Two questions you should answer first
1-what year is your car?
2-do you need to turn it off for smog check reasons?

juss disconnect the wire from the light lol...it's probably the o2 sensor..but usually happens to older 240's...89-93...but you can check it out..could be many things..does it go on and off sometimes?

Ok you've lucked out since the car is not OBDII. The light has to be operational for your smog inspection(it has to illuminate and turn off when you start the car) so DO NOT disconnect the light. Disconnect your battery terminals overnight just to be sure all the electricity leave the ECU cause they hold memory for a while. Then when you reconnect it the light should be off. You'd just better hope the light doesnt turn back on before the smog check. If the light turns on right away again, you'll have to go get the problem fixed. Dont be cheap about it, your car should be taken care of. It may be a really cheap fix like the O2 sensor or something.
Another question..do you have any modifcations?

Thanks alot.
your question. it doesnt turn off and on sometimes. if thats what you meant by it.
mods? just an exhaust. thats it.
once again thanks guys.
-Thanks
(how do you guys know these stuff? trial and error?)
OK.well guess you can try the ECU thing for now. As long as you have your stock cat on the car i dont see the exhaust setting of the check engine light unless your post cat 02 sensor is missing, i'm not even sure you car is supposed to have one. Did you put the exhuast on yourself? Did you notice the light come on right after the exhaust install? or did you buy the car with the exhuast on it? and what kind of exhaust..cat back? headerback, muffler?

Yes, i installed the exhaust myself. The light was on before i put it on. When i bought the car, it wasn't on. it came on like a year ago from nowhere, just didnt bother to deal w/ it. Apex'i N1 exhaust catback.

mine was on forever ... then the day i went to get it inspected it was just gone ... was pretty amazing... lol but i also read that in obdI cars it doesn't matter if its on, only obdII at least in Texas... haven't researched it in other states.

95 Base Models ARE OBD II. One way to check what is wrong with your car is to put the ECU into diagnostic mode. Remove the passenger side kick panel below the glove box & unscrew the ECU from the car body. Turn the ECU around so you can see the RED LED along with a small slotted screw. With the key in the ON position in the ignition, turn the small slotted screw all the way to the right & back. The LED AND the Check Engine Light on the Dashboard should start to flash. Read the number of flashes & see what code corresponds to which sensor. Check the www.240sx.org website for additonal. Click on the FAQ button...when the page opens up scroll down the links till you get to Reading ECU - DOHC.
ANOTHER and EASIER way to figure out what is wrong with your car is to drive down to either Kragen or Autozone & ask them if they can check your car. I don't remember who does it for free but Kragen or Autozone will scan your car & tell you what trouble codes you are having. If they tell you Code 34 Anti-Knock Sensor...ignore it...Code 34 will not set your Check Engine Light off. I know several people who have kicked Code 34's, (myself included), and have never turned on their Check Engine Light.
Anyhow, one Kragen or Autozone checks your car for Diagnostic Trouble Codes, you'll know what to fix.
Chances are it could be:
1). Oxygen Sensor
2). Leaking Vacuum Line to the EGR valve
3). Engine Timing is off
When was the last time you serviced your car....i.e. had a tuneup done??
Check the ECU for Diagnostic Trouble Codes & see what code kicks back. Let us know & we'll tell you how to proceed from there.

95 Base Models ARE OBD II.
ALthough it is OBDII, it doesnt require an OBDII check because it is older than 1996.

Exactly....
Just do what he said about the ECU. Thats how you can do it yoruself quickly, or just go to autozone and have them hook their scanner up to your diagnostic port by the drivers side footwell in the kickpanel w/ fuses.
I have the CEL on my 95' as well, code 25 (IACV)...but it still idles ok. I am going to be pulling mine off tomorrow and checkings its resistance.
you shoudl take care of the car... just how it was passed onto you with the CEL. You never know, the car could run a LOT better after you fix it.
If you want the FSM for a 95 let me know and I can send it to you over AIM or email. That way youc an read how to do it all yoruself and what the codes mean.

95 Base Models ARE OBD II.
i thought early 95's were OBDI and later 95's were OBDII. hence the '95 up to so-and-so date' for certain parts.
anyway good luck with that... i have the same problem. i'll get around to fixing it sooner or later.

For clarification on what is OBD II compliant & not, go to the www.OBDII.com website.

My 95 SE was built in Japan in March of 94, (a buddy of mine 95 SE was built in January 94), and BOTH are OBD II compliant. Nope...that's no typo either...they were both built in 94!! I've got the VIN plates with the manufacturer date on it to prove it!!

yeah mine was also built in 94. Got my car smogged yesterday on the dyno jet. Got it weighed and everything. I had an o2 sensor problem which fixed the light and a vaccume hose problem which is still there but was re routed for the smog. Its most likely one of the two if not both. I passed but had to pay a grip since i didnt pass the first time round.= BUT
I passed with my intake, trust headers AND Hks Hiper exhaust on.MUAHAHAHAHHA

Well I have a Code 105 which is the EGRC solenoid. I was wondering how you access it since its down there. Do I have to take off the intake manifold or drop the tranny to access it? I already checked to see if voltage was getting to it and if theres continuity to the ECM. I have to get inspection this month and if its going to be a hassle I am just going to cut the check engine light and tap it onto another light (battery light or something) so it turns on and turns off afterwards.
