Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone on this forum goes to UTI auto tech? I am looking for a good college to go to and UTI sent me some stuff in the mail and it is very interesting.

If any of you guys do go to one of UTI's school, then I would like to talk to you guys on aol, msn, or yahoo messenger about the school.

If you dont have a messenger then I'll chat to you on here.

thanks

Here's the link to the main homepage of UTI.

a few guys i knew from high school went to the one in phoenix and finished the program, they really didnt seem to learn anything, they just rely on the scan tool heavily. they were working at a dealership making like around 10 an hour. there in debt from that school. in the end i dont think they would do it again.

Tech school is stupid. I went to Lincoln Tech, a UTI competitor up in Chicago, and it was totally useless. That's what everyone from tech schools says: it's useless.

tech/trade schools are a joke, but unfortunatly can be a requirement in some feilds to get hired. I really didnt learn much of anything useful from dive school, it was fun though. Just look as it as a really expensive introduction to the industry, but you will learn 10 times more stuff your first month working in the feild.

I'm leaving for UTI in about a month and some change. Should be fun, I just want the Porsche PTAP training. IBo-face

good luck getting into porsche, your gonna have to take pretty much every program to get into there. and they only pick one student a school.

from what i heard, last year at aroudn this time, they were giving out free courses in regards to bmw's lineup. me and my cousin were going to take that free 2-year course in rancho cuchamonga, minutes from cali speedway, but were kind of skeptical about a tech school and location... anyone hear of any free course this year? the bmw lineup had a lot of demand last year, so if anyone went last year good shit or no? all i know was that bmw was more like a hands on intern for them at that time and by the end of the course you're almost guaranteed a job from bmw. i dont know the salary though.. i'm thinking it might be nice because of the abundance of bmw cars n the prices on those shit.

Actually, Porsche selected 53 out of 362 students that applied last year.

I Grad. from UTI basically if you don't know anything about cars, you'll learn something. mostly everything you learn is on a basic terms like everything they teach is not fully in dept cause they need to give you as much information in little time so "we can get into the field and work right away". Also some of the stuff they teach you, you'll probably won't use in the field but maybe use it if your building your own motor or something. Everyone has their own preference on the school, some say it's good some say its crappy.

from what i've heard and seen from videos, their facilities are really nice.

my cousin went there and it was basically a big waste of time. i went to itt tech for 2 years and have an associate's degree and that was pretty much wasted money.

go to a real college. it's cheaper and you will not regret it.

I'd suggest like a community college as an alternative to a Lincoln School or UTI. Its MUCH cheaper. Also, I don't really know of very many shops that will require training. Most of them just want ASE certs. They send you for their own training anyway.

im thinking about signing up. i deliver food full time and Im barely getting by, as for me going to cc is a little much, maybe part time could of been better for me but not full time. so UTI might get me on a better track, Ill fully understand cars inside and out, which I can use to get to my ultimate goal which is engineering

Knowing a shit load of math and science is what's going to get you into engineering. You're not going to get there by paying 30K+ to learn to change oil at UTI.

I went there and it felt like a giant waste of time. Dropped out, still paying Sallie Mae.

This question was asked not too long ago and got a lot more in depth replies. Here's the link, judge for yourself:

If you can't afford community college, you definitely can't afford the tuition at UTI.

If your interested in learning about cars and getting a good job, Go to your local college and see if they offer ASC or I-Car certifications. If your get a few ASC/I-Car certifications you can pretty much get hired anywhere. They offer classes in auto-body work, brakes, suspension, A/C, diagnostics etc... and is probably 1/8 the cost of UTI.

Friend of mine went to UTI in Sacramento and he has a crappy job busting tires at Sears for $10 an hour.

Another friend of mine took a couple ASC classes for brakes/suspension and I-car for collision/paint work. He makes salary and it averages to about $20 an hour if not more.

All of this is completly true. In any field for that matter. My companey throws away applications from tech schools. Just try really hard to get in where theres an opening. Get some experience and go somewhere better. You will be in a waaaaay better position, or go to a real school.

those schools should be illegal. they're a scam and a joke. good luck getting a real career. they'll just leave you in debt.

go to a community college. cheaper and can do anything you want.

Im not joking when i say i think they should be illegal. i REALLY think all those types of schools should get sued man, all they do is take your money -.-;

I think the schools might help you get a job, that is if you are mechanically inclined to begin with.

My friend went to wyotech (I think) and is a master diagnostic tech for toyota. He is one of three people I know who went and did anything with it.

If your ultimate goal is 'engineering' then math & physics is what you need to work on.
I barely passed Calculus 1, and some of the most basic physics class I took needed much more math than that.
CC is a much better place to start if you're interested in engineering, imo.

I like the idea of the knowledge installation/motivation/marketability enhancement/autohire shop. You have to admit it's pretty cool in theory.

run far far away from UTI, I went when all the courses were "only" 25k. i took everything, each class yielded a few new interesting facts, but for the price of UTI, you can go to a real college, get a REAL bachelors degree that will get you a REAL 80K / yr job.

no one wants to come home with greasy hands, and back pain... make a smart decision for your future.. dont blow it away at UTI

I know a few guys who have gone to UTI. Let's just say I have a friend who works at Sears Auto Center with no such schooling and is doing better than the guys who went to UTI.

hope someone actually takes into consideration for what I'm about to write:

I am currently attending UTI Glendale Heights, IL and when I first started I was really exited but by the time I was on my 4th class I realized that it was not the “Best of the Best” as they claim to be.

