I've been lurking the forums for a long time but hardly ever post, so I figured I might as well post a build thread since Winter is almost here.

I'll start off by saying that this is my first car that I've ever done any type of work on by myself (other than some simple audio installation and typical oil changes) so I have learned basically everything I know from working on this car.

I had originally planned on buying a S14, but after countless weeks of searching with next to no luck, I came across this car and decided to pull the trigger on it. A 1990 300zx N/A with 52k original miles on it. It was priced for a steal, or so I thought. (Given everything that I later found to be wrong with it, I still think I got a pretty good deal on it.)

Anyways, on to the build:

The day I bought the car (had to back the car onto the trailer because the only way the auto tranny would go was reverse.)

The engine bay was a mess when I bought it, the previous owner had completely neglected it. This pic was taken after I had already started taking things apart for the pull, but you get the idea.

Lovely injector wiring that had been rigged by whoever had previously replaced the injectors.

The car originally came with an automatic transmission that was busted when I bought it, so I picked up a 5 speed swap off of a local.

Obligatory clutch pedal/auto shifter shot

Spent the next day removing the auto transmission

Extension I had to piece together to get to the top bolt on the bell housing. Was a PITA
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/10.jpeg

Didn't get any pics of the transmission being taken out, but once it was out I pulled the motor. Plan was originally just to replace all the gaskets/seals and do the 120k maintenance on it, but ended up deciding I didn't like anything that was going on in the bay at all.

Started off with some weight reduction

Left off here for a couple weeks, ended up getting really busy with school and work and didn't have that much time to work on the car. But finally I got caught up on things and was able to work on the car again.
There's a lot more progress past this point, I'll update soon.

Never realized this got approved. Anyway, here's an update.

Started going through the engine. The outside looked like shit but the inside was surprisingly not bad.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/29.jpg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/25.jpeg

Went ahead and deleted the egr
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/24.jpeg

Debated on whether to polish the plenum or powdercoat it..
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/22.jpg

Got tired of looking at the nasty valve covers so I painted them white. They will be powder coated eventually, but for now paint will have to do.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/31.jpeg

While the engine was out, I decided the bay could use some major degreasing. Loaded it onto the trailer and got it nice and clean.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/32.jpg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/35.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/34.jpeg

Here is where the real fun began. I loved the z32 chassis but absolutely hated everything about the engine bay. I had already gotten rid of the cruise control, AIV, EGR, PRVR, Carbon Canister, and PCV.. so figured why not take it a little further....so the bodywork began.

Started off by cutting out the rust. My goal here was also to shave the various brackets etc that plagued the wheel wells on both sides of the engine bay. At this point I had no prior knowledge of how to do bodywork whatsoever. Looking back I probably would've tubbed it but at the time I just patched it with a smooth piece of sheet metal. I like how it turned out regardless.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image1.jpeg

Went ahead and relocated the fuse box to the frame rail underneath the drivers side headlight. Wires will be extended later, just needed it out of the way for now.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image2.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image3.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image4.jpeg

As you can probably tell from the fuse box pics, the rust was even worse on the drivers side. I didn't get any pics of it being cut out because it didn't cross my mind at the time, but I did manage to get some of the smoothing process.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image5.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image6.jpeg

Even after getting both wheel wells shaved and covered in primer I still had a big miss to deal with..
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/photo2.jpg

Went ahead and cleaned the oil pan up and painted it.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image8.jpeg
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image9.jpeg

So much better
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image10.jpeg

Decided to pull the sub frame to get everything nice and newish looking.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image7.jpeg

Also went ahead and cut out the battery tray (was spot welded in from the factory  ), will be relocating the battery to the trunk.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image12.jpeg

Haven't taken any up to date pics, but as of now the engine bay is almost ready for paint. My goal is to get the car put back together and painted before I leave for BMT in January. I still have to patch up the rust on the rocker panels, delete the antenna and rear wiper, and repair a few door dings and it will be ready for paint. It's getting a complete color change so there's a lot of prep work that needs done still.

Once I get out of BMT and go to Tech School, I plan on stocking up on parts. I just had to get the car looking good before I could justify spending too much on parts for it.

I'll try to update again asap.. stay tuned!

Haha, I like the longer wheelbase. 2+0's do look better though, no doubt.
As for the engine, I'm keeping the original VG30DE(NA) for now, simply due to the super low mileage it has on it. I do plan on eventually swapping it out, but that won't be until at least next year.

Thanks guys. Small update, but figured I'd at least post something today. Changed my mind on the valve covers, this isn't going to be a trailer queen or anything so I figured I would end up getting tired of the white valve covers real quick due to them getting dirty so easy. So, I made a solution:
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/image14.jpeg

I like it a lot better personally. Keeps an OEM look without keeping it OEM. Still haven't got around to powder coating them yet, just used high temp engine enamel again. Powder will come later for all my engine parts once every things put back together and I decide I like the color scheme.

Engine bay is getting painted as soon as I can get around to it. Once it's painted I can finally start getting stuff done.

Got the EFI harness out. This thing was a total pain to pull through the firewall. Debating on getting a mil spec connector to use as a quick disconnect on the firewall so I don't have to do this again. Anyway, gonna rewrap the harness and extend some wires so the harness can be hidden away easier.

Oh, and here's a little teaser of my intake plenum.

Haven't been on here in a while, but progress has been made on the build.

As for a mini-update, I purchased a set of Stillen headers and a gasket kit on black friday. Just waiting on them to get here. In the meantime I've been taking apart the mess of EFI harness that I posted above, and extending/rewrapping it as well as deleting unnecessary wires/connections. Never realized it would be so time consuming, but I should've known.

Anyway, I'll post up pics of the painted suspension/engine bay when I get the chance to paint it and upload them.

Well, some things came up and I still haven't been able to get around to painting the engine bay yet.

First off, my fiance ended up having car trouble, so my past week or so has been spent trying to help her find a new car. She ended up getting a Toyota Celica GT-S. Shes wanting me to help her mod it so this is going to be her new project.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/1465193_10202713208617371_1594435128_n.jpg

As for progress on paint, I'm just waiting on a few suspension parts to come in so I can reassemble my subframe and roll the car into the garage for paint. Should be done I'm hoping by next Monday.

Here is a picture of how it's sitting now (other than the hood being back on). Makes me cringe a little looking at it in this state.. but not much I can do at this point other than wait on parts.
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/Twesticles/Z32%20Project/482401_457036091071822_1147480400_n.jpg

In my last post I talked about ordering the Stillen headers and the gasket kit. They came in this week, but ended up having to go with Top Speed headers instead. Apparently the Stillen headers were on back order, so CZP contacted me to let me know, and told me that the Top Speed headers were actually identical. Apparently Top Speed manufactures the headers for Stillen. Wasn't a problem to me so I went ahead and told them to ship me the Top Speed ones instead.

I hate playing the waiting game, can't wait until I get the bay painted so I can finally start putting things back together and make it start looking like a car again. I'm really anxious to see how the paint turns out as well. It's getting a three stage paint, but I'll leave the color a surprise until I get pics of the outcome :D

I have a Z32 as well but I am doing an Ls swap. If you want I have a new used harness that only has 600 miles on it. It is for a TT and has already been wired to tuck it. I have some pictures I can post of my bay shave if you would like. Keep up the progress, it looks good!

If I wasn't staying NA I would definitely be interested. I'll probably be swapping in something other than a VG once I'm done with the NA though. But yeah feel free to post up pics of your bay! If you have any pics of the tucked harness (out of the car) feel free to post those too. Still planning how I want to run mine. So far all I've got done is removing the wires/connectors for the AIV/EGR/PRVR solenoids and grouping everything else together.. I'll be mocking everything up once the motor is back in the car, hopefully it's not too much of a pain to extend what I need.

UPDATE!!!! No more Black Z! Well.. no more black engine bay anyway.

Before I post pics of paint, here's a little progress on the suspension.
In case you missed the pic earlier in the thread, here is how the suspension used to look:

I have the rest of the suspension painted as well, just have yet to take pics yet. Anyway, on to what most of you are probably reading this for...the paint change!

I decided to go with a white base with a blue pearl. The blue pearl is hard to photograph but it looks really good in person. I'll try to get better pics this weekend with my DSLR, but for now all I have is cell phone pictures... anyway, here you go:

I'll keep you guys updated when I make any noteworthy changes. Hopefully I get all the new gaskets/seals installed sometime this weekend/next week. It'll get done as soon as I find the time to tear the motor down the rest of the way. Stay tuned!

good work, do you attend Ohio University?

Used to, just enlisted in the Air Force about 6 months ago. Going to finish up my degree while I'm in.

Quick little update, got the freshly painted suspension bolted up. I love the way the steering rack turned out! The color really goes well against the black cross member. Haven't taken any pics with the rest of the suspension bolted in yet, but everything has been taken down to bare metal and repainted so it all looks brand new again. I will be upgrading my suspension one step at a time later on, but I'm more than satisfied with this for now.

Excuse the dusty bay. I guess that's what happens when dealing with 23 year old suspension parts. :P

Everything is bolted in now suspension wise. I will be changing my fuel lines to SS braided hose and AN fittings, so the old nasty bracket in the pics will be gone before too long.

