this may be a stupid question but im having a hard time deciding on a build route to go, ive read up on alot of different things and i think its time to commit.

ive thought of rb25 sr20 and kat or kar, i think since i have a ka already the ka might be my best option, but im kinda having a difficult time deciding on a hp goal. ive driven a few cars but im still unsure on a goal, im thinking 280-300 would be plenty fun for a dd car but id hate to want more later. any input would be appreciated

Better question for now is what's your budget? RB25 swap is pricier and the initial investment is pretty steep compared to going SR. RB25 swap is pretty much in the same level as an LSx swap once you start adding up the support mods for it.

id like to put probably no more than 3.5-4k in it which eliminates the rb25 swap, so i guess my question is sr, ka-t or ka-r?

Since your goal is 280-300 I would suggest going the KA-T route.
About $2K-$2,500 should do the job.
I'm SURE with just a stock internal KA-T w/ boltons +T28 & E85 should hit 300 easily.
But then reliability comes to play lol. If you plan on boosting your KA without any internal work / rebuild... Be sure everything is in decent condition.

For $2.5K(ish), a stock SR swap will get you into the 250-260 range...If done smart, you could make 280-300 with only basic add-ons and an Enthalpy/JWT ECU tune. $4K would be cutting it close considering the nickels/dimes that come along with the swap... In that respect, I'd recommend KA-T if your budget is strict.
