are there serial numbers or pumpkin housing differences visually that differentiate the two?

well im not too sure but i know vlsd usually have an orange sticker or something, also if it is still on car turn wheels and if they turn the same then u have vlsd and if opposite it is regular but maybe you already knew that.

yeah. i knew about the wheelspin thing. i'm needing to know visual cues when someone posts pics for me of the unit out of the car. i want to know i'm actually buying a true VLSD and not a scam.

Just have them take a picture with the rear cover open.

that is a great idea. now what should i look for with the rear cover open? i'm a noob to this.

VLSD on the left, open diff on the right. Main differences are the orange sticker, and the shape of the rear cover plate/heatsink arrangement from my experience.
