jk. this thing is going to get retarded.

trying to resist drifting this thing, but it already has a welded. mainly going to focus on fixing small things and making this oem+ (as euro guys say, right?)

Just a heads up (pun lol). All HUD equipped coupes had full power options, so either this car was converted to manual power windows and locks or HUD was installed into a base model by a 3rd party. If you care to know exactly you can PM me your VIN# and I can tell you for sure.

Great car btw. Can't wait to see another two-tone come back to life!

yeah the dude installed it himself. car sat for a year and now it doesn't work anymore. going to pull the dash out at some point to re-wrap it anyway.

cleaned up the interior. looked like the previous owners were the messiest slobs ever. spilled soda, candy wrappers, gum, coins and hairs everywhere. it was like no one ever attempted to clean the interior.

yes, i've done lots, and lots of scrubbing

timing chain fun!
http://i.imgur.com/UxTGR0O.jpg

i've spent more time cleaning this motherfucker than actually doing anything mechanical. killed 2 wire brushes cleaning the bay and transmission. still need to finish cleaning the crossmember and motor.

as we took the motor apart we found the spark plugs hadn't been replaced in like... forever... and the thermostat is rusty as dick. new waterpump and the pistons appear to be in good shape and the head gasket isn't leaking at all so that makes me happy :D

10 days till i need this bitch ready to drift.

also, my wheels arrived.

Nice progress! What color is the engine bay?

it's gunmetal with the glitter

worked on it for 20 hours the last two days trying to get it together for an event this weekend, but this afternoon i realized the guy didn't give me the maf with the motor. scrambled trying to find someone local with one, but no luck. got a tip that pick n pull had a dohc 240 just put in the yard yesterday. got there 13 minutes till close, found the car and wouldn't you know the only thing missing was the god damn maf.

so i decided to mess around with my friend's wheels and partially installed my kit (not actually going to have this much camber. wheels aren't bolted on)

mocked up the front signals, side markers, rear valances, and threw the thrash in for fun. stoked that the random no name valances i found in the classifieds match up with the kit pretty well. might need to do some work on the bottom edge to make it a little sharper to match the skirts, but over all i'm very pleased :)

Lookin' good!

thanks! i'm undecided. supposedly the bumper is meant to cover the body line so in that case i'd go without. the line on the bumper is clean so it'll look fine and it lines up with the contours going into the main opening in the front of the bumper. i'll make a final decision once i finish the body work and put the rest of the body tape on.

wow haven't updated in forever.

http://i.imgur.com/sGAjJ7Q.jpg

fuel pump died and when i pulled it i found a bunch of debris in the tank, so i pulled it for cleaning and decided to do subframe risers at the same time
http://i.imgur.com/bt8trAt.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/ctqaHUX.jpg

after driving around a bit and adjusting the rear height/camber to fit the vishunu's after doing the risers i found they were rubbing both the fender lip and wheel well... beat the well and tried to pull the fender a little more, but it didn't do anything, so i just left it haha
http://i.imgur.com/J5gHUL9.jpg

started mocking up the diffuser
http://i.imgur.com/jwLJZx5.jpg

i was driving to work one morning and about three blocks from my house i went around a turn and suddenly it sounded like there was a harley driving right next to me, but there was nothing. thought my exhaust might have partially come undone or cracked my header at the flange. popped the hood and found the o2 sensor decided it needed to take a brake hahaha
http://i.imgur.com/aUyOSNB.jpg

drove up to oregon for a drift even (about 6 hours each way) in awesome 100 degree heat. car managed to do just fine, but rotaries aren't such a fan of heat haha
http://i.imgur.com/RHMLXxl.jpg

car ran perfect all weekend, but i was sick as a dog the entire time and didn't even drive the second day, just went straight home in the morning. (pulled the hood off as a precaution)

painted repaired/new parts

trailered the car to an event for the first time ever and of corse my friend who was street driving his car, broke it. so instead of pushing the car too hard in the 106 degree weather and with my axles on the way out i decided to jump in the grip group and see what the car could do. actually had a pretty fun time. i'd like to do more grip driving some day... only got one lap on video.

Final Bout was approaching and the goodies started pouring in. picked up origin canards, "dmax" hood, and kouki wing.

the kouki wing had been chopped to fit a vert fc so i had to do some work to get it to fit right on the coupe trunk

shaved the trunk because ricer

http://i.imgur.com/2K0aB9M.jpg

107801269

i cracked my fender a little at final bout, but i cracked it more, and another crack appeared at sonoma. pretty sad because these fenders were fucking perfect
http://i.imgur.com/E11YUh2.jpg

finally these rails for the ergo showed up
http://i.imgur.com/cCVtsKw.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/RU5h3Zn.jpg

traded the kouki wing straight up for this chargespeed type 1. dude had no idea what it was and to be honest, neither did i, but i knew it was something cooler than the kouki haha
http://i.imgur.com/YpO0dA0.jpg

did a winter drift series just for fun. 4 rounds are just solo runs and the final is invitational tandem comp (based on how you seed in the prior rounds)
http://i.imgur.com/NJn9zFN.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/OAOyIbO.jpg

managed to snag first and got to stand atop matt field's beater :D
http://i.imgur.com/33LURKN.jpg

painted/mounted the chargespeed. felt kinda "meh" about it
http://i.imgur.com/iagTXzt.jpg

they set up "meihan" layout on the sonoma skidpad. it was a lot of fun, but there was one bump right after the entry that was unsettling my car. it caused me to spin out a few times, but the rest of the time it was fine. but during the last session of the night it began to rain. second run out i spun and my buddy plowed into the front of me. (random clip)
QwKS9ipNB4I

http://i.imgur.com/qoMANc9.jpg

while inspecting the damage later that week i noticed the frame rail and rad support were no longer connected. that explained why the front end felt so loose... welded it back together and it felt soooooo much better (obviously)
http://i.imgur.com/DGGhRCJ.jpg

round 2 of the drift series was very wet

finally found a good deal on an sr. same price as local importers were asking for stock redtops, but this came with a ton of goodies. basically ready to be put in and get beat on.

came with tomei exhaust manifold and rocker stoppers, metal headgasket, arp head studs, moroso baffled oil pan, isis downpipe, oil cooler lines (i already have a cooler), wiring specialty harness for s14, t28, bunch of aem gauges and wideband and boost controller, apexi power fc d-jetro, and it's been tuned by works, putting out 237hp 233tq at 10psi. should be fun!

random accessories...

^ah yeah, brown/maroon-ish. doesn't seem appropriate for this thread now hahaha

but yeah uh...

got the sr in
http://i.imgur.com/myyu6Fq.jpg

had a long internal debate about changing the color of the car. in the end i decided it didn't really make sense to not paint it just because it's a two tone. the only thing that made me question it is other people, and other people can fuck off, so i went for it :D some day i would like to return it to two tone though haha

http://i.imgur.com/QxEr8J3.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/7j8fy7X.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/V7me8KL.jpg

basically got it done just in time for final bout. didn't get the car running until the day before we needed to load the cars onto the trailer. luckily the sr fired right up and ran perfect first try. i didn't even see the car at normal ride height until the day before final bout because i had to keep it as high as it could go to load on the trailer and it still scraped the subframe all the way up

luckily i brought a spare transmission, but i was so exhausted from the previous week of sleepless nights it took me until sunday afternoon to get it back on the track.

