View Full Version : Rear end that adds 100hp!
hey guys i was talking with my friend the other and he assured me that his 5.0 mustang had to have had an engine swap, he said this because he can only turn one tire over. He said all 5.0s came with lsds, im not sure if this is true but he didnt even consider it could have a swapped or malfunctioning rear end. well does anyone know how to check and see if the 5.0 came stock in thins particular car(by vin #) ok but what got me mad is that this guy told me that "when i swap in the lsd my car is going to gain over 100hp" he didnt believe me that rear ends dont add hp or torque(same gear ratio) can someone please tell me whether they do so i can show him this thread and prove my point.

Different diffs will have different gear/friction efficiencies. Therefore a diff with greater efficiency will put more hp to the ground as less hp is lost due to friction...however, you're not going to see a difference of 100hp...no way.
me that rear ends dont add hp or torque(same gear ratio) can
ok well it wont add 100 hp thats all that matters

indeed, unless you chuck 100shots of NOZZZZ into your differential... the car might feel faster due to different gearing and yada yada yada, but will not add HP.

actually most fox bodies did not have LSD in them it was an option on the GT and very rerely you will see an LX 5.0 with one the only Foxes that had them standard were cobras and the SVO turbo the friction coefficent thing has merit but it would be a miniscule difference
long and short of it that guy is a moron
now in case he retorts with the fact that i own a nissan and therefore know dick about fox bodies i have a mustang that is maintained at an all mustang shop nearby they own 7 fox bodies and i have worked on them for store credit more times than i care to count

Yep. You also mentioned keeping the same gear ratio? Well then the biggest REAL difference is going to be with better traction.

awesome!!! I just picked up a 95 J30 VLSD tonight. So I'll get better traction and 100hp!!!! Note the sarcasm.... NOTE IT!!
Anyway, I was talking to a friend (who is into trucks and bikes) and told him I was getting a LSD soon and he looked at me and said "drugs will ruin your life"...... me-"LSD, as in limited slip differential....posi-traction" hahaha

i think posi-traction is GM's trademark, i can't remember what ford's is. LSD is a general term so it still works.

It definitely is GM's trademark. I know that Dodge calls it "twingrip"....err...used to in the days of positraction

positrack is just a name like trac-lok (for rangers) and stuff like that. anyhow, people like this irritate the piss out of me. it's like this one time a friend of mine tried to tell me that a high stall and a torque converter were different.... instead of being HIGH STALL TORQUE CONVERTER.
sheesh
