Machine shop prices

So im rebuilding my ka24de.

This is all pretty new to me, but I think I'll make it through. I've gathered most of my info via searching, but I have a few questions.

First off, I have the engine completely disassembled. When I take it to the machine shop, do they want the bottom end and the top end pre-assembled? Can I just bring them my pistons/rods/bearings/etc and let them fuck with it?

How much do you think it would cost approx to get my block bored over .5mm, tested for cracks, and resurfaced? Anything else i am missing?

Also wanna know how much to expect to pay for the shop to install new springs/retainers/valves. Check clearences, check for cracks/warped.

What about the valves, I have heard of people using undersized valves, this confuses me? Do i want oversized valves, and let the machine shop do the adjustments.

I plan on forced induction in some time, but not just yet, I can live with a slow car. I want to build this to be reliable also. Do you think .5mm is too much? I dont want to jeperdize reliablity for speed.

Prices vary from shop to shop. Also some shops might charge more because they consider themselves to be a better shop. As for the headwork, you should just send it in to DPR and have them work it over.:)

any rough estimates on the bottom end? I just wanna know if I need to save $500 or $5,000 . I wanna keep it all pretty reasonable in pricem you know. I am pretty broke, but if its going to be apart, I better do a good job on it. Easier done now than later.

you could buy a good working engine for 500 so i highly doubt it would be too high, but your best bet is to find shops in your area and ask them about it.

Machine shop work is expensive at least for a place that does it right there is a lot of work that go's into a bored block. A good shop paints the block also mine is painted black but you can get any color you want this is usually included in the charge for the machine work.

any estimated prices? I know its a shot in the dark, but I really want to know what to expect. Hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands? etc...etc. any futher information on the machine shop process, and pricing would be greatly appreciated ;]~~

your best bet is to seriously just call around and get an estimate from several shops telling them exactly what you want done.

i think my friend payed 1000-1500 or so to have his crank polished, block cleaned and magnafluxed for cracks, his engine bored, assembled and everything for the bottom end...hope that helps. thats just the labor of course. parts cost him more.

Another thread jack, but how much round about does it cost to get the head machined after a blown head gasket? Will I need to disassemble it? Thanks

O-ring block: $100
Deck block: $55
Shave head: $45
Valve job: $175
Align bore mains: $80
Resize rods: $60
Grind crank: $60
Balance: $150
Hot tank: $45
Final wash: $35
Hone cylinders: $60
Port and polish: $400