^thanks dadmon!

i guess i'll add another update now...

pulled the second transmission. found stock flywheel and 6 puc unsprung clutch, which i figured were mostly to blame for the transmission deaths. realized the flywheel bolts and bolt holes were stripped too (thanks p.o.!)

http://i.imgur.com/KN2ZhWW.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/7dpEAXl.jpg

all back together and ready for final bout ssw
http://i.imgur.com/Evgxxsx.jpg

started it up and it started knocking right away, then we messed with the timing and thought we bent a valve :D
http://i.imgur.com/GtIPmYF.jpg

finally got around to fitting the ls460 tips
http://i.imgur.com/u1YCH6o.jpg

had to bridge the stock exhaust cutout
http://i.imgur.com/5Lc8hRL.jpg

made some sheetmetal brackets and mounted them real good
http://i.imgur.com/Pw7LOyS.jpg

also i picked up these spare wonder skirts from wolfreign. they bought them from boss aero, who was in the process of modifying them, so one skirt had the middle section cut out. fortunately it was still partially connected so i glassed it back together.
http://i.imgur.com/akEZy2R.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/wo0ZXY5.jpg
(don't have finished pics, but trust me it doesn't look this shitty.
http://i.imgur.com/O4SUguz.jpg

so i picked up a new head i the hopes that i could just swap it out for the old one (with a bent valve)
http://i.imgur.com/vuAcg7i.jpg

deolio
12-02-2016, 03:10 PM
so the "new" head turned out to already have been pretty aggressively decked and even with the thickest (1.8mm) headgasket available the compression ratio would have been at like 10:1. luckily my friend in SoCal had a stock head sitting around that he was willing to let go for cheap. so one of my other friends grabbed it and brought it up for me. i took it to the machine shop and they found one of the cam journals was fucked. would have been about $600 to fix.

so at this point i just said fuck it and pulled my head off the motor, planning just to replace the bent valve(s) and pray i had the right sized shims (too late to order at this point). and wouldn't you know it, there weren't any bent valves. so then we were super confused. we did the leak down 3 times and got the same result every time. soooo????

http://i.imgur.com/iYjSAqB.jpg

checked the new crank and bearings since we pulled everything off to check the timing and found one of the bearings was already down to the copper after only like 20-30min of running time. said fuck it and threw everything back together, hoping it would at least last a couple runs at final bout.

http://i.imgur.com/A1iniQ9.jpg

back together and "running" a week before fb ssw
http://i.imgur.com/OCoWD4V.jpg

got my exhaust did. real dual exhaust for more ricer points
http://i.imgur.com/TOEaUPo.jpg

fixed my sexy style front bumper for the 69th time
http://i.imgur.com/dgueC2L.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/tImw5Vq.jpg

the squad
http://i.imgur.com/AFMPX91.jpg

then went and did some skids, promptly blowing up the front bumper on the first turn of the first run hahaha
http://i.imgur.com/fXaNiQj.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/EYJjJNM.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/Xj46l7j.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/pmkGXye.jpg

so the motor ended up lasting 15-20 laps before starting to really knock bad, which was way more than i expected.

sr out again!
http://i.imgur.com/Q0z2mvS.jpg

and taken apart again!
http://i.imgur.com/KcrLcdL.jpg

lol rip

rod 1 bearings were totally gone. had to change the rod. good thing at this point i have all the spare parts hahaha
http://i.imgur.com/oFMqtGC.jpg

changed the con rod, put in the new bearings and the repaired crank.

got invited to a private shakedown day with nakamura and the animal style dudes the wednesday before super d, which was super rad. felt pretty cool parking next to nakamura haha let him borrow one of my coil packs for a little bit because one of his went out and when i put it back on my car i swear it drove better hahaha

http://i.imgur.com/lwwQtct.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/GOSeGd1.jpg

was messing around with entering at the start/finish line all day. got a little hairy a couple times hahaha was super fun though
http://i.imgur.com/uyMooZO.jpg

sunday was mayhem. i tried to change my driver side axel in the morning, but the hangover was making it impossible so i gave up. third run in nick spun, dom locked up his brakes, and i smashed his qp. for the first time ever, i think i actually came out with less damage, which is surprising. just gotta glass my bumper back together and get a new bash bar. went out to drive the next session and the car would rev up, but not really move anywhere. pulled back into the pits and was sure my clutch or trans was fried.
http://i.imgur.com/DRNvSOx.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/XBsUxEF.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/w1fNAnp.jpg

wasn't until loading up monday morning, that i realized only one of the rear wheels was getting power. pretty sure it's just a broken axel thank fuck
http://i.imgur.com/pY9AvCJ.jpg

been working with my buddy to design a splitter/canard setup for the wonder bumper so it'll have a bit more protection in the future. going to mount the splitter to the bash bar so the bumper can just kinda sit on it. it's going to be made out of dibond (aluminum and pvc composite) which supposedly is strong enough to handle a lot of abuse
http://i.imgur.com/6ZHMV9g.png

also picked up a new motor to start working on. going to take a lot of work, but i'm confident it'll be worth it in the end

Love the idea of a different engine swap from the crowd, but why not the f22 from an s2k? Its already rwd and wouldnt be as difficult to swap.

price. initial investment is high, but if i ever throw a rod through the block, it'll be way cheaper. also, fuck the s2k transmission. i'll be running a k series to w5x bellhousing, hopefully keeping costs lower there as well.

decided to make a temporary splitter out of plywood until i get around to making the one for the wonder.

http://i.imgur.com/cyhjsvW.jpg

i drove about 1.5hr to my friends house. we were planning on checking out some mountain roads and such, but it got dark earlier than expected and started raining super hard. there was literally a stream running across his road. and all the roads around his house are super shitty. the splitter saved my bumper at least a dozen times. my headlights are still misaligned from the crash and my heater doesn't work so i seriously couldn't see shit haha basically drove home following the lane dots

got tired of having to run 215/35's and constantly cracking front wheels so i got rid of the fxx's and picked up 6 dr's 17/18 stagger. amazing how much better the front of the car already feels running a 40 series

http://i.imgur.com/20dnJ5X.jpg

noticed my td05 had a bit more shaft play than i felt comfortable with and the lag was killing me so i picked up a brand new s15 t28.

also got villains stub shafts and z33 axles. not sure how it'll work out just yet as i wasn't able to remove the stock stub shafts. i figure they're seized in the diff due to it being welded :-/

for anyone wondering about things on the k24 front - just slowly collecting parts. probably not going to be any real updates until this winter.

grabbed a bunch of stuff off a shell at my buddy's house for future improvements

i've had some pbm rear knuckles sitting on a shelf for over a year so i decided it was time to put them on. only issue was how short the lower mounts on my coilovers were. had been using r32 gtr fronts in the rear for as long as i've owned the car. cool for going dumb low, but if i had put the kuckle on with them, i'm pretty sure the car would be sitting on the subframe. old r32 left, new s13 right
http://i.imgur.com/cm9dXuM.jpg

just a little comparison of drop knuckle vs stock at the same height
http://i.imgur.com/YnQVeLK.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/JZJuSIv.jpg

had cut the subframe bushing washer for toe rod clearance. no problem anymore!
http://i.imgur.com/SRiYvSO.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/bIzkeHs.jpg

the knuckles pushed the wheel way further out. had a 5mm spacer on these 9.5 +22's before and the wheel was just about flush with the fender and had a few mm of clearance. now the tire is juuuust touching the fender with no spacer on. looks like about a 7-8mm difference from stock knuckles at the same height.
http://i.imgur.com/hj5cldk.jpg

also got some acadia rotors and brackets. much larger than stock :)
http://i.imgur.com/1IY2N1T.jpg

also did arp extended studs, which required new lug nuts. will never buy anything other than steel. had my last set of sr48's since 2009
http://i.imgur.com/6C4to65.jpg

and for the front, the whole pbm package. picked up these old 330mm rotors and brackets just before they announced they were going to repman z32 calipers, so i patiently waited until they were out to install.
http://i.imgur.com/Sik2XHI.jpg

i was a little concerned about clearance in the 17's, but it looks like there was nothing to worry about. hopefully will have time to finish installing everything this week. here's pbm compared to q45 brakes

