View Full Version : Nissan doesn't like Cupholders

When you look at the Z32,350z,180sx,Silvia's, and Skylines only the S15 came with oem cupholders which were located imo in the perfect place. 350z had a cool location for a cup holder if your sitting in the passenger seat but it's not ideal for the driver. Seems odd to me considering all these cars were manufactured from 89 to the early 2000s yet only one car had cup holders.... Dear Nissan what's up with that?

Sports cars don't need cupholders.
I would guess it was nissan apologists on the design teams, trying to build sports cars as nissan tried to castrate them every step of the way. So, they said fuck cupholders.
Of course, it didn't work, because with the rest of the cars castrated, not having cupholders doesn't make our cars more serious, just more frustrating.

this is something that only americans would complain about
at least its not like the vw cup holders that look like they are a great place to stow your piping hot coffee until you accelerate and it launches it directly into you lap like a friggin sling shot.

No food or drinks allowed in my ride. Use a bottle. Then you need no holder. Pretty simple really. Open containers are just waiting to be spilled. Cup holders are for luxury. Buy a caddy. They usually just get filled with pennies anyways lol.

you forgot about the z32!
i really wish i had a place to puy my coffee (or large slurpee on these hot days.)
ive seen this insert on yaj
http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz192/JDMFairladyZ32/realspeedcupholder2.jpg
which would be too small for many american sized drinks/cups/etc but could also easily be made (and made bigger) instead of importing.
ive also seen a 2 cup holder that inserts where the Z's ashtray is...
both of these are horrible locations imo because they get in way of shifting.
when i remember ill look for a universal one that i can install somewhere near the center console. one that is sturdy yet not very obtrusive or requiring me to drill into the dash/etc.
as for 'only americans complaining about...' that might be true. but part of the reason is... japan is small as fuck compared to the states (or A state.) they dont have many places to drive, as well. you know how americans love their road trips. (plus japans efficient public/mass transit systems, etc)
plus owning a car, driving, fuel, etc is so much more costly over there.

Well if you drive from LA to SD for work everyday and it's in the high 80s/low 90s it be pretty hard to make that round trip everyday without some water in the car.

I've considered making one of those, but have not gotten around to it. At least it's big enough for a 12oz can, I sometimes put them there. (if that was half the price, I'd be ordering it at this moment)

Yes, it looks like I have four seats, but you literally cannot sit in the back seat, and no I will not let you try. Don't fuck with my seatbelt, just sit there, it will work. No music, because I have to listen to my car. Learn to appreciate that the rear end rumbles, reverberates, and thumps. Also, it's bumpy as fuck, becausepretendracecar.

i usually keep atleast one 20oz bottle of something in my car in case i am eating a snack and just so happen to choke lol.
I do not mind not having cupholders.. it keeps the interior cleaner (no sticky syrup from soda mess anywhere).
also my ka24de has a ton of power so how would i drive without having a can of coke go flying through my back window under acceleration?? see...i have a valid point!
JK, my ka24 is slow and barely has enough power to even move the s14 body at any high rate of speed so....

I've never understood those.
I mean, who WOULDN'T want something sticky/staining, with the ring that holds it at a retarded angle, hovering over your stereo, and shifter/boot, and in the way of your shifting, and where the stick keeps you from going for your drink easily?
It's even worse than the modified console box lids, or console inserts.
The fact of the matter is the s13 has enough space for a 12oz can, either with or without a fancy cupholding insert, in the ashtray. Anything else is clumsy and prone to spillage, or in the way of shifting, and prone to spillage.

I say even with cupholders- bottles with secure screw on tops only. No pop-off tops and definitely no open cups.
If I have to stop short or make a hard turn, whatever is in that open cup that is in the cup holder is going to escape in a disorderly fashion. Maybe Nissan was like "hmm... I'm going to guess that everyone who buys these cars are going to spill their drinks in them, so we'll just make it a little easier for them to do so... no cupholders!"

Not a true din mount. Ford uses rails and front clips for that era. Don't know how you would shift with that.

Put it on top of your radio and problem solved on the blocking radio and shifting side, and don't keep open cups in it. I have one but its mainly a random screw and paper holder now.

You still end up having to get fancy and trimming shit and figuring out how to mount them with those. If you look at the side they don't have the normal screw holes a nissan uses and yes they do use rails.
Just look at the side.

Who the hell carries open OPEN cans of soda in their car anyways?? I've had that cup holder that goes above the radio/trim console insert/whatever trim option you have and can shift just fine with my long-ass PBM Shift knob, in addition to the stiff suspension setup I have. I've used the cup holders for both bottles and cups with lids, and I have yet to spill something. If you have a liquids+radio problem you either need to finish your can of liquid before you drive, or quit driving like you're actually on a track. Those cup holders are pretty functional and simple for me. Also, the fact that I've never used the left cup holder shows just how fat America is.

Yeah it does fix it because as I said if it is a sealed container wtf does it matter, learn to read. And I agree with Taco if you have spilling issues regardless of cupholder or not you really should not be drinking in the car.

you could put it on the bottom. I had one of the Taurus cup holders in my old P10 and it was below the radio.
The other thing is the stuff is pretty secure in it. Unless its a tall heavy can which they don't actually recommend putting in them in the first place.

The condensation drips down into the cup holder which at least in the nissan ones is a sealed dish so if its above the radio its not going to cause any issues, if its in front it might if the container leans against the radio. If it is the taurus type ones it should be fine as well because it sits far enough out to miss the radio.
