Do i have the right gear oil

Llike the title says , I purchased this awhile ago from kragen & they said it was specifically for my car but i was doing alil research saying not to use gl5 i guess? On the bottle it says it exceeds gl4 & 5 so idk whether to use or not.

Factory spec is GL-5 80w90. That Lucas stuff should be fine. However, you should not use GL-4/GL-5 mix in the transmission, GL-4 only.

And I won't be like one of those assholes who just says "SEARCH!" and leaves. I recommend Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90:

The reason people say not to use GL-5 in our KA24E trannies is because GL-5 has certain chemicals that'll eat up the "yellow metals" in our trannies. Look up "yellow metals." GL-4, however, does NOT have that stuff (or maybe has stuff that prevents that from happening?) and is safe to use. Also, I may point out that in the 240SX S13 FSM, it SAYS to use GL-4. Go download the FSM pdf and save it to your computer. Mine is on my desktop.

Yep, I just got a few bottles of that, so I can drain the royal purple out of my transmission. It has stopped synchronizing so fast, I looked it up, and found out the mixed ones pretty much lie, and are not okay. (AND that gimmicky shit is more expensive than amsoil).

OP, that stuff is fine for your diff, DO NOT put it in your transmission. Trust me, unless you like grinding gears or shifting really slowly.

GL5 has a bunch of sulfur, GL 4 does not. GL4/GL5 has it "buffered", whatever that means, but practical experience seems to show that even when they explicetly say that it's fine for synchros, it's NOT, and should NOT be used. That means no valvoline, lucas, royal purple, and pretty much anything else except amsoil or redline, for your transmission.

kind of a coincidence, im doing a 5spd swap today/tomorrow and i just bought the gl4-5 valvoline shit. i wasnt sure if it was ok, so i should take it back huh? think autozone or advance has redline?

OP never mentioned what fluid he is changing, I read gear oil and assumed in the diff. Everything above is good info.

Amsoil is some of the best oil available. They won't have it at autozone, and I don't know about advace, but probably not. You can probably get it at local performance car places, some garages are dealers, some private individuals are dealers, ask someone with an amsoil sticker on their car.

Dealers may or may not have a big stock, but will probably be happy to order it for you. I had to wait a week for my gear oil.

Well, there ARE gears in both the tranny and differential :P what you want to look for is the specific type of gear oil. Like everyone's been pretty much saying, GL-5 for diff and GL-4 for tranny.

I've used both Redline and Amsoil. Both are the best stuff by far indeed however, Amsoil doesn't have somewhat grinding issue when its cold like Redline.

So I would recommend Amsoil like this guy below.

red line mt90 is gl4 rated and is good for yellow metals which are found inside nissan manual trans'.. i got my quarts for 15.95 a piece on summitracing.com

Same here but then I've never tried Amsoil. I should try it next time. Sounds like its a good brand but never really heard of til now. Thats why I went with redline. Lol.

It may be crap on paper, but I can assure you the motor honey and gear oil additive work great with big rigs, and many rebuilders swear by it.

Redline shifts 100% fine in my car. With that said I'm used to Domestic boxes and trucks, so you could take all fluid out of our transmissions and I think it would be smooth lol!

However. If you are filling a used transmission for the first time, there is a fairly good chance that the insides are quite filthy. So what I usually do when I pick up a fresh motorset is put 2.5quarts of the cheap generic junk in it, drive it around with that for a few miles. then dump it out and take a look. If it looks really nasty I will repeat the process until it starts coming out quite clean.

THEN put the expensive stuff in it.

Yeah just use your best judgement. IF it looks really nasty after only 10 miles then maybe go 20 and swap it out. IF it looks decent after 10 miles maybe go 50 then check again. The cheap stuff is cheap so use enough that it start coming out clean.