Lag on a td05? Weird.

think it's exaggerated due to the 1.8mm headgasket

so i totaly didn't pay attention to the markings on my bmc before cutting it to try to remove the fitting to use in the 1 1/16" bmc haha apparently aftermarket bmc's don't have the fitting pressed in, but machined into the bmc instead :picardfp:

http://i.imgur.com/qGxcdOq.jpg

ended up getting a new bubble fitting (m10x1.0) and doing a bubble flare to make the z32 bmc work. the brakes feel only slightly stiffer than stock with the 1 1/16" bmc. feels great!

also finished installing the arp extended studs. i've installed studs some sketchy ways in the past, but after using this tool, never again. holy shit it made it so much easier hahaha

http://i.imgur.com/FfZBrI4.jpg

so i finished installing the brakes, bmc, lugs, and doing some maintenance late friday night. did a street tune early saturday morning. car finally feels sooooo amazing... or at least like it should have felt for the last two years...

loaded it up with all the aero on too, which was cool haha having a tow rig with height control makes life easy :)

http://i.imgur.com/SxhuWY7.jpg

unloading at the track, i realized my car was spewing power steering fluid. not boiling, but the pump was just pushing all of the fluid out of my rack for some reason :ugh: bled the system, nothing, checked the lines were hooked up right, they were. at this point they were about to close the gate, so we had to leave, but not before taking a booty pic

http://i.imgur.com/AvvFQ2A.jpg

couldn't find any fix without changing out the ps pump in the morning, so i just grabbed an extra bottle of fluid to top it off ever few runs. the grid had a lot of good looking cars

http://i.imgur.com/rENVnPP.jpg

the car was running great and staying cool despite the lack of ducting (meant to do some, but totally slipped my mind) and warm 90 degree weather.

http://i.imgur.com/D0Up017.jpg

i was pushing pretty hard all day trying to qualify for top 16, which meant smashing my wheel into my teammate's, which didn't go so well :hs:

http://i.imgur.com/VE8N0kn.jpg

a friend graciously let me borrow a wheel so i could continue driving, but i was out of ps fluid and time. qualifying had ended and i got cut :(

but the comp was quick and we got to go back out to do some fun runs. i kept pushing like a dickhead and hit my friends car a couple more times. made wheel-to wheel contact with the borrowed wheel and took a small chunk out of it and finally bent a tie rod. decided to call it a day there before i break more shit.

pbm, pbm.

so the car came with a welded already in it when i bought it. the drain and fill plugs were both stripped out, so i never changed the fluid. not once over the last 3+ years haha. finally got around to installing a 4.3 final drive and welding/plating the spare diff i picked up a while ago. also put the villains stub shafts and z33 axles in. should be solid as hell now!
http://i.imgur.com/TuNlxvC.jpg

drove it around a bit and took it in for an alignment
http://i.imgur.com/0JSetna.jpg

it gave me a chance to check out how much of a difference hot side knuckles made under load. arms and tie rods are nearly level now  (ignore the grime. fucking chase bays power steering kit  )
http://i.imgur.com/rb5decG.jpg

and the rears with the pbm knuckle. not quite level, but a hell of a lot better than before!
http://i.imgur.com/A8B1By5.jpg

and somehow the rear alignment stayed in spec without a single adjustment after putting the pbm knuckles on

sunday started off cool. trying to figure out the new setup while learning the track reverse was a challenge. it became very apparent that getting my rack moved forward is necessary to take full advantage of the knuckles. having a 4.3 is awesome. i've never had the ability to actually maintain a drift in third gear before hahaha

http://i.imgur.com/svfUFH4.jpg

i was having a ton of fun just trying to rip as hard as i could, but was only able to get 5-6 full drifting runs in due to the run group getting black flagged a bunch of times (broken cars on track) and the car getting a little warmer than i was comfortable with. and then there was fire...

http://i.imgur.com/8Sl8M2J.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/C1pn47a.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/hhkuQ5c.jpg

it seems that an off-track excursion caused my downpipe to separate from the turbo, which was enough to get something ignited under the hood, which spread to the breather tube, hood, and bmc. i had an extinguisher in my car, but it didn't really do anything. a guy behind me hopped out of his car and tried to help too, but his extinguisher didn't really do anything either, so we just had to sit there and wait until the professionals arrived.

the damage doesn't really look too bad. hood, a couple tubes, and some heat shielding were the only real casualties. probably also need to replace the coil pack harness, throttle cable, and windshield cowell cover. really just don't want to have to clean everything up. going to be a mess and a pain in the ass :(

al was easily able to keep up with me, and touched the butt, so naturally he won.

pulled in after the battle and the left side of the car was clunking. thought it was my axel somehow, but i couldn't find anything definitive. dom broke a spring off his clutch disk so i let him borrow my car to do his top 16 run in. he went in the first turn and the ebrake stayed up. second run was pretty solid. it was cool to see my car shooting dual flames haha. when he pulled back in the clunking was worse. i found some metal shavings around the left wheel. then i realized the lug nuts weren't centered in the holes. loose lugs DOH

https://i.imgur.com/UXMbxQN.jpg

not sure how they loosened or if i just didn't tighten them all the way or what, but it was fine for a dozen or so runs before being noticeable...

oh well. at least i have two pairs of rear wheels. i'm sure the local wheel repair shop i've taken my broken shit to before can fix it no problem.

roy was nice enough to install some auto-collect storm fender braces for me at the track. fenders are sturdy as hell now! also got a harness protector, but not sure where it ended up after the event

That line is the result of using the improper hose type for the application. I had that kit on my KA and it did the same thing. Normal an hose should never be used in a push-on application.

Car is rad btw man, how's turn in/braking with that much camber up front? Looks like the hotside knuckle has about the perfect amount of roll center correction!

damnnn that kit looks nice as hell! yeah I thought the use of an for that hose was odd. we’ll see how long this fix lasts then it might be time to switch over to your kit haha

thanks! feels pretty good considering. squirms a bit under hard braking, which isn’t surprising. once i’ve got some wider front fenders i’m gonna try to dial some camber out. the knuckles are perfect. there’s a dip in the skidpad that used to rip the wheel out of my hands with my old knuckles, but it wasn’t even noticeable with hotside.

Super D Cup Round 4! It was pretty rad. the layout was a lot of fun. the morning started off very wet. i swear i watched like 15-20 runs before someone linked the layout without spinning (including me haha) but after everyone aired way down and figured out how to be gentile as fuck, it was game on!

super d qualifying is run like a jam session, where it's a free for all and the judges keep track of who is driving good and whatnot throughout the session, which is pretty rad imo. i was able to get in a ton of runs with dom, dan from daring partners, wolfreign aaron, and the animal style dudes before qualifying was over.

