So! time for my own build thread. I'm Greek, and obviously in Greece. The tax system here changes every week, 3 years ago 2 liter cars were tax free, then they changed it to being so expensive, everyone is selling their evos and s2k's for half the price than they had 2 years ago. Which makes a 1800cc car, splendid. :o

I've been into cars 12 years now, converted and modified 2 starlet turbos, very fast and reliable cars, learned to tune ecu's on them, build carbon and fiberglass, and generally everything about cars.

this was my glanza and my GT. (1300cc's 287hp and 190hp)

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/carbon/glanza2.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/rustmotor_v3_01.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/ep82/keramisss_zpsfc492d58.jpg

anyway on to the s13. after i sold my first starlet (the black one) i put the 2nd one on sale. in the meantime i found this:

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0359_zps537be16f.jpg

200sx... normally these are ca18det, but the guy had an s14 blacktop sr which was just rebuilt, forged with cp pistons, eagle rods etc and claimed zero km's. the car hadn't moved in 2 years, and he said, some parts missing. a turbo being one of them.

one problem. it was 550kms away. So, i take my mate along who is an awesome electrician and all around master mechanic, a gt2860rs from his sierra cosworth which was in pieces for paint anyway, and we fly over!

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0319_zpsbc6bfe1c.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0326_zps8a266732.jpg

so we get there on saturday morning with tools and a turbo to make things work...best case scenario we drive it back. but nobody wants to drive 550kms in an unknown car, so i decided to load it on a train. but we gotta make sure it works first. I had sent over some local friends to check out the car and they said it looked ok. well, it did, the parts that were there. a lot of shit was missing. anyway we had come prepared and installed the turbo, and made a complete intercooler piping set out of scrap!

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0327_zps0778d68d.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0328_zpsf8ea6f0f.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0333_zps8737853e.jpg

after adjusting the CAS, the car finally started, but was running stupid rich and misfiring. we'll sort that out in athens, we said. the car had a z32 maf and mine's ecu. i dont know if those two play along, but we'll never know. we loaded the car into a truck, and took it to the railway station.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0335_zps8c0b2d33.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0343_zps79241541.jpg
loading it on the ramp was a PITA
i'm on the night train ,ready to go

and about 7 hours later, athens!
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0347_zpsc4b9c315.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0348_zpsae3a855b.jpg

and after spitting and banging for about 2km, waking up everyone in the way, arrived at my mate's shop.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/odyssey/IMAG0351_zps17587eeb.jpg

So, the car wouldnt work properly. I had to make it work fast, cause a guy offered to buy my starlet GT , at the end of the month. i had 3 weeks to make the sx work or i would be without a car.

start of build:
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0353_zps1e12a7c7.jpg

i was sure the maf was not cooperating with the ecu. but going back to a standard maf sucks , so i ordered a power fc. While waiting for it to arrive, we tackled more easy problems. I removed the tiny intercooler it had and put it up for sale

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0379_zpse646313f.jpg

and bought some parts. some good, some knockoff.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0354_zps47b32388.jpg

installed the intercooler and made a whole new plumping system

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0376_zps22e00a40.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0378_zps68742a2b.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0377_zps6b6fc9b3.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0380_zpsb033e645.jpg

the power fc came, and it wouldnt even get power. we double checked that we had the right ecu, so we decided to open up the wiring loom.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0383_zps3fd550f3.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0384_zpsa9ffab6f.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0385_zps4283587d.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0387_zpsa5aec3e8.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0389_zps30bb04cf.jpg

it was a MESS. cables not going anywhere. cables short circuiting. things not connected. maf wrong cas wrong everything wrong. this thing was built by chimpanzees in a dark cave using only hammers.

anyway we rebuilt the loom, and the thing fired up correctly for the first time. then, something wierd. The power fc would not store changes. After a bit of internet searching i found out that the eccs relay gives time to the ecu after the ignition has turned off, to store the data. this relay was missing or we couldnt find it, so my friend made a hack with a somethingy i dont remember, and gave 1 second delay to the relay, so the ecu has time to burn data. sweet.

