Hi all, been a member of the forum for a little while now but have barely been active on the forum. As I've been building up a SR20VET for my S15 as you'll see below you in the information/pictures, I thought it was about time I start my own build topic seeing as I haven't yet!

Hope you enjoy :)

What blue is that?

Have the trans bolted up? You could see some issues when you do with that P12 CAS. I had to remove mine in my S14 and go with the Mazworx pickup because I didn't have room between the CAS and bulkhead.

Ooooh...looks like you forgot to notch the transmission tunnel. You're probably gonna have to beat the tunnel out to make space for the RB25 transmission.

Lockiess15
08-17-2013, 04:58 PM
They've already smashed the tunnel out a little bit according to them to allow the gearbox to fit before it had been painted. As for the CAS, I'm not sure on the whole thing but they've told me they're not running it. I believe they're putting a hall effect system on it or something but whatever they do I've told it won't have a CAS on it...

It's the standard S15 blue, just been painted again as pictures show. It's not as dark in person as you see in the pictures. It's a little bit brighter when you actually see it as the pictures are taken at night time

Thanks man. They're definitely better motors to build from then an sr20det and the best thing going with these is that you're not adding extra weight that an RB/JZ/V8 would :)

What is that giant box on the right with the lines coming out of it? It seems that you would have more room if you could remove it or at least relocate it. Is it for ABS brakes or something?

That is the ABS controller.

Lockiess15

As mentioned, it's the ABS unit :). It's why I couldn't go with a 60mm wastegate and had to end up using a 44mm instead >_<

Smaller wastegates control exhaust gases better. 60mm would've been completely overkill for the turbo you are running.

Lockiess15
09-02-2013, 06:48 PM
They thought it might boost creep just a tiny bit which is why they were going to run a 60mm to start with it, but that's a might. Downpipe is going to be heat wrapped and so goes for any rubber hoses that's next to anything hot. They're also either heat wrapping the abs or putting a heat shield around it.

Head is out of a P11 Primera and the block is just the S15 sr20det block

Custom cams. I believe the relocation block is a mazworx item and then how they've bolted the solenoids on the side there is completely custom

Are you running VE/VET pistons in your bottom end? If not, you do know that you cannot run anything more than P11 cams on the factory DET pistons right? The VE pistons(factory and aftermarket) have valve reliefs in them and the CP's for the DET's do not, limiting you to the lower lift/duration of the first gen heads. I'd hate to see you tap a valve.

I'm not the engine builder but they've built these motors several times now and this is the first I've heard of that one. Cams that are in the head are the ones listed in the spec sheet. I've only got the one photo of that sorry.

Photo of exhaust/wastegate piping now finished too

Were there any significant difficulties bolting a P11 head to the block?

Lockiess15
09-05-2013, 01:36 AM
I'm not from Wellington :D. Buying the kit and everything else you need is the easy/cheap part, it's bolting the bugger and making it all work is the hard/expensive part but I've left that all up to Shred to do. I won't know details on machining work they've done to make it work until I have all the reciepts

And popping this here :)

Lack of sales or something?

Yes. I believe there were less than 10k S14a's sold between 97-98. 95 models sold the most with slightly over 25k then it fell off hard. Had we gotten the turbo model, I believe those numbers would've been drastically different throughout all years. However, we were stuck with a "truck" motor.

Aren't they suppose to have better potential then SR20DET's though? Here we don't really see people building them so I don't know a heck of a lot about them.

And yeah, the first idea was just to have a forged block, 272 cams and have it tuned with a big laggy GTX35. Then when I was asking around places I eventually got speaking to Aaron at Shred Motorsport and he started talking to me about the SR20VE's which at the time I knew nothing to very little about. Then well...the rest has turned in to this build from that moment on :D

jr_ss
09-10-2013, 07:56 AM
He may be running a P12 solenoid, which activates both intake and exhaust cams at the same time. He also is lacking the bleed back line, which from my understanding isn't really needed, because the oil pressure can bleed off through the rockers, it'll just take a sec or two longer for his high lobes to deactivate. So, with all that said he doesn't need 3 lines.

rbs14kouki
09-10-2013, 09:22 AM
Ahhhh ... now that your talking about that ! i remember reading about that bleed line not needed!