(just a couple pics from qualifying. more to come...)
https://i.imgur.com/ZwP7uJ1.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/AEzgLc7.jpg

top 16 battles are set up by randomly drawing out of a hat. as soon as they drew dom's name i had a feeling it was going to be a battle of the team mates. i was right. we did ro-sham-bo to determine who led first, winner leading first. i won. seemed like dom was on my tail the entire time, so going into my follow run i knew i had to push it, which led to some carnage hahaha

https://i.imgur.com/CDE3laV.jpg

i cut the first corner a little too close, running over a tire, which instantly launched my sideskirt like a missile and almost came through my window. i also cut the second corner a bit too tight, which caused my already broken bumper to shed some fiberglass, which flew in the air, over my car, and landed on my trunk before falling to the ground. i think the mayhem helped me move on to the next round... to battle julian...

i lead first again. julian was on my door the entire time of corse. i did a hard chuck into the last hairpin to try to scare him off, but he wasn't fazed. again, i pushed hard on my follow. i guess it was enough because we went one more time. my second lead run was nearly identical to the first, but i was able to pull out a little more of a gap. on the follow, i was super close on initiation, but then halfway through the turn the car began to slow and grip up. somehow i was able to keep him from pulling out too much of a gap, but in the last turn i didn't have enough power to dig out, gripped up, and sadly lost the battle.

after the comp ended, i let my friend take my car out for a few runs. it looked like he was struggling, so i hopped in. sure enough, the car was down on power. i thought it was just a fluke in comp, but when i got back to the pits and looked through the bay i found the problem.

https://i.imgur.com/sDaVV2d.jpg

i was glad that it was a simple fix this time, but i didn't have any spare couplers at the track so i called it a day.

so amazing seeing how much everyone who has driven all (or most) rounds has progressed just from this silly little skidpad competition.

here's a little video from the event

to answer that question:

https://i.imgur.com/MDbK01V.jpg

uras sent the wrong box canards and the brackets/hardware for the diffuser got misplaced. but uhhhh i'm still very excited. grabbed some origin front fenders and kinda mocked up the front end. i've been running 13mm of spacers on one side of the car and none on the other, thinking my fenders were just messed up, since i can't recall a specifically hard hit to the passenger side since doing the tube front, but putting these new fenders on confirmed my fears. looks like the front is out of whack in one way or another. guess it's time to get the old girl on a frame rack and see what's up before starting paint prep :naughty:

^thanks dood!

started on body work. hitting it with the block made me notice i had way more body damage than i thought. passenger side qp in front and behind of the well is pushed in, bad dents on the lip of the qp around the well, door has dents, roof and trunk have dents from aero landing on it, and drivers side qp in front and behind the well have some mild dents as well as the door. i was hoping i'd be able to salvage the qp's, but it appears there's too much previous damage and rust to save (did a decent amount of work on them the two previous times i painted the car. metal has been pushed and pulled a lot). gonna try my best, but i do have a pair of overs laying in wait :wtc: ps. don't mind the dick.

SAVE THEM. I regret cutting for overs :(
there's just something about that factory metal.

i mean, i'm all for factory metal. hate when people put overs on perfectly good quarters, but there's definitely a time and a place for overs haha

found a lot more filler than i expected. impressed that somehow none of it cracked. there was a bit of rust underneath it though. there's a line of rust near the door that seems to nearly be all the way through. kinda makes me scared to pull the dents out.

https://i.imgur.com/kLH0YdB.jpg

there was also a TON of filler on the back of the qp. a few inches below the tail light and down was coated with about 1.5mm of filler/paint and up to about 4mm in some spots  took a long ass time to get it all off of there. also found several spots of rust and the metal is warped as hell. i really don't see any saving it. even getting it good enough to fit an over without being all wavy is gonna take some time.

https://i.imgur.com/rI7yYEt.jpg

but yeah, so i made a list today. very overwhelmed at the moment, but i know i've been in worse shape with shorter deadlines so it should all work out just fine haha

-straighten qp for overs
-cut qp
-modify overs
-design/install vents for fenders
-modify mirrors to fit
-modify tube front for lights
-fix hood latch
-design/install bumper fitment guides + corner light bracket
-splitter
-windshield
-paint
-clutch
-vinyl
-exhaust
-fit aero

haha thanks jy!

i started modding the overs. car modify wonder doesn't offer the vented overs for coupe so i decided to make my own. luckily my team mate's car has some on his hatch, unfortunately i didn't have any paper on hand, but i just needed it to be in decent enough shape to start a template -> enter paper towel
https://i.imgur.com/hMZYsud.jpg

transferred the crappy trace to a coors box (next best thing to matboard for making templates imo)
https://i.imgur.com/k9W7w3K.jpg

tidied it up real nice and verified that it was acurate
https://i.imgur.com/tyNpaq1.jpg

then got to cutting
https://i.imgur.com/gXKiStE.jpg

mounted on car kinda decently to figure out how big of a vent i could make and went back to the coors box to make a spacer thingy to keep it in shape for fiberglassing
https://i.imgur.com/SJDtL39.jpg

the slathered some nasty shit on them
https://i.imgur.com/qReXoEs.jpg

kinda a janky method, but i wasn't looking to spend an entire day on these things when i feel like wonder is just going to come out with some actual ones by the time i destroy these hunks of junk. hopefully it won't take too much more work to get them to look good. already spent a decent amount of time blocking them and sanding down all the shitty defects from the mold. don't think origin cares much about the tatakadasi molds now that type 3 flare bullshit is all the rage. anyway, i guess we'll find out if i put enough hardener in the resin tomorrow! :2f2f:

haha rip two tone preservation :)

supposedly they'll be here when my hood arrives? shipped the incorrect ones they sent me back a couple weeks ago so :ugh: hopefully... did take 6 months to get the aero so my hopes aren't too high hahaha

i was supposed to paint last week, but my friend doing the paint got called into work, so we put it off to this week. i picked up all the paint and supplies yesterday and then we set up our shitty cheap-o booth, which took FAR longer than expected. 420 staples and 69ft of tape later...
https://i.imgur.com/i2XTon1.jpg

wiped the car down, masked it up, popped the primer open and realized they forgot to throw it on the mixer at the paint shop. tried to mix it by hand, but it was like arm wrestling the hulk and by then it was 10:15pm.
https://i.imgur.com/LkDQ2FR.jpg

so we called it a night. need to reschedule again and now california has decided it's winter for real and it's supposed to rain for the next week and a half, which means painting isn't such a good idea without a proper setup, which i clearly don't have... man the anxiety is driving me insane :2f2f: such a tease being so close yet so far

i countersunk the rivet holes a bit. small little touch that i don't see many people do and i don't know why. i only removed gel coat, so it won't make it any weaker.
https://i.imgur.com/VXiuwqk.jpg

went to spray primer and realized whoever used the primer gun last didn't clean it out and ruined the gun (isn't sharing a shop fun????). got a new gun, but it sounded like a blowoff valve when letting off the trigger. air was somehow leaking into the gun. exchanged it for a different one after trying to get it to seal for a half hour and tried again, but not luck. so i switched to a slightly different model, which finally worked...
https://i.imgur.com/S5BfFB1.jpg

primed the car and then managed to somehow fit all of the aero and little bits in the booth, but ran out of primer thanks to wasting a bit fucking around with the first two paint guns.