3 weeks of work, cleaning up and redoing things the monkeys had destroyed, the car is ready to hit the road. No blow off valve, so the car keeps dying when letting off the throttle ,but it will be done too.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0422_zps6bf7ab2f.jpg

so, easter came and i had to take a trip, so i thought i'd check my transmission and diff oil.

thats how much there was in the gearbox:
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0423_zps32fcd6bc.jpg

after going for a trip, and looking at constant 89-90C water temp, i decided time for a coolant system upgrade.

driftworks radiator (couldnt find koyo in europe)
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0439_zps4bcd4752.jpg
and samco hoses
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/977750_10201116764509185_568858773_o_zpsa0c73dbe.j pg

time to give my mate back his 2860rs, bought an 2871r 0.64 ....nice power, but i loved the response of the 2860, you could easily drift in 2nd in the streets just by caressing the throttle. but power wise, 0.6 bar in the 2871 is like 1 bar in the 2860....

converted my old sard R2D2 blow off valve to recirculating...
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/bov_zpsdc3b4913.jpg

got some goodies:
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0494_zps51b96175.jpg

my mate george turned my brace into nismo kinda
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0495_zpsad3ea81c.jpg

Also changed the gearbox, cause mine was grinding gears too much, added a nismo cluch cylinder, a nismo fork pivot, and a cluch braided hose. My steering rack was leaking on all 3 ends so i sent it off to be serviced, and installed new bushings while at it.

and got some brembos, off a renault megane f1, they are a bit bigger than the evo's
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0497_zps4baf3229.jpg

also i removed the ABS, and installed a willwood brake valve

got a type x wing which i prepped and painted in my balcony...
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/DSCF1769_zps282f80c1.jpg

then, time for some nice sounds. I already had an amp and sub, but my speakers were fried. so i decided to go for some focals. i found a set cheap, and the guy wanted 60 euros to install them... right, sure.

so off i go:
remove the old ones, to take measurements.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0531_zpsaae2e199.jpg

1cm thick MDF,

my trusty dremel
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0533_zps28ca767d.jpg

and ready.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0541_zps64b6bc52.jpg

i grinded a bit off the back of the door panel...

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0542_zps4f2cedb7.jpg

and gave the mdf a coat of primer so they wont suck moisture

threw the wing on, and went for summer vacations!

Very cool build! Nice toyotas too!

thanks. the build has a long way to go yet... the toyotas had a real lot of personal work...the on the black glanza i had made the mold of almost all the bodykit and remade it in carbon...bonnet, rear wing, sideskirts, front and rear lip, eyelids, air diverter, the air filter to turbo pipe...

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/team%20calendar/PC060261copy.jpg

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/carbon_intake.jpg

the GT, i copied the genuine TOM's bodykit, and made the rear wing in carbon, and the front bumper in carbon and kevlar (which my boss proceeded to smash with a nissan terrano) , plus the bonnet. also i learned to tune ecu's on them...

S13 update: i'm building a bonnet. Istalling a hood vent (dmax style) and making a mold of it. target : 5-6kg total weight.

also i sourced a dashboard, so i'll be making some gauge pods.

there are a few people that have imported some, just for the rarity of it...i've seen a girl with a black GT , in california i think.

update:
general fix ups...connected the reverse switch on the gearbox, connected the check engine light.

my hot-cold air switch wire is kinked :(...where could i find a used or new one?

coming soon: how to make gauge pods and a fiberglass vented hood.

update on the build:

finally got new front tires: Falken...something. didnt bother to remember.

full bushing set from energy suspension, to be fitted, hardrace droplinks, some heat resistant hose covers, and aerocatch fasteners for the hood i'm bulding:

here we go:

i traced the vent on my hood, and started cutting

i used a polyurethane glue called black mamba (ironically, i later found out it comes in white too...white mamba? ) which has spectacular strength

splot
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0712_zpsb73b78d5.jpg

i didnt get many photos after that cause my hands were a mess!
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0713_zpsa35d85ac.jpg

from underneath...
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0714_zps690f718f.jpg

in the end we drilled and screwed a number of screws around the vent, to keep it properly seated until the glue does it's work. then the screws will be cut and sanded , and the whole thing will be puttied over. after the hood has been properly prepared, it will be molded in fiberglass, and the original sold cheaply...

to be continued... coilovers, bushes, fiberglassing, dash out, repairs, horror, agony! :hyper:

My two drachmas -- poly just binds up in most spots in an s13. Either stay rubber or go spherical.

The RLCA (and fixed things like diff or subframe) are about the only passable places for poly.

aga
10-09-2013, 03:41 PM
hmm what do you mean binds up? starts squeaking? or has fitment issues? spherical is too much for a daily car i think... rubber, what , oem? yikes.

e1_griego
10-09-2013, 03:43 PM
The bushings in the back of a 240 need to move in more than one axis. Poly doesn't.

