View Full Version : How fast is fast enough ??

This is a topic that has, well riddled me for quite sometime. I want to have a discussion about it because this is something that I want to see addressed. It may get a little deep....

Okay here I go....

It doesn't matter how fast the car is or how well it can handle because in the end it all comes down the human with in. Think about this how many people can handle a 2,000HP car around a twisty track and actually use it to it's fullest capabilities? Sure you can race 7,000HP-drag car in a straight line but can you actually race it? Or hold a race around the track at speeds close to the sound barrier? As cars get faster will people keep up with it? What I'm getting at is that people haven't caught up to the speed. Humans haven't evolved the reflexes to cope with the speed. The engineers can make it but can we drive it? The biggest set back in our day is no one else but us.

If we can't do it them who will? There is one answer to that the "MACHINE" it self. With us out of the way faster and better cars can be made. Can we as red-blooded humans allow that to happen? To let a lifeless machine to take all the credit of achieving New World records in speed.

Letting a machine do all the work doesn't seem right. What can the speed freak do? What can we do to close the gap between car and driver. Could it be that our current methods of communicating to our cars be outdated? Is there a better way other then steering wheels and pedals?

In the end this is not something that the current generations of speed freaks have to worry about too much. This is something that our grandkids will have to deal with. For an answer to all these questions look ahead to the future....

Okay let me get back to the real world.
So what you all think? Is this something we have to look at? I know most of us are struggling to get to 200HP (I know I am). But I wanted to play with the "IDEA". We can't be tied down to the real world all the time. If anyone got anything to add, post here. I want discuss this in an orderly matter.

this sounds like a automobile version of a fear factory cd. i sure hope some company doesn't design a computer programmed car to do the work of a driver, making precise calculations on how much to use the gas and clutch, the amount of traction it has, and a sensor that waits for the lights to turn green with a perfect reaction every time. i think in the future, it would be something to worry about.

What is "fear factory cd"?

Plug the car to the brain. That oughtta close the gap between car and driver.

its like this.... when you play a video game, lets say grand turismo 2 (im not making this up) and you are driving a car at 270 mph.... you ever wonder how you can handle it? how someone can race cars at 170 - 220 on a twisty track? well you slowly get up to that speed (you make your car faster and faster) and you get use to it because your mind slows it down... your brain really slows the information down for you to do it. then you get use to it... and you can then go faster... and faster...

anyone else saw that on TLC?

uh, dunno don't care. Faster than my sister's WRX is all I want. When things get that fast, I'll probably have been long dead. So, I have nothing to discuss

yeah thats what i thought too...like i was telling my friends...#### all these drag cars wants to go faster...what gonna happens when they 0.678 in the 1/4 miles...yeah i know it's still eons in the future for that to happen but still whats next....- 8 sec in the 1/4 miles...hehehe....

hmmm.....i wonder how those #### pilots fly those f-15's? okay, so it's not the best analogy, but oh well.

There are a couple of fighter planes out there that use fly-by-wire technology. I know the stealth bomber uses it because that plane really isnt even capable of flight by conventional means, it would drop like a rock. I suppose that could be converted over, prolly will be eventually, into an automobile.
Think back to the '50s when everything was carburated <--this forum needs a spell checker no electronics except ignition... they probably thought the new technologies coming out would ruin driving too, but it didnt.

I agree though with alot of you though, the less computer controlled things like braking, steering and all, the better, #### I dont even like cruise control. I like the way most modern sports cars can turn off alot of that stuff so when you want to drive them like a beast you can.

Well it seems that allot of you think this something that we don't have to worry about, matic 240sx, benns13 and misnomer . I like to see the looks on you're faces when things starts coming true in a decade. Even in our modern day we have computers baby sitting us. Here is a few examples the M5, the "American Sports car the Z06" and that arcade machine the NISSAN GTR 34. Take a look at some of our cars Hicas and VLSD. How could you say that we don't have to worry about it at all?

I like what danio said. That seems like the best solution. To connect the car and the driver. To make turning seamless more like moving you're arms.

Let me leave you guys with this thought. What happens when you do hit a negative 1/4? Does that mean that you broke the light barrier? Will time go backwards?

Oops got carried away.... Anyway still think we are far from I'm getting at? At least mrace240sx agrees with me.