then we finally laid base on the roof

and then on the body

could have finished the car and the aero today, but of corse things can't go smoothly lol our air compressor is on it's last legs and progressively getting worse. currently 5 minutes of spraying equates to about 40-45min of the compressor running. basically took 1.5hr to get a single coat down. hoping we can find a compressor to borrow so everything can get done tomorrow...

new intercooler came in. from 30x12x2.75 to 28.5x9x3.5. only a 100 cubic inches smaller. not bad! but i've still gotta make a bracket to hold the headlights, grill, fmic, hood latch, radiator, and ducting together. probably gonna be ugly as hell for the time being and refine it once i'm not in a time crunch.

whew! just got home from super d. ended up spending an extra week in socal to make up for spending the last few months working on the car to my girlfriend :2f2f:

we left friday at 3am to head to the track. got there around noon and set up the booth
https://i.imgur.com/fvBkFqa.jpg

took the car out and gripped for several laps, trying to break the new clutch in
https://i.imgur.com/A21i8Xg.jpg

but that didn't last long as naoki appeared in my rear view mirror and i couldn't hold back so i let it rip. the clutch seemed to be working
https://i.imgur.com/Bu5FP2m.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/6CWsYXB.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/LU7emF2.jpg

but after a few laps and ejecting the rear bumper, things started feeling kinda funky. went back to gripping and the clutch was slipping under boost :-/ kept gripping the rest of the day and then saturday morning and it started to feel like it was grabbing through the rpm's. but apparently it wasn't enough because after the first drifting turn it started slipping again.
https://i.imgur.com/G90q9MU.jpg

i parked it in pits to save it, hoping that i'd at least be able to get in a run of team tandem before glazing it completely, but as soon as my team mates left the line, my revs shot to the moon without the car moving anywhere :duh: i'm such an idiot. but on the bright side at least the lack of driving kept the aero destruction to a minimum i guess :2f2f:
https://i.imgur.com/awOThKs.jpg

drove straight to my buddy's shop and dropped the car off still on the trailer when i got back to sac so we can fix it this weekend. guess i'm just gonna replace the clutch and flywheel with a more robust combo just in case ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

no pics to go with this update, sorry :'(

i pulled the trans and found the clutch and flywheel to be in ok condition. so i was a bit confused until my buddy's co worker pointed out i was missing the clutch fork retainer clip thing that holds it onto the pivot ball. to be honest, i didn't even know there was one. never seen one on any of the transmissions i've ever had. also noticed the inside of the throwout bearing was a bit scuffed (where there's the larger recess between the front and rear shoulders... idk how to explain..). i'm thinking when i was putting the trans back in, the throwout was too far forward on the input shaft and was stuck on the shoulder inside the throwout, not allowing the clutch to fully engage. seems like an odd problem to have, but it makes sense now that i think about the weird clutch "engagement" point.

anyway, hopefully that was the issue. new registration tags are on the way so i can drive the car on the street once again and break the clutch in the proper way.

also, the k20 head has been assembled and ready to go on, but now i gotta prep the k24 block for it :) oh and i scored a bmw zf 5spd. accumulating parts slooowly, but surely.

today though, i went to my friend's house. he's had this hatch sitting there for a couple months that he and his gf bought for parts. we got to talking about it annnnnnd i decided to buy it. i just can't stay away from the s chassis. plan is still to kinda set it up as a grip car, but i'd still like to be able to drift it while the coupe is down for the k swap.

had a long internal debate about changing the color of the car. in the end i decided it didn't really make sense to not paint it just because it's a two tone. the only thing that made me question it is other people, and other people can fuck off, so i went for it :D some day i would like to return it to two tone though haha

Nice to see how the car has evolved.

And don't worry about changing it to two-tone, I'm buying a black one and making it two-tone :coold:

just started working on the hatch a little. hopefully the wheels, rotors, and coils will come in this week and i'll be able to bring it home.

replaced the flca's and put 5 lug hubs on. ball joints were straight REKT. $25 for brand new oem lca's with ball joints and bushings is hard to beat! the tension rods have also seen better days, but i'll change them out later on.

https://i.imgur.com/B7S2ufL.jpg

also, i finally got the hatch's po's username. this was the build thread (http://zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=502676) for this car, but none of the pics work.

wheels, tires, rotors, and pads came in so i went over to my buddy's house and installed them, loaded the car up, and brought it home.

https://i.imgur.com/w3Zrkki.jpg

had to organize the shit out of the garage to make space for the car. moved from a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage house to this dinky 1 bedroom, 1 car garage (landlord uses the other half of the garage) house so space is tight.

https://i.imgur.com/hr4SfLX.jpg

and THEN i traded injectors with my friend since the ones i bought had the wrong plug type  and put them in the coupe and drove it home. it had been sitting at my parent's house for a couple months while i was dealing with moving. on the way i noticed the car was running much more rich than before. the previous owner of my motor had said the injectors were 550's, but now i'm suspecting that they weren't :ugh: so now it looks like it'll need a new tune, but the clutch is still slipping so i guess it's just a garage ornament for now :hsdance:

haha thanks!

i ended up checking the injectors and it was just a torn o-ring thankfully

started driving the car around again, trying to do a legit break in on the clutch. felt pretty good. probably put around 250 miles on it, which is about 90% more break in time than any other clutch i've ever put in. second and third gear pulls felt solid. no signs of slipping at all, but living where i do, a 4th gear pull was out of the question.

pretty much just prayed that it'd be ok and decided to street drive the car to an event at thunder hill in hopes that some extra break-in time would ensure it'd hold. but being the dickhead i am, as soon as i got on 80 east i gave it the beans in 4th gear and just slipped the fuck out of the clutch once boost hit.

i drove like a grandma the rest of the way to sacramento to grab some wheels and tires and then up to willows, knowing that i was doomed yet again hahaha i shoulda just bought a higher rated clutch to begin with or at least switched to it the first time i pulled the trans back off, but i'm the worst mechanic ever so...

i drifted anyways

https://i.imgur.com/ysZbbHy.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/0xj1CEs.jpg

got like 5 runs in before it started getting sketchy. then drove it back to my friend's shop in sacramento to change out the clutch hopefully this weekend. got another event coming up the following weekend so it'd be pretty cool to finally get in my first full event of 2018... in november...

after countless people's suggestions, i ended up ordering an exedy stage 2 cerametalic 3-puc and flywheel. the car was sitting at my buddy's shop for a couple weeks and when i went there to install the clutch, it started smoking like crazy. figured it would just burn off, so i loaded it on the trailer and took it home.

https://i.imgur.com/7Gc4pnr.jpg

i removed the livery and finally got around to painting and installing the box canards.

https://i.imgur.com/kNW12ht.jpg

also decided to give grippy front tires another go

https://i.imgur.com/YWQXmEW.jpg

went to the track and unloaded the car the day before so i could somewhat "break in" the clutch on the way to and from the hotel. the car smoked pretty bad when i unloaded it, but i still thought it would go away, but on the 10 minute drive to the hotel, nothing changed :ugh: clutch felt great though

https://i.imgur.com/mSlIH64.jpg

figured the valve seals or guides were the source of the oil burning. had my friend follow me to the track in the morning to verify the smoke was mostly on idle and decel, which it was.

