So a few months ago I went out and picked up a 93 s13 ka24de with auto trans. Three days after buying it the timing chain guide shattered and damaged the motor. I decided to pull it out and rebuild everything. This has been my first rebuild experience. I'm not a noob. But I am still young and inexperienced. So I know I have much to learn. That being said, I pulled the motor and trans as an assembly. Did the full rebuild with no major speed bumps. Dropped everything in, wired up and went to turn the key, starter kicked and the engine fired up, idled, sputtered then died. After this, every time I turned the key the starter gave me nothing. I pulled the starter back out to investigate only to find it in pieces. I forgot to put the shim between the motor and tranny... pulled the whole thing out again. Replaced shims, and in the mean time decided to do some engine bay "Get rid of shit" EGR and vacuum delete along with anything that was broken. Now I have put everything back in. My reverse lights are now on while the shifter is in park, nothing happens when I turn the key. I have no power to the blower motors or dash board. Coolant lines that probably aren't run properly and its a good possibility I got rid of some somewhat important stuff. So my problem is.... I'm lost. Very lost. And I'm not sure where I should start. I've got a mess of an engine bay and many many small problems that need to be addressed. Any advice would be surely appreciated. I'm really excited about being in the 240 game and just wanna get this baby back on the street. Any helpful words of wisdom?

looks very similar to my coupe. same color and black hood. all i can say is take it slow and don't give up. i've been dealing with a similar situation too. i had some wiring issues and when i went to sort the wiring out i decided to delete a bunch of emissions and vacuum stuff too. now my car wont start and i'm trying to troubleshoot it too. just take it one step at a time and think of everything logically (what does the car need to run, is everything hooked up properly). maybe find an experienced 240 friend to take a look at it. i wish you the best of luck, hopefully you can get her back on the road soon

As for why it started then died I would suspect the timing was off.
My starter gear blew up on my sr when it got locked out not retracting, maybe something similar happened. That shim is a dust cover doesn't cause any major issues if not installed but its wise to install it. Check the plugs on your transmission sounds like you have reverse and park sensor swapped. Also check for the single small wire on your starter. It likes to wiggle off causing no reaction. Check all fuses, I took out my blower motor and tested it only to find it good and I had a blown fuse. Can't remember if I lost dash lights as well. As far as engine components it should be pretty easy to tell if its needed. You don't want any bare holes into your engine. Make sure the idle air control valve is still on there. Other than that just take your time.

dont let my post discourage you but, read read read and when you think your done reading.... read some more. dont try to do things without some sort of manual and direction. im pretty experienced on these cars and as a mechanic in general (general aviation and military aviation) and i still follow a manual on everything i do. youd be surprised at the little things you forget when you are trying to do it by memory. remember the 10% rule, write down 90% of everything else.

Yes that picture was taken behind tires plus. The car is currently parked at raffield on rocky creek.

I have a digital copy of the fsm and have been trying to follow it to the best of my ability but not everything makes total sense.

Ok. Starting problem fixed. Got her to fire up, she will idle for about 10 seconds and then bog out. Play with the throttle a bit and she will stay running. Now I just have an assload of air Amd vacuum leaks to track down. One step closer every day.
And another question. My entire dash is inoperable. The backlight for the odometer lights up but nothing else. Somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the motivation. I can't let this baby go. I let my last 2 z31s go and I regret it so much. I'll keep the thread updated.

This was my first motor rebuild experience, so I'm patting myself on the back for the simple fact that she fired up. :D