Lockiess15
09-10-2013, 11:49 PM
Exhaust also doesn't have the VVL lobes either. I still don't fully understand why, but yeah it was brought that way and I haven't been told it's a bad thing

rbs14kouki
09-11-2013, 04:42 AM
Now its starting to make sence .... you have a vet head and not a ve

The vet comes without the exhaust vvl . If you wana convert your exhaust side you need to buy : P11 Primera exhaust rocker arms and a set of cams of your choice !

rbs14kouki
09-11-2013, 04:43 AM
Kemp (SRT8E180) did the same on is 180sx !

Vet head , p12 cams , P11 Primera exhaust rocker arms , and the list goea on !!!!

Lockiess15
09-11-2013, 11:47 PM
It's a P11 VE head with custom camshafts with VVL delete on the exhaust camshaft. That's according to both Shred Motorsport [who are building the motor] and E&H Motorsport [where I purchased the head from]

Just a heads up Locki, if those lines in your trunk aren't PTFE(Teflon) lined, they are going to permeate fuel smell throughout the car. I found that out with my blue fuel hose and have bought everything needed to convert mine over to PTFE lines. It's a PITA but I don't want to smell fuel the entire time driving.

Old [left] vs new [right] oil cooler fittings. Huge difference in not just the shape but also how much better the oil will be flowing through the new ones in comparison

Two questions.

Why does your fuel rail have three fittings on it? its the middle one feed and the other two are returns?

Also, what is that, down by the inter-cooler, holding the oil lines? could you post where you bought it, looks really handy to keep the lines really clean...

Sweet ride by the way, cant wait too see this beautiful machine back together and running!

-Kyle

However it's not complete as I pulled the car out, what's left to do:

Catch tank, tune, replace brake pads, skim rotors, brake bleed, bolt radiator shroud back in, connect a/c hoses back in, buy and fit suspension pieces, widen rear guards, buy and fit new wide tires followed lastly with a paint job. And THEN finally get her road going.

I'll get a video of it running once I can borrow my friends camera. I'm broke atm and also need to fill it up with some more coolant so have to wait on that too

cbcm2435

speedingmofa
06-10-2014, 04:41 PM
How come you barely have any torque till 4000rpm? Isn't the VVL system supposed to give u loads of low end torque as well?

After 4000rpm, power comes on brutally though!

Lockiess15
06-11-2014, 12:31 AM
It's on 98 octane. I think with the torque it has something to do with there not being any VVL on the exhaust side as well as the cams being quite advanced rather then retarded? I'm no expert but I've been told if I retard the timing more it'll help bring up the torque and spool more down low but I'll lose it up higher

jr_ss
06-12-2014, 08:09 AM
Can you post a better picture of the dyno graph? You cut off the power curve. Interested to see, as I have the same turbo but VVL on both lobes. I'm hoping for 500 on pump, more on race.

Well this has been a long ass time from any last updates, it's still not much but it's something. Got my BC Golds in and mounted gear lever surrounds [no more giant hole!]. Have almost got $$ for the rest of my suspension bits and pieces so shouldn't be too far away with next update long as I get off my ass and install them right away lol

Oh they better be as bloody good as I'm thinking they are, sure costed me enough! I'd also never just "stop" with the build, far too in to it to do so. Once that's all done there'll be another gap where I've stopped for a while as panel&paint is next

Mine have been going on 10 years now. Besides surface scuffs from removal and install a bunch, they're still perfect.

You won't be disappointed with them.

That's good news then. In NZ we have to have a certification plate for a number of vehicle modifications to state that it's modified in a safe manner. With things like that if you try cheap out [E.G purchase knock off items], you'll find yourself not being able to get a certification as majority of the knock off items aren't safe enough to use

Was a productive day for being so hungover today. Front is all in and finished, while the rear is tomorrows mission. While I was at it I polished up the front mount and piping as they had become filthy from sitting around

They're an expensive conversion but the gains you achieve even on a stock VE head is far greater then a DET head can ever hope to match.

Anyway today finished up with installing the rear and had camber set to as positive as possible from the eye. Just now needing a proper wheel alignment in future when I get around to doing so

Good evening folks, well as it's probably quite obvious I don't get on the internet much anymore (don't own my own PC, currently using my brothers laptop to even write this) and the other fact is I haven't had anything to update on...until now

Recently got my S15 in to the panel shop finally, went in yesterday to check up on and progress and to my delight saw they've been getting in to it. What you see here is inner wheel arches on both sides are now raised 40mm, and both rear guards are pulled 20-25mm outwards. There's still around a further 4mm to go yet but regards to the panel work involved, the guard work side is mostly done which is the biggest job.

