5/20 Was going over a speed bump and there was a pothole on the other side, didnt see it, well front end slammed down. And then soon as I pull out of the parking lot and start accelerating I hear a ticking in the engine. Get home (2 mins away) and shut it off for 30 mins. Turn it back on and can hear the tick mainly at low rpms, and once it heats up to where the temp guage is halfway I cant hear it at all anymore, at any rpms. I looked under my car later that day and found out I slammed my exhaust down hard, had a bunch of black asphalt and yellow paint from the speed bump on it.

5/21 Checked my oil pan, dont think I dented it at all, and my oil level is fine. Dummy light doesnt come on or anything. I pulled the valve cover off and I have no upper guides, the tensioners look fine and so does everything else, and with 262k miles I assume the previous owner did the tensioner/chain replacement. There seems to be plenty of oil around the valves and etc.

-From what I can hear the sound Seems to be coming from the botton of the engine somewhere. Even when cold I dont think I can hear the ticking unless its under load, ie im driving, just revving with no load I cant hear it.

Any ideas?

Possibly an exhaust leak. Happened when my MR2's exhaust manifold warped due to age/abuse. It would sort of screech/tick when I started it up when cold, but once hot the metal would expand enough to provide a tight seal. (This was on the exhaust manifold flange and the head met)

Might be worthwhile to check your flanges/exhaust bolts/studs.

Is it a ka24e?.... my old S13 did that and all mechanics and freinds said that it was just the lifters sticking...
