I was just wondering, is it serious if there is a crack?

something with the steering column....does it keep dust out or something to protect the seals?

inb4 search, it did nothing, should be simple

The boot keeps dust/dirt/crap from getting into your rack and pinion. There are two, one on each side of the rack.

hmm so would a crack that has been for a while hurt the car badly?

say a month, with a medium crack

Dear op. perhaps you should try to describe you problem.
Instead of asking what the purpose is, tell us what you are experiencing.

Pics always help. A visual is better than a paragraph.

You could (after making sure there's no dirt or water or anything in it) tape it up with a plastic bag.

You're going to have to take off your tie rod ends to replace them, and as such, you'll need to make sure you put them in the exact same place, and ideally get an alignment anyway. It's also a good time to replace tie rod ends, rack bushings, or anything else down there.

It's just a dust shield. Keeps dirt and grime from getting in your rack. They're cheap. Like under $20. Get that shit replaced. I'm not even going to suggest you try it yourself. Consult a professional.

Problem you have is, there some grease in there to help lub the rack some. It doesnt take much for dirt to get mixed into that grease and chew up the rack seal. Would you rather replace a $6 part or replace a $300 rack and have to get a full alignment?

He's correct whole racks go for $250-$300. I'm in search of one myself. Previous owner didn't replace the boots :-(

I can get a rack re-built for about $150, including new inner tie rods and boots...

Where in the hell are you guys getting $300??? There are probably more than a few re-builders in your area that can re-build your rack for half that much...