Just a quick update, will finally be tearing down the motor to replace all the seals/gaskets this weekend. Shouldn't take too long, I'll post an update once it's done. I'm leaving for basic training on the 14th, so I'm trying to get as much as I can done before then. Going to try and get everything in the engine bay put back together before I leave that way when I come back on leave after tech school all I have left to do will be a little body work and paint. The next couple weeks is gonna be kinda hectic but I should be able to get everything done in time. I'll keep you guys posted.

Yep.

2+2 overall length = 4525mm
2+0 overall length = 4305mm

So 2+2 is actually about 9" longer than the 2+0.

You should be fairly happy with electronics. If all else fails you can still get out and have some good experience to set you up with a good job. I am a F-16 weapons troop, basically load missiles and bombs on the jet and trouble shoot when it has weapons malfunctions. As for bases, it really depends on where you would like to go. There are a few guys on the forum that have been to Japan and say it is awesome. Im stationed at Shaw AFB in South Carolina, and I do not recommend it lol. Id like to be in FL or out west mainly for the car scene purposes. On a side note Im supprised they are bringing new guys in with all the foreshaping they just announced. Suppose to be letting go 25k personnel in the next 5 years.

Yeah I heard about that, that's crazy. From what I've seen there's a lot of people still in processing. At least at my recruiters office. I do know that they closed it to appointments only though, due to so many people trying to join.

Well apparently the previous owner had fried the piston rings, so looks like it's getting a rebuild. When I bought the car it was smoking a little, was hoping it was valve seals but it wasn't the case. I should've done a compression test when I bought it but oh well, nothing I can do now. So looks like I'll be getting new rings and bearings sometime in the future, will have to wait a couple months though. So for now I'm basically stuck at a stopping point other than reassembling the rest of the engine bay and getting the bodywork done and prepped for paint. I leave for basic soon so not sure how much I'll get done by then. I'll try to post up a final update before I leave, but can't promise anything.

Yay, another z32 owner.
Jump on the other Z site. there was a guy selling pistons and rings for cheap recently.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade your injectors. It will be worth it to go to the new style injectors. If you are rebuilding, buy a set of TT heads, have them ported and youll be happy with a peppy NA engine. You can throw a turbo on an NA. dont let the "nay-sayers" fool you. Im shooting for around 300+ on an NA setup. but its expensive.
oh. Im trying to get a guy to cut copper plenum gaskets for the Z. ill let you know, if you were to want one. Also. get the Z1 1-piece driveshaft, its not worth buying the bushing and bearing again and again for no reason.

I'm back! Finally out of Basic Training so I have communication with the outside world now. Haha. I'll be stockpiling parts over the next 3 months, so I'll keep everyone updated on what's going on. Currently the bodywork is getting done on the rest of the car back home, so it'll be completely ready next time I see it. All I'll have to do is drop in the motor. I'll try to have him take pics of the body work/paint progress while I'm gone so I can keep you all updated. Stay tuned!

Small update..
Ordered the rings/bearings for the rebuild along with all the other parts for the motor I still needed (maintenance wise).

No pics of the rest of the parts yet, as they haven't came in.

In other news, I found out my first duty station is going to be Misawa, Japan. So while I'm still going to be getting parts for the Z, I won't be able to drive it for a long ass time. I will however be picking up a new Nissan ASAP once I get across the pond :)

Stay tuned for more updates! They'll be more frequent once I get out of tech school. Not much I can update while I'm here.

Another small update finally. The rest of my parts came in a while ago but I've been too busy to post lately. Finally getting ready to go home for a few weeks so I'll be able to put in some work on my car again :)

Once I get to Japan I plan on either picking up a R32 or a STi. Obviously I'll go for the R32 if I find a good deal on one, just need something AWD while I'm there. So I'll be adding another car to this thread eventually, but I'll still be updating with parts I get for the Z as well as progress pics from back home.

So.. didn't end up getting a chance to work on the Z when I was home (go figure), was busy spending time with family and friends and other stuff.

Finally made it to japan, however! I've been doing the tourist thing for the past few weeks and getting settled in. Picked up a Subaru Forester s/tb for now, figured I'd need it for the crazy snow I hear we get up here, and I got it for cheap. Currently I'm still looking for a "real" car, lol.. found a R32 GTR that I might end up getting but we'll see. Also looking at maybe a 180sx or another z32. Keeping my options open for now, until I find the right car.

Now that I'm pretty much settled in, I can start ordering parts again (if I don't break the bank on a GT-R that is..), so I'll be updating as I order/have the parts installed back home. Sucks that I can't do the work as I don't really like other people working on my cars, but it's in good hands.