like always, i said fuck it, and still drove, despite blowing more smoke than a subaru meet. just added a bit of oil a couple times throughout the day. i've been planning on doing a refresh anyway because i don't trust the work we did a couple years ago when i had the motor in and out 3 times in 6 months or whatever, so i figured any additional damage done would be fixed anyway haha

drove with roy all day. super fun challenge to keep up with him. 255 nt05 @28psi vs 225 kr20 @20psi hahaha

also worked on chucks a bit at the end of the day (last clip of vid below). i've never really tried to throw "backies" before, because my focus has always been on tandem and consistency. was a fun change of pace. the car definitely feels way better with grip up front now. next is to get the back end hooked up a bit better too... once the motor is in good shape...

finally got a chance to head to the shop to pull the motor. upon disassembly of the front end, i found a ton of oil in the intercooler and ic piping, which typically means blown turbo seals. i did a ton of research to figure out which size oil restricter was the correct one for the t28 when i swapped to it so i'm a bit baffled there... that seems to suggest that the valve stem seals are "ok," but i already went ahead and ordered a set of replacements just in case.

a familiar sight... looking forward to giving the bay some tidying up and a fresh coat of paint. standing there looking at the front end was driving me crazy though. it looks crooked as hell and the body panels fit like shit, but i measured everything and it all seems square. even this picture makes it look tweaked. i really need to get it on a frame rack one of these days haha
https://i.imgur.com/tkMGtEy.jpg

look at how caked with oil this thing is. only put like mayyyybeeee 2000 miles on it since the last time it was out of the car and clean. we're planning on hopefully street driving our cars (dom, nick, aaron, and i) out to final bout gallery, so despite there possibly not being any internal issues with the motor, i'd like to reseal everything and just make sure everything is in spec before setting off on the 5000 mile round trip.

so... i've been busy raping and pillaging the coupe. i'm trying to get the hatch up to par for some shenanigans while the coupe is down so i can get cracking on the k24 swap finally.

https://i.imgur.com/B2S9DrK.jpg

i spent last friday and saturday putting the entire front suspension from the coupe plus new coils and a modded crossmember and then figuring out the e-fan setup as well as a few other odds and ends. all seemed well until i got to the track and found serious bogging issues. checked all the common issues, but it didn't seem to be anything i could solve at the track... and my friend let me drive his s14 so i wasn't too focused on getting the hatch working.

today i attempted to diagnose the issue. spark plugs suggested it was running lean. fuel filter was fine, pump was fine, fuel was old. didn't get around to draining the fuel because i got distracted doing ricer shit like mocking up aero and wheels

https://i.imgur.com/VcDUXb1.jpg?1

i'd like to thrown the sr in it, but man the ka setup is so clean. probably won't mess with it if i can get it sorted.

^thanks! hopefully it'll come out good haha

slowly been making progress. what should have taken maybe a day has taken a month. keep getting one step forward and two steps back.

i went to put the turbo/mani (guess you don't have to "hold the a" now) on and found the turbo was hitting the motor mount. hammered the heat shield but it wasn't quite enough. there are xcessive motor mount brackets on this thing, which make the motor sit lower. i didn't think it'd be this much... so i unbolted one bracket and jacked the motor up enough to get the turbo on only to find out the compressor housing was sitting on the motor mount when i let it back down. i guess xcessive didn't think someone would pair their brackets with a stock motor mount or something? so i had to throw a 2mm washer between bracket and mount. removing the turbo and manifold still requires me to jack up the motor, which is annoying. i should probably just switch to stock brackets, but for the time being, it's fine.
https://i.imgur.com/ICAD3xk.jpg

then it was onto the coolant feed/return for the turbo. my original plan for the turbo coolant lines didn't work because i found the previous owner had already deleted a bunch of coolant ports off the intake manifold and throttle body. so i ended up just using my heater lines. for the oil feed, i used the z1 kit, but my buddy who was helping me out ended up snapping the tee off in the oil block so i had to order a replacement. for the return i somehow managed to lose the damn $19 earls 90° bung to 1/2" npt for the pan so a replacement for that has been ordered as well. total and utter incompetence goin on in here lol
https://i.imgur.com/CIDxqcU.jpg

the good news is it passed smog, my friend who has done my paint previously has agreed to do all of the bodywork this time around, and another friend is going to tackle wiring up the ac and cruise control, which takes a huge pile of shit off my plate. so now all i have to worry about is getting it running and driving... over the next 5 weekends :ughd:

my friend laid base and clear. we changed our paint booth setup and my car got to be the guinea pig, which resulted in a bit of dust in the clear, but we should be able to get rid of it pretty easily.

https://i.imgur.com/V68AI5c.jpg

i pulled it outside after setting the ride height and checked pan clearance... which was not great...

https://i.imgur.com/UxJrq9R.jpg

took it to get aligned at “track height”. the plan was to mark everything, then raise the car, set “trip height” and then mark everything again, in a different color so it’d be easy to change real quick, but we ran out of time.

https://i.imgur.com/JhOeQAj.jpg

i got the ssr faces powder coated matte black to kinda match my 57dr’s

https://i.imgur.com/BNxPRWT.jpg

finished up wiring and plumbing EVERYTHING, except i keep forgetting to grab a tiny filter for the catch can breather

https://i.imgur.com/NCr1IA1.jpg

and then busted ass friday night/saturday morning mounting everything. i hadn’t even mocked up the new front fenders or any aero before paint so i was fearing for the worst, but somehow just about everything fit with little to no modification. and then at like 3am i found that the front professors wouldn’t clear the damn bbk. would have required roughly a 28mm spacer to clear the caliper and the studs, which my fenders could not accommodate.

https://i.imgur.com/S95hlDk.jpg

fortunately autozone had some stock size z32 rotors in stock so i removed the bbk and everything fit perfectly!

took it out for a rip up and down the street and my buddy snapped some photos of it real quick.

https://i.imgur.com/0GCqBoU.jpg

and then i pulled back into the shop and noticed the volt gauge was reading low and steadily decreasing and THEN noticed oil on the ground. jacked the car up and sure enough it looked like a pencil had pierced the front of the pan (sorry for the terrible pic, but you get the idea)

https://i.imgur.com/GzUq9Rs.jpg

also realized coolant was leaking from the water neck on the intake manifold AND the steel sleeve that the -an fitting connects to was spinning.

with all of those factors plus the added expense to replace the fucked up shit and the likelihood of us hitting snow on our drive to final bout, i decided to throw in the towel. i am exhausted and so is my wallet. i’d rather be able to drive some local events this year than be in debt and only be able to drive one, though it is the coolest one...

anyway, i had to roll the car outside today so my buddy could pull his car out of the shop and got to see it in the sun for the first time. i am in love.

and now i’m gonna take a fuckin nap before getting on the road to accompany my equally as insane team mate hahaha

just a little off topic for a second...

after giving up on the hatch, i focused on helping my team mate at least get his z32 ready for the trip to final bout on time. three of us worked on it from 10am to 3am the next morning and then hopped right on the road. it was insanity. i ended up driving 1/4 of the trip in his car for him so he could nap in the support rig. 3 of us and 2 vehicles managed to do the drive out in under 48 hours despite each car getting pulled over once and severe weather. the drive back was just under 36 hours despite severe weather and the car literally falling apart hahaha

https://i.imgur.com/QdGVEO7.jpg

it was a good trip though. in hindsight, there was no fucking way my car would have survived the trip without some sort of catastrophic failure so in the end i'm somewhat glad everything went wrong at the last minute.

finally got around to fixing the hatch... kinda...

i decided to go with an oem pan just to make things simple... and then realized the xcessive pan had the brace incorporated into the upper pan, meaning the transmission, clutch, and flywheel needed to be removed just to get to the back two bolts.

https://i.imgur.com/jLR8cV4.jpg

i threw in the towel and tagged in my buddy (with the z32) and had him do it lol ended up giving him the green light to whack the brace off the pan and he popped that shit right off. while he was at it, i also had him replace the xcessive motor mount brackets with some oem units, which shifted the motor to the left and up about 3/4", paired with the oe pan, it all sits about 2" higher than before, high above the crossmember and swaybar :)

https://i.imgur.com/9jFTtXf.jpg

a side effect of raising the motor though, is now the rad hose and fmic piping setup is all fucked up. gotta rebuild the hoses to be about 1/2" longer and either have a custom coldpipe built or try to squeeze a 45° coupler in there. AND gotta figure out what's going on with my altenator, but aside from that it's good to go. took it out for a little rip up and down the street. slow, but feels solid.

busted ass this week to get the car ready for an event this weekend. i replaced the thermostat housing and chopped off the -an fitting from the upper water neck (and re-sealed it with green locktite) so i could switch to a koyorad, oe shroud, and gk clutch fan. turned the car on and there was a weird noise. thought it was the alt for some reason, but eventually found the vacuum cap for the brake booster was split and causing a crazy whistle noise. i had to frankenstein the cold side intercooler piping to clear the new rad hose and then bled the cooling system. i couldn't manage to get it to go any higher than 174°f even with cardboard in front of the rad. the thermostat is supposed to open at 170° so i figured it'd be good to go.

ran out of time to wash the car and couldn't find anywhere to rinse it off at the track :wtc:

https://i.imgur.com/aUJz6uy.jpg

i was the first one on the track. i spun out twice, forgetting how bad the front rubs without tubs hahaha

temps looked good and the car was running great so i went out for a couple more runs with the run up dudes. made me notice how quick the hatch is. seriously feels just as fast as the coupe, if not faster, granted the hatch was on 235 rsr's instead of 225 kr20's.

i went to go back out and the car wouldn't start. after looking around the engine bay and checking fuses, i realized i clutch kicked so hard i broke the little plastic bushing thing that hits the clutch safety switch. started the car and started driving, but my water temp started shooting up super quickly. i shut the car down and noticed the thermostat housing was leaking.

https://i.imgur.com/m08Y7W5.jpg

i waited for the car to cool down and checked the coolant level and it seemed to be fine. turned it back on and the temps stabilized around 198°. as soon as i started driving the temps started climbing slowly and then shot up to 260° out of nowhere! the stock temp gauge stayed at below the halfway mark this entire time btw. no idea wtf was going on. i'm guessing a big ass bubble in the cooling system?

let the car cool down again so i could move it back to the pits and attempt to bleed it again. when i started it, a weird noise started coming from the front of the head. sounded like timing chain rattle at first, but then got super sporadic, like something metallic was bouncing around in there.

popped the oil cap off and looked in the valve cover, but couldn't see anything. i decided to err on the side of caution and called it a day. hopefully it isn't anything serious. sick of this shit

May the car gods bless your KA with a quick and easy recovery!

thanks!

i went and took a look at it this weekend. let the car idle for a bit to chase down the location of the sound. really seemed to be coming from the front cover/head area. pulled the valve cover and the chain guides looked brand new, as well as the head (not a spec of sludge or carbon buildup in sight). looked around and couldn't find any metal shavings or loose nut or bolt anywhere so i put the valve cover back on. figured the next logical source was the water pump, which would also explain the overheating issue. pulled the belt and started up and sure enough the sound went away. the water pump looks brand new so i'm not sure why or how it went bad, but it seems like the impeller possibly may have fallen off, which would be extra strange... guess i'll find out next weekend when i get to pull apart the cooling system for the 6,000th time

i pulled the water pump off yesterday and it looked totally fine. went ahead and replaced it with a new oem one anyway. also installed a swirl pot to avoid any future bleeding issues. conveniently the fittings supplied in the pbm kit are the same size as the accessory port in the koyorad and then just drilled and tapped the upper water neck.

whelp, i finally drove it on the street for real from the track to the hotel and back twice (about 10 min each way) and everything seemed to be in working order. solid temps, motor running perfect, boost stable up to 7psi, afr looking perfect...

https://i.imgur.com/yPGUyZX.jpg

got about 4 runs in and then it started cutting fuel at/near wot. checked the fuel filter, maf, tps, changed the fpr vacuum source, nothing changed. i could do one run and it would work fine, but the second run, it would sporadically cut fuel.

https://i.imgur.com/MK5gl8p.jpg

one of the rear tires started leaking randomly when i got home. so i finally put these 18's on for the first time. sbc is such an amazing color :wiggle: sparked a little motivation to fix the car

https://i.imgur.com/7Ca3EFw.jpg

another 2 weeks until the next event (that my team and run up are hosting) to figure out wtf is going on with this heap of shit. sure would be nice to get a full event in before the end of the year :bowrofl:

Similar thing happened to my buddy. his issue ended up being a rusted out gas tank. Rust would clog the fuel sock causing starvation but when the car sat for 10 minutes it would be fine again

^i checked the gas tank and it's clean.

i thought i got the car working right before our event because i couldn't get to recreate the same issue on the street, but of course 2nd run at the track it did the same shit again. i brought a known working maf and distributor to the track and nothing changed. checked everything i could think of, but still couldn't figure it out event with the help of two ka-t wizards. there are a few more things i can try but god damn is it frustrating.

so i attempted to drive another event at the end of november, but didn't even make it to the track this time :ddog: the car made the 1.5hr drive home from the shop with no issues other than some drivetrain noise and an intermittent vibration. about 45 min into the drive to the track, the vibration began to increase. felt like a wheel was going to fuckin fly off. checked the lugs and bearings and did a quick bolt check (as good as i could on the side of an offramp). said fuck it and hopped back on the freeway and the trans wouldn't shift to 4th smoothly and only made it another 15 minutes before the vibration became unbearable. found a hotel and a friend with a trailer to rescue me in the morning. the next day when i moved the car, the ground was COVERED in oil and the drivetrain was SCREAMING when the clutch was engaged. i parked the car at the shop and didn't touch till this week.

next on the list was giving the gas tank a really good cleaning. there was an insane amount of particulate in that bitch. i couldn't tell just how bad it was where there was gas in it. once it was empty and dry, it looked like a damn beach in there. one good vacuum and a can of brake clean later it was nearly good as new.
https://i.imgur.com/Hhhja8L.jpg

got the car back together and took it for a drive. it did great on the little 20 minute drive until on the way back about a block away from the shop i heard something metal fall off the car. there was a bunch of traffic, so i didn't stop. when i got to the shop, i jacked the car up to figure out what it was, and one of the subframe retainer/brackets had fallen off. my friend was nice enough to stop and pick it up off the roadway for me, but not before it had been run over by a car or two.
https://i.imgur.com/p4a5PWS.jpg

a few whacks with the hammer and it was good as new
https://i.imgur.com/Z8qhpb2.jpg

went to put it back on, but couldn't get it to bolt up for the life of me. the subframe bushings were just way too fuckin tall to get it threaded on. after doing some research, apparently z32 energy suspension bushings are different than s14 energy suspension bushings, even though every other manufacturer in the world seems to use the same bushing for z32/c33/s13/r32/etc, which apparently means the bushing is taller. rather than fuck around and whack them to be shorter with a sawzall, i ordered some new delrin bushings from Dayton One to give a shot. threw in some new z33 axles while i was at it. (these GSP axles from rock auto come with the goood boots too)
https://i.imgur.com/ugEU3GD.jpg

i did full riser in the rear with one shim in the front for a little more traction and boy did it change my suspension geometry. the car couldn't even go all the way down because the tire was binding so hard on the qp. luckily i had a 3mm spacer on, which when removed, along with about a degree of negative camber, was just enough to clear without major rubbing.