Enough of my ranting, it's photo time!

Wow, this is amazing!

I love the VVL conversion, it looks like a factory-fit job too. I like the fact you're keeping the standard rear arches too, best way on S15s imo!

What skirts are those? What else do you have planned for the exterior other than paint refresh?

Lockiess15
11-13-2015, 09:26 PM
Skirts are Orgin Labo, front bumper is Vertex and factory rear bumper but I've got custom end caps to go on yet

Other then guards and kit, I've got a Dmax boot spoiler to go on, getting it de badged (keeping the Spec R badges) and having both the boot lock and ariel shaven off, some holes in the engine bay filled and part of the sills straightened back [one end is just slightly bent obviously from a jack]

@tricky ab: It's been a VERY long time since I've been able to have an update, I lost a lot of motivation just seeing it sitting but thankfully I've got progress to share once again

The power and the spool looks pretty nice though... Full boost by 4500 is better than others...

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm in the middle of research and feedback for my setup.. Looking at the different turbine options for the gtx3076r and the results of those running em.

UPDATE:

Purchased a pair of 60mm gauges as a late Christmas gift to the S15. Oil pressure and fuel/air ratio, should help to monitor things

S15's also been coming along at the panel shop, guards both sides are now widened to compensate for my 265's

Windows are booked to be removed on Tuesday in preparation for a full exterior respray and kit along with boot lock and aeral shave is under way.

Kit should be on by Thursday/Friday next week.

No big update just yet, but all the interior is back in and all of the exterior minus front bumper, FMIC and IC piping are on

Spent the weekend cleaning out ten months of dust in my engine bay and re polished the FMIC, intake manifold and my IC piping ready to go on

Car was being buffed when I checked on it earlier today

Engine porn anyone? Well my rear molds aren't arriving from Japan for a further two weeks so now I may as well save some extra cash to get my 60mm gauges fitted in while it's at the electricians. Had them mounted in last night, ready to be wired ,

Good to see another top notch VE build in NZ, there's definitely a few here now.Shit I never even saw this, have you got a SR20VET build in NZ on the go yourself?

With the car since it's been a while now, I thought I'd let everyone know that yes the car is still an on going project, it's not legal just yet and I'm still waiting on those overnight parts from Japan to show up

I've just been wanting to tidy her up a little bit so ordered brand new OEM front inner plastics, brand new OEM steering wheel, Z Racing spiked steel wheel nuts and just replaced my front door cards with mint condition items just yesterday

Goes to show that a car can be at a practical ride height and still look good.

Keep it up!

Any reason you aren't running that vented port on the catch can to the fitting on the turbo intake tube?

Small particles of oil vapour was being drawn in as I've got no PCV

A PCV wouldn't stop oil vapor from being inhaled. The PCV stops boost from entering and pressurizing the crankcase.

Been a while since I last updated, as of last week the car became 100% legal which I drove down country (a two hour drive) to my tuner for a road tune. Road tune was thankfully a success and been driving the car hard for the last couple of nights now, 2nd at a roll will powerslide to the left a bit but 3rd and onwards foot flat just grips dead straight on me. There is a issue that my starter when hot just doesn't quite get enough voltage to start though so when money is available I just have to take it in and get bigger wires hooked up

Sure do, I'm at the opposite end of the country though. Here's my build http://zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=631187

Looking forward to seeing what numbers she puts out on the dyno. I assume you're wraithdeath on youtube? I recognised the engine bay.

Been a while now that I last updated

End of last year I brought a set of genuine 52mm AEM gauges in boost, oil pressure and air/fuel ratio that I was going to have installed but end of 2016 and beginning of this year has seen its share of teething issues I've had with the car

Starting from a cracked front bumper and a cracked boot spoiler, to a couple of new oil leaks, a problem with my CAS hitting the firewall etc but it's all since fixed as of around a month and a half to two months ago

Ended up entering a big New Zealand car show called 4&Rotary where I took out best power output in the Tough Street class with a few shots of the car here

I'm hoping to change things up with the engine in a years time with what I've been saving so far unless plans change and I wind up spending the money on more "important things"

Not much has changed with the car but finally purchased a set of genuine wheels being Work Emotion D9R's, and got around to getting my set of AEM digital display gauges in my air vents. Entering its first track event start of next month*