When it binds it doesn't let the susp move around, eventually just tears the bushing up.

aga
10-09-2013, 03:55 PM
that's...shit. thanks for giving me the heads up. i'll install them for now, cause mine are fucked, and i'll look for alternatives in the future.

aga
10-13-2013, 01:53 AM
so, taking out the subframe i suspect that the trasmission cooler has never worked

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0720_zpsf16ed37c.jpg

the subframe bushes were knackered as i suspected

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0721_zpsa10b0e80.jpg

and i found out the hard way that the energy suspension set, does NOT include them! it onlygives you some inserts. well, too late for that. the car will be on the lift for a week it seems until new ones come over from driftworks

Better yet, go with s14 rear subframe for better geometry.

finally completed my hood!
welded stainless nuts on some thingies i cut with the laser at work,

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0781_zps839dfe90.jpg

and buried them in the hood reinforcement using fiberglass and polyester

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0783_zpsea14e9f7.jpg
then the hood was glued on using polyurethane glue

the next day i installed the aerocatch in the place of the two front bump stops, and cut the two front grilles, until i decide what to do about rainwater (don't want the coils getting wet) ...also i forgot to install windshield squirters. :(

i tried to pull off the hose off the overflow nipple on the radiator neck and it came off real easily. that led me to a ton of trouble. the metal was too thin to make a new threading, welding it on didnt go well cause the welding thing cant fit to weld between the nipple and the radiator, addind epoxy didnt do anything so i had a leak.

http://i.imgur.com/cnnCTKh.gif%3F1

so i bought a whole new radiator neck from carbuildersolutions in uk (awesome site) and cut mine off , welded new one

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/silvia/IMAG0804_zps5e5c0f79.jpg

its preety beefy, cnc machined and the cap is lower pressure than the driftworks one (1bar instead of 1.3)

since i emptied the system of coolant i replaced all the radiator hoses and turbo coolant return with samco

if my friend who does all the welding is free tomorrow , we'll fabricate a stand for a coolant expansion tank, and hopefully my cooling system will be complete, i was chasing leaks all all over but it seems to be great now.

greek man does it right..

thanks man. yesterday i hit a hole when backing up in a gas station, and i fell underneath the car, saw fluids running, thought i broke my oil pan. today i called the AA, and found out that thankfully, it was coolant. we put the car on the lift, and found two more hoses underneath the intake manifold that we hadnt replaced. one of them had a hole. so we replaced those two, and also installed two nipples, one in the lower rad hose and one on the neck near the vent bolt, to install a coolant tank, but found out that the radiator cap i use is improper for this system. mine has a steel clamp on the top, and this won't hold pressure in this kind of system. i gotta get one with a rubber on top.

and now, the weather:
i attended AEM's water meth seminar so now i'm a certified know-it-all

we were tuning using the new infinity ecu on this thingy:

it almost blew the dyno... the car is rated at 1000+ hp, and the dyno around 800.

a few nights ago i hit a pothole going reverse in a gas station, and i immediately thought "oh shit ,the oil pan"...so i fell down to see under the car, and i see fluids running. i drove two blocks to my home, and next day called the AA to take the car to the shop. as i pushed it towards the truck i saw that it was coolant, not oil. so after i put the car on the lift i started looking to see where the leak was coming from. finally we removed the starter motor, and there were two coolant hoses that we didnt know about. one had a hole. as we fixed those, we decided to install a coolant swirl pot that i had but the radiator cap i have is no good for this kind of system (its a spring steel cap), so we installed the nipples and whatever was needed but left them capped, until a valveless cap arrives from my supplier.

