pretty much what it says, once i sell my car, im goin to buy a newr 240 with less miles, im looking at buying the greddy bolt on turbo kit for, but saw it doesnt come with a smic or fmic, i was wondering to what specs it is possible to run a turbo kit with out intercooling if at all, and recommendations, im considering this because i dont have enough funds to purchase an intercooler, thanks

#1 do a compression test on your engine to see if its turbo worthy. mileage isn't nearly as good of an indicator.

#2 if ur comp is bad, imo it'd be far simpler (and prob cheaper) to buy a used ka with good compression and swap it into your car.

#3 if ur strapped for $$$, do some research and piece together your own kit for less $$$. i dont know if u can run the greddy w/o ic, but if i was going to blow 3k on a kit i would do it the right way.

would you like it better if i attached a hose to a vent and made you breath through it if the heater was on, or the A/C? Your car will give you the same answer.

Baahhhhhh....

Everyone thinks as an intercooler as a NECESSARY piece of hardware with a turbo...not so.

Now, will it reduce intake air temps and the likleyhood of detonation, and more power to boot...yes.

But does that mean it will blow up w/o one...no.

A GReddy 20G, like the one that comes with the kit, will be pretty damn efficient at only 6psi, the advertised #. And while compressing air WILL heat it up, with a nice efficient compressor, it's not that bad.

I have a spreadsheet that does the math for you (assume 85* ambient air temp):

At 6psi, with a compressor that is 70% efficient at that boost level, the outlet temp will be only 166 degrees.

An intercooler that is 70% efficient (pretty good) will cool that charge to 109 degrees.

But a 57 degree difference will not mean the engine will blow up or detonate.

And of course, the air gets exponentially hotter as the boost goes up, but at 6-8psi, an intercooler is not neede. Run a little less timing, or a little more fuel...

[/rant off]

Now for empirical data:

I ran for months with no intercooler. Dyno'd 224rwhp at 6psi...my car was making about ~150rwhp in the same trim when it was N/A, so I gained 74rwhp, or about 12rwhp per PSI of boost.

Added an intercooler, tured the boost up to 8, and dyno'd 248rwhp. 24 more RWHP, at 2 more PSI...still at 12rwhp/psi. No huge gains there...

So while it is safer, IMO, at only 8psi, it's really not worth it for the power, IF you pick a reasonably efficient compressor for you motor.

Hope that helps - Brian

thanks for all the info, brian that info was very very helpful, exactly what i wanted/needed to see hopefully all goes according to plan and ill be boosted near future, oh btw, if i were to piece together my own kit, what price difference would i see?
