So check this out.. I was having some hesitation problems under heavy acceleration. So i changed the fuel filter and nothing.. I found out the Timing was set to 12 degrees (i bought this car from a guy). I checked the Spark plugs and they were gapped to like almost .50!, So i decided to take the plugs out and re-gap them to .35. When i put the plugs back in, i start the car and its runs like crap, the idle is horrible and smokes from the exhaust. The smoke isn't quite blue at all and I checked the radiator collant and no oil, so its probably not the head gasket. So i took the plugs back out and put them back to the way they were. I started the car and still the same horrible idle and smokey exhaust. I pulled each coil to see if it did something and they are all fine. I checked all the vaccum lines and they are fine aswell. I went out and bought brand new spark plugs and Spoke to Jim Wolf. He reccomeded to keep the gap at stock .44, so i did. I put them in and started it up and still the same horrible idle. I am able to rev pass 3k and but the engine isn't smooth.. I am lost of ideas!.. I was driving it before and didn't have any issues.. all i did was change the gap of the plugs and put them back! HELP!

put some tecron fuel injector cleaner in at a 1/4 tank then run it to empty then fill again, unclog injectors and other carbon buildup.

is it rough all the way up or does it smooth out at a certian RPM?

Have you checked the ECU for codes?

what mods does the car have?

Have you checked the IC piping for leaks (use soapy water in a spray bottle)?

Not to sound dumb, but how exactly do you set plug gap? I have a general idea but not exactly sure. (I can change a tranny and clutch but can't set plug gap, whats wrong w/me??? :rl: )

I'll check IC pipes tomorrow.. I know that its rough all the way.. Even if i rev it up, its still rough. I noticed though that i can hear the injectors ticking.. I don't know if its common, but i haven't hard them before like that. What boggles me is that all i did was change the spark plugs.. I don't see what might have caused this.

injector ticking is very common wouldnt worry about it, so if you changed the plugs and this happened, why dont you change back to the original set or start over with a new set.

I've stated before that i've tried that already and it still ran crappy... How do i read codes on the ECU?

there is a little knob on the ack of the ecu, you spin it clock wise until it stops then put the key in the on position (car off) and wait 2 seconds then spin the knob back counter clockwise and there is a little light in the ecu that will start blinking the you count the blinks. slow blinks are 10s (10 - 20 - 30- etc) fast blinks are 1s , so example slow - slow - slow - fast fast is 32. etc

ok, i got a code 12, which is like Mass air flow sensor circuit. I check everything in the MAF and all seem to be good. I reset the ECU and now the light is constantly on. Has anyone ever had this problem? I need help! How do i fix it???

if you have any friends with sr's try to borrow a MAF. it should also take care of the light.

Isnt plug gap more like .030-.035 for the sr? It sounds like you have a bad MAF too.

You use a spark plug gap gauge

here's mine (coin type) ..sorry about the crap quality, can't get the camera to focus very well...

they're available at most auto parts stores, pretty easy to find.

thats what i used, but Jim Wolfe reccomended .44 gap

check the MAF?? could be clogged..try using compressed air to clean it out...

think about it this way.. everything on our cars is run electronically.. sooo.. always check your battery for problems first. check your engine grounds, make sure resistance is under 2 ohm. when i reground my battery, my power shot back up, my idle is healthy again, and my gas mileage went up.. go figure, i spent $300 trying to fix it, then when i replaced the ground.. it cost me $10. anyways.. check that ur battery cables arent touching anything funny, and get some throttle body cleaner, and spray your MAF down. u can always go get a J30 or 300ZX MAF if you cant find another one from an SR. maybe check that your TB is opening up healthy? :ughug: make sure that ur spark plug wires are connected properly to the coil pack.. in the proper order that is. im thinking this is your problem.. hehe, this has to be it.. go check that sucked before your engine goes *pop*