My reason for writing in this forum are simple. I’m just really disappointed with the school and is definitely not the “Best of the Best”. Classes are overcrowded definitely not smaller than 25 students some time there are more students than places to sit, in two different occasions I had to sit at the end of the table and was extremely uncomfortable.

I was told before I attended that classes where going to be small big enough for the instructors to have enough time for what they call “Lab time”, and more hands on. Unfortunately all they told me was not really accurate.

When they tell you will have “Lab time” they are more concentrated in filling your lab sheet that the State requires them to be completed. So far I had very little experience on taking things apart or repairing. Since there are usually more than 25 students and one instructor (with the rare occasion of another instructor helping out for one day due to the fact that all instructors are required to work one double shift) there is not enough time to help all the students understand what they are working on, you always have to wait a long period of time for the instructor to help out. Once you complete your lab assignments about 95% of the time they are not check over so your Lab grade is always 100% with the exception on your lab final. If you didn’t understand what you worked on when you did your lab sheets you have a bigger chance to lower your grade since lab final is 30% of your grade. Most instructors just glance at your work and give you the full grade.

Class time well its class time. There has been many time where I have just showed up to school and do nothing all day just to take my Lab exam and on the next day is the same thing, show up to take your final exam but the rest of the time is just a waste of time. They call this study time but for me is them taking my money for doing absolutely nothing. If your late or leave early you get an infraction even if your there wasting time.

Over all what they call the “best of the best” is just perfect attendance nothing more. They will reward you for having perfect attendance right after your first class by them inviting you for lunch and for every 3 courses you continue to have perfect attendance you get a new ID badge stating you have so many courses completed with perfect attendance. If you continue on the same route on your 12th course you get this nice shirt that says “BEST OF THE BEST”. Don’t get me wrong if you try hard enough and get the best class grade you are given a pin stating your are the “Student of the Course” and a parking spot assigned to you for the next course. Isn’t that nice?

Financial aid, well its financial Aid they there to convince you to add more electives.

The instructors, some are good but some don’t not have business teaching and some definitely are good.

Think about what I have say. I wouldn’t take the time to write all this is it wasn’t true.
For all that are debating this school I hope you make the right choice and good luck in your career. I would have preferred Wyotech..

Thanks for reading.
David

now a days, its a matter of someone giving you the chance to work. I went to a tech school for something else, but even that sucks. You apply for jobs and its on the employer if they want to accept your "paid" school background or not.

My post from this thread, still relevant

I also went to UTI, got a 4.0, Got accepted to PTAP program, run my own indy euro shop.

99% of my classmates spent most of their time fucking off. I purposely sought out the other 1%, made it a game, talked shit, competed with and stuck with them. Every person I willingly associated with is now successful in their endeavors.

Manufacturing engineers with OEMs, Master Techs with OEM dealers, Professional Raceteams in Nascar, ALMS, NHRA, Aftermarket and OEM Suppliers, The people that had the desire and motivation to succeed, did.

The 99% of immature and irresponsible children I was forced to endure during my time at UTI are almost entirely slinging fries or working the drain pit at Jiffy Lube.

Much like Snap-On, UTI is only a tool; an expensive tool, but a tool none the less. It is possible to rebuild civilization with string and geometry but not nearly as fast as with an excavator and a concrete plant.

The information available at UTI is no different than other NATEF certified programs, such as local community colleges, it can't be. The real benefits come from the people and opportunities you are exposed to.

Shit, if you just want the information, I'll sell it to you, $2K cash, every single piece of information from UTI, hardcopies of every test, books, study guides, everything. Fuck I'll even dupe you a diploma. None of it will do you any good without motivation.

stay away from "trade" schools like that. its such a rip off.

I go to a community college that runs an auto program and its by far 100% better.
We even have Former Wyotech students in the class who say its better.

it consists of 7 separate classes.
Suspension & steering
Diagnosis 1
diagnosis 2
Brakes
Electrical
AUto trans
manual trans

each class 1 hr of lecture time and 4 hrs of actual Live customer work.

So you get a real feel on how to diagnos and repair, instead of having to work on "donated" cars and never knowing if your "repair" lasts or not

In all honesty its like having an actual job while being there..

All in all you get what you put into it. and that goes for any trade school or classes.

yea and that was from all applicants not just uti.

went to uti. wasted so much time and money. I have lost count of how many people I have told to avoid this scam. Go there for a year and owe them $25k+ ( i think its well over 30k now) or go work in the field learn more and actually earn money.

Guess what, you go to uti and you are going to come out and be a C tech. You will not be making flat rate you will be slinging oil and tires and doing my bitch work. Hey someone's gotta clean my tools and I only accept the best uti grads, and if you do a good job I will teach you more in a week then what uti spent a year teaching you. :mephfawk:
