Anyone have a router and are familiar with them?

Heres the lowdown:

At the house at previously lived at off campus of school, we had a router with six computers hooked up to it. I had one of the kids in the house set my computer up for it. Networking i guess? I dont know that much about computers, but i do know a little.

Anyways, school ends, i moved back home and i go to best buy and buy a Linksys router. It is a wireless model with four ports in the back incase you want to use cables instead of wireless. I am not using wireless until i get my new laptop. I have this computer (DELL with XP) hooked up fine, everything works.

Now, My sony vaio with WINME doesn't work when connected to the router. It works when i connect it directly to the cable modem. But wont read a signal from the router when connected to the router.

The router/host computer is suppose to assign IP address's to each computer. When i do Command in Run and then type in "IP CONFIG /ALL" it says IP routing is disabled. I think this might be one of the problems.

I talked to the manufacturer of the router (linksys) THREE different times and they couldn't help at all. I did everything they wanted me to do, and nothing has worked.

I dont know what to do. Maybe someone can help me out.

ANYONE PLEASE

Are you sure you have the Sony pc set to DHCP or "Acquire IP Adress Automaticly" THen make sure you have the gateway set as your routers IP, something like 192.168.1.1 i belive

IP routing isn't the issue, it would be if you were connecting more than one computer into the WinME 'puter (i.e. makine WinME perform as a router rather than the linksys)

Are you using the same cable to plug the computer into the router? try switching the cable that you're using to plug the WinME computer in, with the cable from the Dell.

yes it could also be your cable, sorry i dont have time to go into it, but there are two cable.

a crossover and a straight through, you want to use a cross-over cable

how about disconnect your dell and connect your sony to it. and see if it still the same i mean there could be a conflict somewhere

Mine is 192.168.0.1, it's a D-Link wireless though, not sure if that makes a difference...

No, you dont want to use a crossover cable.

First of all make sure that everything is connected properly and that both the cables are good. Test the cables by trying both of them between the cable modem and pc and seeing if they work. Then make sure you connected everything properly. The modem connects to the "WAN" port and the pc connects to 1-4 (not uplink).

If that doesnt work, sometimes with crappy win9x, its better to just set the ip staticly.

you would want to do something like this:

IP Address: 192.168.1.107
Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Then see if you can connect to the router by putting http://192.168.1.1/ in your web browser.

It should ask for a login (default is no user name, password "admin") and if that works get the dns addresses of the router and put them into the pc's configuration.

Im not familiar with Linksys, but try googling your problem. When I need to configure my router, i go to Start->Run-> and type in "telnet 192.168.0.1" If that works and it asks for a password, the standard password is usually 1234. Hopefully that helps
