View Full Version : S14 5 speed swap ?'s

OK i have read the auto to 5spd swap FAQ and from what i am being told and comparing that to what i read it has misleading information.
I have a automatic 95 240sx with a bad engine. I have a complete ka24de and 5 spd trans,a random bracket a guy gave me he said i need for the 5spd swap, a harness, a lower harness, and a ecu, I also have The FRONT half of the driveshaft.
Now what i am trying to figure out is DO I NEED A 5 speed crossmember and do i need the back half of the driveshaft?
Also, anyone wanna recommend some basic maintenance i should do the the ka24de before i drop it in. I plan on doing front crank seal, rear main seal, V/C gasket set, and a oil pan gasket...anything else i should check?

Dear god... There are more FAQ sections out there than just the one. They all say you need the manual crossmember, why would you question it?
Remove the upper timing chain guide.

do i need a whole 5 speed D/S or is just the front half needs to be swapped? i got the front half that goes into the trans.

why remove the upper timing chain guide? i have seen inside the timing cover and zomg thats a mess of chains... :(

you do need a manual cross member. if the one the guy gave you had a "b" stamped in the center it's for 5-speed..if it has an "a" it's for auto..
also, here is a link to a thread that specifies lengths of drive shafts. measure the front portion that you have and see what you find out.

The upper timing chain guide is easily accessible and only requires removing the valve cover. It is removed because over time the chain gains slack and will eat through it, possibly causing serious engine damage. If you remove it, you no longer have to worry about hearing the chain clank or possible engine damage.
Buy a 1- piece driveshaft for your car. Specify if it has ABS or not and make sure it's for a 5spd. This will save you the headache of finding the "correct" front half and eliminate your probably bad center carrier bearing in the process.

where do you get a 1 pc D/S and how much do they cost? also how do i identify if it has abs or not? i do not see a big abs pump with any mess of hardlines so i assume it is a non abs s14.
any pics showing what cover to leave off? i thought crap/debris would get in there and tear up the chains/what not.

The upper chain guide does nothing really thats why Nissan put out a TSB on removing it. Google it for images, there are tons of info on it as well as one piece DS. Look in for sale section to see if you can find used one, new $300-400. The ABS pump will be on the passenger side of the car and will be obvious if you have it.

yeah man, doesn't seem like you're looking very hard. try a junk yard. most of the pieces necessary can be found on s13 as well (cross member included) as for the clutch pedal assembly you can rig a s13 one to fit, i've never done it, but i hear you can. as for the brake pedal, you can leave the auto one in and just cut it, i did this to mine and it worked out great

for future reference i guess, but the stamp is on the flatter side of the cross member. typically they've got gunk and grease caked on them, but once clean you should see the stamp.
ps. i hope you didn't pay anywhere near 279 for a clutch assembly. like I SAID EARLIER you could use a s13 one and put spacers on the back if you really needed. THAT could be had for about 40 bucks, at that it's worth a try i'd say.

depends on what exactly youre trying to accomplish and definitely not a question to ask on here hahaha you'll get flamed! build your car how you want it, not how any of us want it. If your learning to drift, Id tackle suspension, brake and power first. Honestly you really dont HAVE to do anything, go enjoy the car and learn, then build as you go, throwing a bunch of $$ wont do anything until you learn the in's and out's.. IMO

I know that, i am not a dummie. lol
What i am asking is when i search for coilovers it shows me like 50 different brand ones...
what brand and how good of quality would 8-900 dollars get me. It has 262k miles on it and it has all original suspension and brakes. I will also upgrade front brakes eventually but i know it needs suspension parts bad.

I know a couple people sliding on Stance and others on Ksport....it's really preferable.
And you could slide with a KA....just take care of your suspension and shit first.
As far as brakes go....if you don't want your brake bias all fucked just go Q45 fronts

I suggest you go through your entire suspension and replace all the bushings, ball joints and anything else that needs attention. I'm sure brake lines need to be attended too as well. Don't get ahead of yourself, make things reliable before you start modding them. I'm sure owning a Honda is no different.

well i wanna replace all the bushings on the whole chassis but I dont know what brand to go with because i have not had good luck with energy suspension brand bushing on any of my hondas...they deteriorate over a short amount of time. I will do SS brake lines. Ball joints and tie rod ends will be done also.
Are GODSPEED coilovers any good? Meagan? ISIS brand?
I will look into several options because i know it is gonna need good coilovers because i plan on putting some 17x 9/10 or maybe some 18x9 (something in that range)
BTW, I sold a h22a engine i had for 700 and now i have a 97 civic i am selling so between the money from selling both i should be able to get a blacktop s14 sr20det... I am just torn between spending all my money on a sr20det s14 swap or alot of suspension parts

