clogged my new PCV system. Decided to just bypass it completely and run valve covers to the vented can. Did some hard pulls, everything's golden. Now to just get all that oil residue off....

Also found a new DIN cover from Nissan, and got the single din receiver mounted up. Next week I'll have the tablet setup to do my entertainment, as well as OBD gauges, gps, etc. Until I get the speedo working, it's working for that too.

Catch can was originally inbetween the valley cover and intake manifold, which is the normal LS3 spot since our PCV is tucked under the valley cover. (Though a factory camero I saw sunday had a hard line going from the IM to the drivers rear valve cover port, and no valley port. Must be DoD?). Anywho, I did what is apparently the normal bypass, ran driver rear port around motor to front pass port (Holley VC only has 1 port ea), T'd that into the line coming off the pass port, ran the combined lines into the catch can, then ran that into the TB. Ripped on it all weekend without incident.

Now that the oil explosions are done, time to clean off all that oil.

LOL. I covered my air filter and typically I cover the alternator, but forgot this time lol. Mostly just common sense, cover what you don't want wet. Aluminum foil works great.

I didn't pay that much, I want to say the mani was 150-200, tb about the same.

The differences aren't really comparable, it's phenominaly better. The D port opens up so much more flow than the cathedral port. Best way I can say it is, the Fast manifold for the 3 doesn't really add much, whereas the Fast for the 1/6 adds a good deal. They got this manifold right :P

Sad part for anyone on a 6 is that it won't bolt up without a head swap.

Not gonna lie, this makes me want to build an S14. These days my mind has been wandering to more expensive things (e92 M3, RS4, FD, NSX). Hopefully this is enough to slow things down. Great looking build.

Finally finished the tablet install. Wanted it removable. Got a Nissan radio delete plate, and screwed the Proclip mount into that

Had the tune finalized, runs a decent bit smoother now. Got most of the bugs worked out. Now it's just prep for 200 Drifters of December and order a couple tires.
