For everyone who has had their car repainted:
What color is it (custom mixed or a copy of an OEM), are your door jambs etc painted, any other notes about it, and how much did it cost.
I'm at the beginning stages of body work, and I'm interested to know how much you guys have spent on paint. It seems prices range from cheap to super expensive, depending on a ton of factors.

It depends if you plan on doing all the work yourself or not. I'm in the process of finishing my car. I have my '91 hatch painted nissan super black and now all I need to do is finish buffing it and put the front bumper and fenders back on. I'll have some pics of the finished product sometime next week. Anyways, I did all the work myself in my auto-body class. When I'm finished I will probably have spent around $400 for everything.

My back half was prepped prior to bringing it in, and I had the shop sand/primer the front half (bumper, fenders, hood). Paint is a factory color (Bright Red Metallic, maybe a GM color???), single stage, 3 year warranty, and they did the door jambs, underside of hood, inside of trunk, etc.

Total was about $1000 including their prep work of the front. That said, they have been real good about issues with it. I just took it back monday because the rear bumper started cracking/peeling, and to fix overspray (my intercooler got covered, and they shot over the edges of my weatherstripping). They were real cool about fixing the stuff though, so it's all good :)

I paid about $1500 for my paint job. Repainted the original color, all the trim pieces removed and covered and then put back on after painting. Stickers on door jamb and hood intact as well. Paint blended to match other non-repainted parts. All dings, dents and scratches removed and no wavy reflection on side of car... smooth. Been about 8 months and still looks like new, no chips or cracks.

I was just going to paint the front after an accident but it didn't match so had the whole car done...

Looks like new OEM finish too. :)

nothing against u guys who did your own prep and/or the whole thing, in fact, big props for taking the time and effort...

HOWEVER

he was asking about how much it would cost to just bring your ride in to a shop as-is, and how much did you pay to have what done. I'm going to need new paint within the month, and would like to know as well...

Where are the people that DIDN'T do their own prep? u know... lazy bastages like myself :D hehee

It really depends on how much prep-work the shop does, what quality paint they use, how many stages they need to paint in (single stage for a single color, 2+ stages for metal flakes, etc...)

I'd say for a basic single stage job at most quality (i.e.; not maaco) shops, plan on spending $1000-1500.

The paint job was a side job from someone my friend knew. Pretty much did it over the weekends and at night when he had spare time.

Don't mean to jack the tread but...

The paint was part of the repair cost for the car. I had just bought it a few months ago and then it was in a hit and run accident. I parked the car at the sidewalk and someone ran into it - probably with a truck - and drove off. The impact moved the car about 2 yards from where it was parked. I woke up to the alarm going off, went to take a look:

I WAS FUCKING PISSED! The insurance, if i decided to claim it, would have totalled the car but I had had it repaired for $4000 cash out of my pocket (NOT including body panels and parts). The lowest I could get from a body shop was $6000 but the guy we knew was willing to help me out. I thought about getting another car but sentimental value kept me to it and I figured I couldn't find a cleaner chuki 240SX SE coupe elsewhere.

Besides the paint and body, there was quite a bit of damage to the engine and underhood parts as well. So in total, I could have bought 2 of the same cars for the repair cost!

Let's just say I owe the credit card companies for quite a while and I hope the car lasts a LONG time...

Here it is now... pretty much brought back from the dead:

A shop that I've taken my '97 Prelude to many times to get panels repainted after being keyed quoted me about $3,000 total to completely fix up (minor dents, etc.) and repaint the car any color I want. The $3k was assuming a repaint with the OEM Honda Flamenco Black Pearl paint the car already had. Which was a black with blue and red metallic flakes. Quite a nice color, actually. :) So that would probably be at least two layers of spray and then they were going to do 2 layers of clearcoat.

My first overall paint was to fix dents, rust, get a new body kit prepped and painted and my existing rear body kit face lift. Cost 2,500 to get the car overall painted and ready to go, less than a year later I took it back to the same guy to have some scuffs and stuff repaired and to re clear the car turned out he scuffed all the clear off and re painted and cleared it, however, he messed up and painted the car torch red, a GM color for corvettes. So another over all paint only cost me another 1,000. However to fix my deer damage I just aquired on tuesday, the cost of a vertex front bumper plus 400 bucks. That includes painting my headlight cover inserts body color and refinishing the hood and blending the fenders. So I bought the car for 4,000 and will have around 4,500 in paint/prep cost alone. Not counting body parts.

Paint job was $2000 then putting the rear wide fenders was another $800. The paint job included getting the car a part, dents out, and putting the car together once painted. Also painted the trunk, door jams, and stock Silvia bumpers incase I break my fiberglass once.