So far so good, my brother had one of those Toyota turbo starlet back home in Jamaica sucks we couldn't get it over here in the USA

starlets are awesome pocket rockets. The jamaicans were the first to get a starlet in the 10's. but if i was in the usa i wouldnt care, when you have the choice of so much awesome metal. if i was there i'd probably be a meathead muscle car guy lol (but with turbos and injection, not carb shit)

finally stopped chasing leaks all around, the coolant system is ok, but i think im gonna change it all! driving up a mountain at a casual pace, the water temp rises up to the point where the fans come on. its still winter, i dont like that sh!t

so im thinking:

-remove the e-fans
-install stock shroud with gk-tech's fan blades upgrade
-install the coolant pot i have sitting on my desk in months
-put the turbo return on the coolant neck as it's supposed to be

now, on to drivetrain issues:
i am chasing a vibration that occurs in 5th gear in 1700 to 2100 rpm when accelerating

things that could be at fault:
-propshaft: took it out, had it balanced with new center bearing, cruising much improved but that vibration is still there
-half shafts: a very good mechanic told me that the inner hubs wear out and that could be my problem. is that a possibility?
-unbalanced wheel: took them off got them balanced, again, cruising improved but that wasnt the culprit
-clutch assembly: lets hope we dont get to that.

so what do you guys think?

forget the vibration, i got more serious things to occupy me.

Since i got the car it has been plagued with knocking issues. everything points to the head or the timing. i got a whole head from an engine that spun a bearing, had never been opened. got a cosworth gasket, some supertech stem seals and various other stuff to switch over heads. taking out the cam cover , we saw that the cams were wrong, specifically the intake one, was 1 tooth off , going by the colored chain links. after some research, we decided that going by the chain links is not to be trusted so we adjusted the cams going by another schematic (i think by tomei?) that counts the teeth.

anyway a lot of things happened since and i think the CAS got damaged or was damaged... the ignition advance won't follow the ecu's advance.anyway i'm switching it over this afternoon, hope for the best.

in the meantime i made a new coolant return pipe for the turbo, returns to the water neck as it should, no boiling sounds from the heater anymore when turning the car off.

installed a coolant swirl pot too, the thingy does the job! topped it up with red toyota coolant, now i can call the coolant system kinda complete.

car's FIXED!

the intake cam was off by 1 tooth, and the CAS was faulty
as a result:
1. much smoother operation
2. no more knocking
3. TORQUE
4. the whole boosted area of the map is now SUPER lean.gotta re-tune it and i think i'm gonna run our of injectors (i have S15 480cc ones)

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/740cc-nismo-injectors_zps17382fab.jpg~original

got these cuties and reset the ecu, tuned it from the start, the car runs FLAWLESSLY.

I estimate the car to be above 350hp (2871R at 1bar) . i am still forced to run low ignition advance (6-8 degrees at 1bar), that makes me think the car has a lot of compression. The previous guy must have skimmed the head too much. I did a compression test and it hit 180psi.

anyway i won't be swapping heads or nothing for now, though i have everything in my parts cabinet (a whole unmolested head, a cosworth gasket etc)...maybe getting a set of cams will make the job refreshing the whole head worth it.

Also, good luck with your spine with stiff springs in athens ;)

S15 injectors...they were close to maxing out

Well, we'll see if they are too stiff...if they are, I'll switch springs

Good project Mr Athens ! Tell me, does the hooter/horn still work on your car ? When I was there last , I could not believe the hooting going on in the streets. The light goes green and all you hear is hooting all the way from the back to the second car up front !!

yep it's the stressful life we live here. i admit i do it myself... the most annoying guys are the taxis, considering they drive more slowly than anybody, but honk at you as if they are in a hurry.

i tuned it the day i put them on, they run like stock...excellent injectors. it's no surprise , they've made them to even have the same injector lag as the stock ones, for easy tuning...

Subscribed! Awesome build brother. I have an s13 hatch like you here in NY I'm working on(super slow build though) as I have three simultaneous projects going(s2000 and '89 e30 325is coupe). I lived in Greece(Glyfada)for 5 years, '90 to '95, best years of my life, have a house in Ano Voula now. Was always at limanakia and Vouta watching all the street racing back in the day as I was pretty young back then. Great times. Thinking I should send my hatch to Greece when "it's done" and shoot the breeze with you, hit up the Nurburgring or something(a dream of mine). This is a dating site isn't it? Haha joking with ya, my wife would kill me if I had a boyfriend :p again, nice build.

my mechanic tried to fit them which resulted in the driver's side being high and off center ( i don't blame him, it just can't be done) ...so i got a driver's side bride rail after some forum searching for the proper part number

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/IMG_20160203_114150_zps1fwre8je.jpg
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa126/aga_glanza/IMG_20160203_113959_zpsjf01elvr.jpg

so here's the lowdown: to fit the recaro on these rails you have to widen some of the holes on the adaptor plates. the hinge for the rail lever had to be cut off the seat cause it was hitting the adaptor plates.
