if i had to guess i would say it had an air pocket in the cooling system.

When I flushed the radiator and changed the fluid it happened to me a few times I had to take short drives and add more coolant as I went since my driveway is inclined the air bubbles in the system were a pain.

i've experienced the same problem after changing my water pump and radiator. water pump was bad. the radiator became bad when i tried to remove the hose from the top the plastic just fell apart. and in my case it was air pockets. i had to bleed the system a few times before the temp gauge would stay consistent. and that was over a week of driving it back and forwards to work, etc.
i'd advise bleeding it more maybe over a week and watching what the temp gauge does. if it continues after a few bleeds you may want to look into something else.

KA's can be notoriously bitchy to bleed. Jack up a bit, and put a funnel adapter kit on it and let it idle.

OP did you try topping off your coolant yet?
had the same issue when I changed all that stuff & I didn't put enough coolant in.

Coming from a long time ka owner that's swapped coolant a million times on it:
Get oem thermostat.
Buy this: Lisle 24610 Spill-Free Funnel : Amazon.com : Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-24610-Spill-Free-Funnel/dp/B001A4EAV0)
Or install this:
Amazon.com: Circuit Sports Coolant Breather Tank: Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/Circuit-Sports-Coolant-Breather-Tank/dp/B004GQZYI2)
//End thread//

Yes it stopped after adding coolant like five times. I should have just let it idle with the cap removed while adding as needed, maybe giving it a few revs that worked on my Toyota T100.
