Like the title says I have been having this issue. I recently drop my tranny to replace my release bearing and pilot bushing. After putting it together I noticed my speedo stop working. Then a couple days want by and I noticed my miles stayed the same. I am sure I hooked up all the sensors correctly. Can somebody give me some insight or point in the right direction? I been reading around but can't find any solutions.
Thank you.

Definitely sounds like the speed sensor is disconnected in some way shape or form.

What gear would that be?

The one on the end of the speedo sensor. It is just a plastic gear and they can sometimes fail.

R u talking about the one in the gauge? I'm gonna under the car tomorrow and double check the sensors. Maybe I missed something.

Plastic gear he is talking about sits inside the transmission which is the sensor. Check your speed sensor wiring, you may have accidentally cut one of the 2 wires when removing/installing.

Gotcha. I will double check that. Thanks.

If that doesn't work, try switching the VSS polarity (reverse the two wires)... It's a polar signal (phased AC) and could be 180* off.

Mike, I verified polarity does not matter when tracing down my speedo issues. (Friendly FYI..since u def helped me to get it solved)
OP - I went through 2 clusters with bad speedos. What a pain..finally a third and it all works.
But then it went out AGAIN! I bent the prongs on the clip where it goes into cluster rear and bam. We are good.
But I feel you disconnected it while pulling tranny.
