View Full Version : Trading my daily for 92 s13?

Hey everyone, I think I have ran into some sort of a dilemma.
I have always wanted an s-chassis car, and I recently got the opportunity to trade my 2002 honda accord v6 coupe (automatic) for a 1992 s13 240sx hatch.
The hatch has 153k on the clock, my accord has 118k. Both stock, running fine...
What I really want to know, is this worth it? Should he be adding money? I don't want to see myself over paying for a 20 year old car just because I am a fan of the chassis.

Why dont you just keep your daily, and save up for an S chassis because why lie a 92 will def come with some problems.
that is just my .02
always have a plan b incase your toy car decides to shit on you

Makes sense, would the 92 have problems that are pretty impossible to handle?
I don't have the room for a second car right now unfortunately

Hmmm I cant say, I havent seen the car. but I would assume that yes it will. since it is a 92.
Just have a mechanic look at it bro, ask for his proffesional opinion.
But yeah if you do the trade, he will need some cash on his end in my opinion.

This.
I would say if both cars are in the same condition, the 240 is worth a little over half the value of the accord.

Without seeing both cars, I think he should definitely add a little cash on his end.

Rust and body work, in my opinion, are stopping points for me. Replacing parts and repairing parts can be done and found much cheaper.

Pictures would help out a lot! Are we talking about a straight trade? 2002 Honda Accord for 1992 240sx?! Straight trade,....no.

Trading a probably reliable decent driving car for a probably shitty 21 year old nissan? I'd tell him 1-2k on top.

i spent 1k on my 90 s13 with 200k on it to be my daily to save my daily 02 civic si with a 100% jdm/edm type r conversion.
keep in mind i did it when i didnt have a job and spent an extra 700 on excellent condition used parts and a ES master bushing kit and subframe bushings and replaced/rebuilt the trans, diff and suspension, and another 150ish on tires and 650ish on function form type 2 coils and 400 on paint supplies and repainted the car myself. so thats what, 2300, plus lets say another 200 in tiny cheap shit i dont remember, 2500. so for that it worked perfect for at least a year until i decided to make it my project.
dont trade your accord, that shit will last a long time. buy the cheapest s13 with the least amount of rust you can buy. you cant replace every part on the car including the engine for the difference in value between that and your accord. trust me...
For the record my s13 has since been put in the process of going full track car. when its back on the road the only original part on the car will be the metal on the chassis and the front subframe. everything else has been replaced and upgraded, so be careful that buying an s13 as your toy can easily escalate.

yeah the paint job was the first thing that threw me off, he said he hasn't touched anything since he bought it. i doubt a 60 year old grandma would have done something like that lol. i'm glad i didn't trade in, i know i can get a decent amount of cash for the accord too

First off, if you want to know if he should put cash on top all it takes is a little tiny bit of research. IMO KBB is USELESS, doesn't mean a god damned thing especially for 240's. Look on Craigslist and see what 240's and Accords are selling for in your area. That should give you a pretty good idea what they're worth.
Second, why in the fucking hell would you even CONSIDER trading your clean Accord for that shitbox 240? If it was a super clean, STOCK, grandma owned, straight out of a time capsule type 240 then I would get it. That thing is a straight POS. It's probably been in a couple accidents with a bent core at the least. It's rattle canned and missing body parts (chuki extensions). It's probably been worked on by the stupidest POS mechanic in your area and the owner is probably the cheapest asshole around.
Lastly, why do all you jackasses think 240's are un-reliable? You retards are the ones that MAKE them un-reliable. If you did proper maintenance with quality parts they wouldn't shit out on you. If you guys could fucking wire an SR without making a complete fucking mess of the wiring, you probably wouldn't have issues. If you spent your money on MAINTAINING the fucking car rather than bolting the shittiest china parts that your piggy banks can muster, the cars would be completely reliable. The basic issue is that these are OLD CARS. You've gotta go through the maintenance from end to end on the car, ANY OLD CAR (even a cock-sucking Honduh). Once you get caught up on the maintenance the cars are EXTREMELY reliable. How do you think the cars got to need so much maintenance in the first place? The fucking thing just ran and ran and the owner never had to fix it...

Looks like you dodged a bullet there sperez!
If I was in your situation, I would enjoy the Accord while saving for a 240 that doesn't need as much attention. Save up enough for a car and maintenance items that are usually neglected like bushings, engine mounts and possibly rust repair.
A benefit for you is that your Accord isn't a bad car do have to drive in the meantime!

If you want to trade for an S13 you need to find something mint and unmolested. My two-tone is a fine example.

to the posters, 240s are awesome dailys I bought my s14 bone stock and drive it through chicago winters no problem.
To OP: Don't trade unless he's adding healthy amounts of cash. Or just slam your accord on some big wheels and be vip gangsta.
To myself?: Nice to see a thread asking for advice on zilvia and not see it flamed to the point of locking.

240's arent reliable only because of their cheap half-assing owners. If u take care of your 240 and maintain it it shouldnt give u any problems, even if it's modded. On the other hand, i think your car's worth more, and like someone said before, you should get some cash on your end.