Ive got ISIS coilovers only cause I got them BNIB for a stupid deal.. I would suggest getting yourself a better brand than the ones listed unless you find a great deal like I did. As far as an SR goes, its my belief that you should build supporting mods first, suspension, brakes, etc before uping power. Get to know the chassis, how it handles, how it drives, how it feels when it breaks loose when least expecting it and THEN start upgrading. I remember when I came from my Jetta to a 240, its a different animal. By no means am I telling you what to do I dont know a thing about you or your experience driving, but Id build the car and make it safe to handle 200+ hp first.

can you post a pic of how your car looks with the isis ones?
also... can someone enlighten me on what 8k and 6k springs are? i always got springs by going by the spring rate in lbs likes 450 fronts and 375 rears etc...
also does putting coilovers on make it to where big wheels will fit the front because it rids the car of the huge fat front springs.:tinhat:

lol no problem man, people here are kind of biased when it comes to honda owners going nissan, fact of the matter is that we all have to start somewhere. and why not provide a little guidance towards new comers so that we can keep the stereo type from populating.
jr ss is right. take care of maintenance stuff before you go and start modding. since your pretty new to this you won't NEED any fancy suspension setup as others may suggest. I personally have had really good luck with megan and would recommend them.

I have never used godspeed, Megan or ISIS, but what I can tell you is they are cheap components and do not have the best parts on them. Typically I hear about their pieces or components of those pieces failing.
Save your money, buy something that has some R&D behind it. There are plenty of review threads or threads in general discussing these components.
As for bushing, you're going to have a hard time finding rubber/polyurethane replacement bushings for the chassis. Nismo offers better than OE quality replacement bushings but you'll pay for them.
I suggest you sit down and read. Do some research before doing a bunch of impulse purchases on crap you don't need or want and are of shoddy materials and craftsmanship.

damn you would think spending 7-900 bucks you would get decent stuff...
so if i were to buy regular like tokico blues and springs i wouldn't be able to fit bigger wheels and tires on it :( because of the retarded front springs are like the circumference of a damn basketball...
Being i have the whole engine and trans to go in it and i have my pedals and crossmember coming i basically just wanna do something to the chassis to get it in "better than new" (meaning i want improved handling and replace all needed parts to make the chassis ready for anything i throw at it)
bushings i will take care of...ball joints, tie rod ends, and misc chassis/steering parts etc... but the struts/springs have got to go..... and i need to know what the best decent coilovers i can get for 1k.... i am leaning toward meagan or isis...just because i am a beginner and can upgrade later but need somehting decent to get my by for atleast 2-3 years...

a friend of mine had f&f's he said he like them..if you're looking for brand new coils I hear good things about fortune auto's. some stance's can be had for about 1k, I liked the way those felt.
if you can manage to find some used, not blown, "good" coils at a good price I wouldn't cut them out of the equation. I was lucky enough to find some used HKS coils at an awesome price and I can truly say they are worlds away in quality compared to most coils. I love them, sadly though they do not go that low.

Fortune Auto and PBM's are pretty much it for beginner/entry level coilovers.
Your logic of "I'm a beginner, I can upgrade later" is crap. Why spend money twice, when you can save for an extra month and get decent components? It just makes no sense.
I'm sure you've seen this; cheap, fast, reliable, chose two... Typically, cheap doesn't fall into one of those two. Get your car running and driving before spending money on pieces that do not matter at this point of your "build".
sleepyS14se

I guess all i can do is f&f because of moneys.... i would love to save up and get them but when my wife sees the purchase of F&F's for 831$ she is gonna kick me outta the house for 2 days atleast..lol..
I am thinking about doing overlays for the rear qtrs but i feel awful cutting my qtrs and riveting on new overlays...i am just so scattered on what i am doing...

07-15-2013, 01:02 PM
Defintely do no start a build thread until its finished.. or at least driving and put together, you will get bashed and probably have the thread locked.. Best way is keep a folder on your comp for yourself, ask questions in the small questions thread and do tons, tons and tons more research. Id get the thing driveable, reliable and replace everything that it needs before considering over fenders. I know how you feel, there is so much to do so much you want but the reality is, in your words, is the funds arent there.. Take your time and do it right, the ONLY reason I picked up those coils is cause I bought them BNIB for less then $400, are they bad no but they arent what I was going to get. Im using these cause the stocks were shot and different heights, so getting around to body shop and what not. As jr ss said, do it right, first time else you'll spend $$ you dont need. Watch the for sale thread for suspension arms, coils, brakes, everything.. You WILL find it there, just takes time and you have to go thru and read what people have, make offers and keep track of things..

no i am not a troll...
the reason they are helping me is because i am a very widely known throughout honda forums/communities and i am just trying to get into s chassis cars. I need good info and obviously i have nice friendly zilvians here helping me decide on what to do and what to buy etc...i am the first to admit i am lost as hell and need some good guidance on how to spend money appropriately instead of buying the same things twice yada yada yada.....
once again i appreicate those who are helping me...sorry my 240 isn't the best but it is all i got to work with and i plan on making it very nice.
I have already done 2 transactions here on zilivia where i found some cool people with even cooler prices so i jumped on em...im no troll bud

Did you see the car I posted?!?! Thats my POS, plenty of us start like that and work our ways up, just dont ask for opinions often ahaha.. Honestly, everyone is right get the car running and driveable first, plenty of unknown things will pop up during that process, trust me/us! Once that happens start investing in the basics and work your way up. Looks like a decent chassis, take your time, research, upgrade where it makes sense, research, drive and learn, research and mod.. oh and research! Im lucky enough to have a job I work online, so everyday, all day Im reading..

