So I'm 2 days away from having an expired tag, so I went to get the car inspected. yadda yadda yadda... he tells me I barely passed because of an exhaust leak at the cat and my tires are almost gone (this I know)...

I go to the dealership to get a new gasket (10 bucks.. ouch), and as I am heading home, I start hearing a damn rattle coming from under the car. Apparently the guy must have tugged on something under there, maybe a shield or something. I put the new gasket in but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The leak is gone but the rattle isn't. It does it usually as I downshift or come to a stop. It also does it when I rev the car...

damn it...

ummm, I'm sorry? are you asking for advice or just felt like sharing? Just get under the car and have a friend that you trust....haha.. rev the car since you said it does it when you rev.

That reminds me, my plate expires tommorow....

sounds like how my car rattled. turned out to be the heatshield on top of the cat. Its pretty long and wedged against the underbody of the car, but you can unbolt it and take it off. That fixed mine right up.

might be the heat sheild....or your exhaust hitting something.

Ya...they rattle.........just jam as much steel wool above the sheild as possible........and between the exhaust pipe and the shield also if you can get in there (rust holes etc). I did this and it works great.....but you have to really jam it up in there with a screwdriver.......I got 4 peices in there.

Common problem on may cars. It's most likely the heat shield like everone said.