I'm wanting to pick up a 240sx daily as well, but my dad keeps telling me not to get a 20 year old "datsun pos". Apparently when he was growing up Datsuns were known as unreliable crappy cars I guess lol. Anyways, he keeps telling me to get a newer car ~2006+
Not that I really have the money for either right now, but really, it's either pay a monthly car payment, or buy a cheap 240sx and pay for the extra maintenance that comes with older cars. I've always wanted an S13/S14 since I was like 9 though. What do you guys think? Is dailying a 240sx worth it, or is it better just to get a nice dd if you could only afford one and not both?

haha amen! it would be my daily, so zip ties would definitely not be part of the equation. this one guy at my school has a white s13 with zipties everywhere and i just want to take his car and give it the tlc it deserves. i can't stand this "drift slut" scene on a fucking daily.. like what...

honestly i think it's worth it if you're up to maintaining it. car payments are a bitch, and you're quick to find yourself in a hole if you are young and can't pay them.

Slow builds are disheartening. A driveable car wouldn't cost much more, it'll give you an easier starting point for a first project, and you will save your knuckles from plenty of scars!
But either way, good luck saving, hunting and finding room for it!

I never understood why people complain that 240s are unreliable. Aside from age wear on parts, mine has been pretty solid and its at 200k miles. Maybe instead of buying crappy parts and doing short cut methods when modifying, your cars will be reliable. If you really want a 240, find a really good condition one, it may take a while, but when you find that deal it will be worth it. I'm glad my car was in my family for 10 years to ensure that no dumbasses messed it up, but then again the prior owner did fuck up some of the wiring...

s14 would be sweet. the only problem is around the tri-state area (and i'm sure everywhere else) people think their 240sx is worth so much fucking money! this guy (a different s13) said he would trade if i ADDED a grand with my accord. his s13 was not even running, but he was riding off the fact he had some shitty turbo kit and a horribly aligned widebody on the car. it's so sad really.

No actually I would say your Dad is downright ignorant. Datsun's were actually great cars. Both the 240Z and 510 were Datsun's and Nissan sold so many of them. Hell Datsun 510's were on rental car fleets. My second car in High School was a Datsun 510 and it was great.
Your Dad sounds like one of those Buy MURICAN cars biased people. Seriously he does not know what he is talking about. Sorry but its true I would not trust your Dad for car advice. Oh and 240sx's were Nissan's they never had the Datsun brand name on them. LOL Again proving the ignorance of your father. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and not trying to put him down its just a fact.

If I had a kit that costed as much as the car you drive, i'd probably try to keep it from breaking too.

He's telling you to get a newer car because he knows when the 240 breaks you won't fix it or pay for it. So that's his money. Smart man.

keep your daily and save up for what you want. pick up a 240 in the $1500 range that will probably need some work or a swap. I picked up my s13 hatch for 2200, completely stock pretty good condition, ran kinda ok, everything was in one piece and one color lol. Then put about $1500 in for maintenance and stuff it needed like tires or whatever. Now it runs perfectly fine no problems all for around $3700 ish. Here's a pic

This is just my opinion from experience but if you want a manual car to begin with I would wait and find one instead of getting the auto. You will spend more converting it over to manual and if you do get the auto and dont convert it right away you might not be as happy with it. That's just my opinion but its up to you. Cash on his end would be a good idea if you go through with this.

And this.
I bought my 90 240 back in February for $1600, shit faded paint job, soft clutch pedal, clutch going bad, dying alternator, and a sketchy fuel injector wire that altered the idle if moved around in certain ways (kinda like how your shitty headphones only worked if you moved the wire around to a certain position).
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w19/tacobellman_2007/1990%20240SX/Original_zps7642c1c8.jpg
As time passed, I spent around $700+ and hours of labor fixing my car up just to get it in good running condition. Bought some brake fluid to bleed the clutch, replaced the clutch master cylinder, changed oil and filter, flushed out the coolant and replaced it, replaced the clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate, and replaced the alternator with one designed to go into a 1997 Nissan Quest. And also wiggled the fuel injector wire around to get my engine to idle where it's supposed to idle at. Lol.

So after all that work, my 240 has been in great running condition with no problems for about 2-3 months now.
240s are work, but definitely doable AND can be made to run fine if you're willing to put the time and money in.
I agree with the other tips and ideas on here, though. Wait it out and keep your reliable Honda. Save your money and wait for another 240. That 240 looks a bit sketchy. You SHOULD be getting cash on your end as well if you planned to trade.
Good luck with your 240 findings!

This.

Lol.

s14 would be sweet. the only problem is around the tri-state area (and i'm sure everywhere else) people think their 240sx is worth so much fucking money! this guy (a different s13) said he would trade if i ADDED a grand with my accord. his s13 was not even running, but he was riding off the fact he had some shitty turbo kit and a horribly aligned widebody on the car. it's so sad really.
its not just 240's, i have noticed any used cars in from the 90's are asking for a lot of money, there is just no cool brand new cars these days, and honestly i rather buy a older car then these ridiculous wind tunnel, fuel economy, and space practical cars
if you want a 240, just be patient and keep looking. i was looking for one for 2 years, and finally found a decent one for not super expensive just this summer
