So i bought this s13 ka24de like about 3-4 months ago & I haven't done an oil change since. It shoulda been the first thing but for some reason I never did. Anyways im in cali, the east bay the car has about 50 to 60K on a rebuilt engine I prefer myself to buy only valvoline. But I'm not to sure whether to buy 5w-30 or 10w-30. I hear alooot of mixed opinions between the two. ????

What weight oil you use depends on mileage and how hot/cold it is where you live. In my 240's I have always run 15 or 20w 50. I run thick oil because it's generally hot here in ca, my KA's have had pretty high mileage, and I like to drive them hard every so often. I would say that 10/30 is the MINIMUM. 5/30 is just too thin for an old engine.

The FSM tells you to run a 5w/30, that's brand new tho. I tried to run that for awhile when I got my s13 ( had 98k miles) and got a lot of seepage. Ive been running a 10w/30 for a couple years and seepage is minimal with this. Never tried a 15w on a KA tho, I would suspect a lot less seepage.
Hope u find the answer you're looking for!

Well im in hayward its been pretty hot lately during the day only till like 6pm. I have 50 to 60k on a rebuilt. I was thinking of going 0w-30Fe 5w-30Fe or 10w-30 & im choosing based off valvoline motor oil. I was reading about their oil grades on their site.

I see. So 0w-30 would not be the best bet would it.

Absolutely not. Like other's have stated the older the engine the heavier the weight. I personally run 15w-40 in my engine...

I clearly understand why you've said this ^ yes I know its a noob question but im tryna learn as much as I can. So sorry that you've been in the game alot longer than I have but its just a work in progress. We make mistakes & learn from it. Now I know what to use & what not to use on older engines. But thanks for your response. :mrmeph: in the nicest manner.

I've been pretty damn happy with Shell Rotella T6. It's full synthetic 5w40. Motorcycle guys love it because its the only non bike specific oil thats JASO-MA rated. Its pretty cheap for full synthetic, and I've never had any problem with it over the past 10k miles leaking or anything (KA24DE with 144k miles).

So you are going to do an oil change, if you bought a KA filter return it, if you used it take it off and toss it. The filter you want is a Wix 51342 or any brand cross referenced to that besides fram(the fram number is PH2870A for reference purposes only). They are from a 2000 Passat 1.8L turbo. Yes it is bigger, yes it will fit with no issues and has a bypass valve which KA filters do not.
