View Full Version : A/C fan doubles as cooling fan?

Last week I decided to put the water pump on my car ('92 240 stock) that I had bought about 2 months earlier. When I pulled the upper fan shroud I found that the bracket that holds my A/C fan/motor was destroyed. The AC fan and motor assembly still attached to the broken bracket was sitting on the lower fan shroud and had been being beat up between the radiator and the radiator fan. So I just removed it all. Swapped in my new water pump as well as a new thermostat. Did some other little things and just got it put back together. Thought I would just run without the A/C fan until I could find another bracket (meanwhile not using the A/C of course).

Took it for a test drive, after just a few minutes the temperature gauge was through the roof! I quickly put it back in the garage. I opened the radiator and let it spill over and cool down, then I started it up again and while it was running I picked up the A/C fan and plugged it in, and it started going. So I guess it doubles as an electric cooling fan?

If this is the case then would just having it out be enough to have had the temp go up so quick?

you probably had a bubble in the radiator hose, that'll cause the coolant temp to jump up really fast. the AC fan only runs when the AC is on or the coolant is about 212 degrees. if you still had the clutch fan on you shouldn't have any problems, assuming you get the coolant bled.

Then you should double check your install. I thru my a/c fan out long time ago cuz it was busted anyways, and the stock clutch fan with the shroud are more then capable of cooling the engine. I eventually swapped to a aftermarket electric fan and took out teh clutch fan so I dont have problems.

Maybe you got a stuck thermostat?.

Maybe you got a stuck thermostat?.

Nopers, last guy was right, had an air lock going on, called my dad and he confirmed so I put the front of my car up on ramps to get all the air in the system bled out to the highest point (now being the radiator). Started it up and no problems. Scary for a little while, now I know about air lock.

atleast you found out the nice way, i was doing 150kph on the highway and boom boom. My brandnew rebuilt sohc that i spent close to $700 on the head alone went pop. Moral, don't be dumb, check your shit before you go for a drive.