Until the next update, here are some pics:

nice work on the Z32, always had a soft spot for them.

Always wanted to get one but never found one for the right price, not to mention not enough time with my 3 other projects going on.

If you ever pick up a R32 hit me up and I can help ya source parts, since as you have learned now the upgarage up here sucks

its very common that they bondo the rust spots for a temp fix. eventually it will bubble and crack since they do a shitty job of prep work.

Got the GT-R! It seems to be in pretty good shape. It was bogging down randomly for a couple days after I bought it, but thankfully Sileighty_85 brought his scanner over and it turned out to just be a MAF issue. Took them out and sprayed them down with some MAF cleaner and it runs fine again. Anyway, on to the pics. Haven't gotten around to taking many pics yet, so these will have to do for now.

The day I bought it:

Enough. Lol. Put a new shift boot and e-brake boot on because the old ones were showing a lot of wear. The shift boot keeps coming out of the bracket so I'm still trying to find a way to get it to stay. They look a whole lot better though overall. Hopefully I'll be ordering some parts for her soon. We'll see what I can find.

Been a long time since the last update! Been debating on whether I should make a new build thread for the GT-R or not, but I've still yet to decide. Until I do, I'll continue to update this one I guess.

So when I first got the GT-R it was completely stock other than an HKS Turbo Timer and some off brand axle-back muffler.

It's not overpriced, it's just that there is hardly ever anything worth buying at the one up here. It's mostly subaru stuff. It's better off to order on their website or on the auctions. I've heard the ones down south are a lot nicer and have a wider variety of parts.

Why was drifting banned there? Havent heard anything here about it and I'm at Yokota.

I wasn't here yet when it got banned, but I heard it was due to kids in Subarus trying to drift on public roads and ended up killing themselves/getting into accidents. The ban was just recently lifted though, just have to get approved by your chain.

Not sure on the Reinhard, didn't bother measuring it. 90% sure its a 3" (76mm) though.

Was nice outside today so decided to go watch some drifting and take some pics.

So haven't posted in a longggg time.. figured it was time for an update.

Picked up a "Crayola" SR-3 for the Z, and began the search for a matching seat.

Have always been a fan of these wheels, so have been looking for a set since I got to Japan. Came across a single wheel for a good price, so figured I'd buy it and wait for three more to pop up.

Fast forward to a few months later... didn't end up finding matching wheels, but did find a set in 19". Again, found these for a good price so had to pull the trigger. At first I was iffy about throwing 19's on the Z, but figured what the hell. Will be refinishing these eventually.

Somewhere in between I did another oil change with some super mad tyte JDM oil.

FINALLY picked up some tires for the GT-R and got the wheels mounted.

Picked up some Fortune Auto coilovers for the GT-R, had heard nothing but good things about these so decided to give them a chance. That and the fact that they're located in the states made them extremely tempting for future rebuild purposes.

Installed everything and took it for a wash.. shitty cell phone pics ahead. The wheels will be replaced with another set TBD eventually, but these will work for now. Needs to be lowered some more but I'll get to it one of these days.

Took a visit to one of my favorite local spots for some pics.

Fast forward to last month, went to a cars and coffee meet for the first time since I've been here. Wasn't as bad as I expected, I just tend to try and stay away from most of the "car scene" on base so never bothered going. Took some pics while I was there, if you want to see more you can visit the website on the photos.

Here's a buddy's r32 (was in a few of the pics earlier in this thread). It's been through quite a few changes since then:

Loved seeing this FC.. super clean car.

Ordered a stainless clutch line for the Z and a new shift knob. A few weeks later the clutch line gave out on the GT-R so picked up a stainless line for it as well.. guess it's one less thing to worry about breaking now.

Still can't find a matching SR-3, but picked up some SR-4's for the GT-R today for a steal. Will get better pictures when I install them. I need to do something about my storage situation, don't have much in here but the wheels/tires/seats are filling it up pretty quick. Ignore the black shelf, getting rid of that thing.

I'm sure I've missed some stuff that went on in between, it's been a long time but probably nothing important. Will try to update more frequently, however I'll be taking a short trip to Tokyo soon so progress on the car will halt for a few weeks. I need to start getting parts for the engine but trying to focus on stocking up on exterior mods while I can. RB performance parts are easier to come by in the states than body parts so need to take advantage of my time here. With that being said, I'm almost done appearance wise, other than some different wheels eventually and some small things here and there. Will be doing a rebuild when I get back to the states, so going to start stocking up for that in the near future as well.

As for the Z, I'm still slowly ordering parts to get it close to finished hopefully by the time I get back. Have a few new things in mind and will update more on that when the time comes.