i got tired of my faded blue seats, so i sprayed them with some interior paint. the left here is already painted, right is not.
https://i.imgur.com/cwVAHqn.jpg

after a few coats, the right got much darker. the left one is far more worn and fabric is somewhat polished, which is why it looks dirty/patchy. they look like shit here tbh, but in the car they look a lot better!

Not really much media for this post, so here's a pretty picture to start it off before a wall of text.

https://i.imgur.com/juKrESM.jpg

I finally got the car to the track. I was hoping to get a shakedown session in before doing full track on Thunderhill East at Super D, but due to Covid, the heat, and all the local street spots being a bust, I didn't get a chance. Literally 5 minutes into the track being hot, it was black flagged due to someone leaking oil all over it. Fortunately Super D had the small skidpad rented out too so I got a chance to get a quick shakedown in. The car felt amazing temps and psi's looked great, but in such a small area it was difficult to keep my eye on the gauges under WOT.

Once I hopped on track, I did a couple grip laps. I was surprised how many blind and off-camber turns there were. Once I got a chance to go WOT I noticed the AFR would periodically shoot off the gauge, but would drop back to safe range after a second. So I let'er rip and holy fuck did it feel good. Legit the best driving car I've ever driven. So much turn-in, yet manageable and grippy and fast. For the first couple of laps I just left it in third gear and everything worked great, aside from me initiating everything a bit too early and using far too much e-brake.

I took a break and then went back over to the skidpad and did a few laps with Dom and Nic. The flat spots from sitting on the e-brake were so bad I though I had broken my car :keke: I've never used the e-brake that hard before. After the runs, I noticed the AFR was sticking at 18+ for a lot longer than it had been in the morning, but it was still running fine, not stumbling or acting like it was leaning out. Nic suggested the wideband sensor may be bad as he's had similar issues in the past, so I swapped out the wheels and hopped back on the track and started really ripping it.

The first lap out I chucked it into turn 2 in 4th and went to downshift to 3rd and it wouldn't go in gear. Drifted turn 3-5 in 3rd and dropped to 2nd for turn 6 and tried to upshift to 3rd and it wouldn't budge again. I tried entering turn 10 in 4th and dropping to 3rd and of course it wouldn't go even with me slamming it with the force of Bruce Banner. 3rd gear synchro DED. So I just did everything in 3rd again, dropping to 2nd and revving out at turn 6. Not quite as exhilarating. Then I decided to give turn 1 a go. Ripped it mid-way through 4th gear and initiated the feint crossing the start/finish line at about 95mph and clutch kicked the shit out of it until it wouldn't stay sideways anymore haha I gripped the rest of the lap in an attempt to catch up to Dom, which was fun. Not sure how, but this dumb slammed car handles amazingly well. Super curious about what kind of lap times it'd put down if I really pushed it. Anyways, of course as I caught up to Dom, he pulled into the pits, so I ripped it as hard as I could down the front straight and I noticed the AFR weren't returning to safe levels what so ever so after giving turn 1 another go, I cruised the rest of the way around the track and into the pits. AFR stayed off the gauge the entire time.

When I pulled into the pits I got a big waft of fuel and saw fluid pouring out of the bottom of the car so I jacked the car up with the quickness and grabbed a fire extinguisher just in case. Fortunately it was on the cold side and it was actually just coolant leaking out of one of the swirl pot lines. Sure did get my heart going for a second!

I couldn't identify where the fuel smell was coming from, but my guess is there's something funky going on with the hard lines, whether it be a pinch, pinhole puncture, blockage, or shitty fitting. At this point, I've replaced just about every other component in the fuel system. Also hoping the wideband sensor is just bad otherwise some pistons might not be very happy with me :hs:

I forget why, but I popped the hatch and found the battery tie-down had snapped and the battery was just chillin on its side in the spare tire well. Thank fuck it's dry cell and didn't leak acid everywhere. Curious as to just how long it had been flying around. I don't recall hearing anything flying around back there, but I did have a couple hard off-track excursions earlier in the day.

At that point I decided to call it and pack up the car. It was already 2pm and 100?+ out. Gave me a chance to watch they other doods boogie down the front straight and huck it into turn 1, which was very exciting to say the least. I don't care what anyone says, 100+mph entries are always cool regardless of linking it to another turn or not.

In the end, it was a slightly frustrating day, but I still had a ton of fun out there. Thank fuck this car handles as well as it does or else it'd be part-out city with all the head and heart aches this thing has caused me. Julian just announced they're going to do East at the end of the year again so at least I'll have a chance at redemption.

Also, quick side note, Federal Evolution ST-1 feel fucking great. 10/10 bang-for-the-buck tire and they come in 225/35r18, which is what I was running up front with 225/40 ST-1 in the rear. Extremely balanced.

For PS I was thinking electric pump. Hadn't put any thought into AC yet though. At this rate, I'm sure someone will have done it by the time I get around to it haha

So, I've been meaning to build a splitter for the DLux for forever and finally got around to doing it. My local Tap Plastic store only had 1/4" thin ABS in stock so I decided to just do a simple bumper-mounted splitter for now (it's way too floppy to use the chassis-mount setup I had on the coupe).

https://i.imgur.com/Mf6zktZ.jpg

Marked it and cut it with a jigsaw. You want a blade that's got 10 teeth per inch. The blade I used was actually for wood and cut just fine.

https://i.imgur.com/aIDvpp4.jpg

It melted back together in a few spots, but it was nothing a dremmil couldn't fix. Did a super lazy inner trace just to make sure I didn't cut it out too thin.

https://i.imgur.com/D0sSA8b.jpg

Threw a few bolts with some LARGE washers in it and ta-da!

https://i.imgur.com/xxTn8bj.jpg

So back to this lean issue. I pulled the plugs the other day and they all looked perfect. Slightly rich if anything. Bought a new sensor and the AFR is on the money. So, I actually drove a car to a meet for the first time in over 2 years last night.

https://i.imgur.com/b3rGxJi.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/p0letWR.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/ATjgyCS.jpg

I was surprised how nicely it drove, though the coolant temps started climbing over 200?F when I'd do pulls or come to a stop, which is odd. It never typically gets over 160? even when it's over 100? outside. So that's today's project

So 1/4" ABS is too thin? I'm likely going to switch from my dorkidori poly aero bumper to a fiberglass bumper I picked up this winter, and I'd like to do something similar to hopefully help save it when it touches the ground.

Just too thin for my chassis-mount setup. If I added some pickup points near the edges it might be ok though. 3/8? would work much better for that setup though. For a bumper-mounted splitter, 1/4? is fine though.