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money on a good clutch line... I bought the Isis one and it leaked straight out of the box.

If not, just go buy a solid brake line with fittings already on it from autozone... Works just fine and is like $3 compared to $30-60

Just to put this in perspective for you, 4yrs ago I paid $1575 shipped for a set of KW V3 coilovers. This is high quality stuff that is designed to make your car go fast around a track if you know what you're doing. They aren't designed to drag the metaphorical 240sx dick in the dirt, but they ride great and do everything I ask of and more, WITHOUT sacrificing ride quality when and where I want it.

Am i reading this correct?? energy suspension brand rear subframe bushings require the original shell outer to stay in in order for these to fit properly?? from my understanding the old ones must be burned and knocked out and then clean it up really good yet Leave the outer original bushing shell IN the subframe while installing these ES bushings
this sounds so ass backwards..i think the whole bushing should be remove.d.
Rich260z
07-22-2013, 12:58 PM
There are 4 main bushings for the rear subframe, the front crossmember is bolted directly to the frame rails. There are two front control arm bushings though. Also the energy suspension bushigns take place of the rubber part, not the metal shell.
Metal, unlike rubber does not dry up and shrink. Front control arm bushings are like this as well

Yo man, I/we are willing to help but do some searching for these things. Its on YouTube, Google, Zilvia and pretty much every 240 forum out..
Jack the car up, place on jackstands, remove wheels, disconnect ebrake cables, support diff/subframe with jack, remove subframe brace, then remove 4 bolts holding subframe, drop entire subframe assembly- diff, suspension everything!- burn out old bushing, clean it up, press in new bushings and reinstall..
There are tons of help on here but search before asking else no one will chime in except to burn you..

all i was asking was if energys instructions were accurate when they said leave the shells in it. on hondas you burn the whole bushing out AND remove the shell. Thats all. And this guy wants to send me a msg trying to help but here on the public part where everyone can see he wants to act like a weiner and tell me to give up.
look back in this thread and take a look at my green molded filthy 240. it has been there since day one. i havent cleaned it or moved it or jacked it up. i am prepping to do a whole 5 speed swap as well as a new ka24de and some mods along the way. I am not gonna do anything to it where it sits because me and my dad will do all work at the shop and on a lift luckily.
thanks again to those with kind helpful words

Yes the instructions are accurate. If you using a lift it will be even more easier. People do this in their driveway or even worse, parking garages! There a couple great videos on YouTube, strongly suggest watching them at least 2-3 times just to see everything clearly. IMO, it'd be a great time to change diff fluid, suspension arms if you can afford, brakes and inspect hubs/bearings that may need replacement. Also, if you have the time to spare, strip and paint the subframe, not necessary but why not..

exactly what my plans are.
The reason i am buyin all these parts is because when i get everything together i am gonna tow it to my dads shop and we are gonna do the swap and at that time install a good bit of other stuff as well, such as bushings, ball joints, tie rods. sway bar end links, frame bushings etc..
Now i cannot decide between poly or solid sub bushings.. i think im gonna stick with the poly being i will be on the streets mostly.
drftngs14
07-23-2013, 07:06 AM
I was contemplating both as well, but the solid bushings are known to be extremely rigid and harsh, not really ideal for DD use. Stick with poly

^^ NICE
i ordered the circuit sports return springs set for the trans. also ordered the oem nissan shift plate/boot assembly "with shift pattern". and a isis egr block off...
things are coming along quickly... i went ahead and bought a melling brand timing kit so i will take care of all the timing parts ( believe it or not i owned a 90 model 240sx for a short period of time Because it needed a timing kit put on it) <<--- that being said, is why i am doing the timing parts Before we install the swap
sleepyS14se
07-23-2013, 11:38 AM
^ by the way i had that 90 240sx for a bout 2 weeks til i had a chance to replace the timing set so it would stop slapping around so i could sell it... so i got no experience working on 240s besides that one time. lol...just didn't ever mod it or do anything cool.

well i got my s14 towed to the shop...preparing to do the swap...
being the car is covered in green mold and filth i decided to wash the car, WELL... i found a problemo!!! i noticed the drivers window was like barely cracked open i am guessing it was to vent the car while sitting, so before i wash this baby i threw a battey in it to roll it up before washing to prevent more water goin inside the car.... nothing happened. I am assuming it is the motor but hell who knows. I have read somewhere on here that there is window motor "amps", maybe it needs one idk.
I will post pics of my fresh ka24de soon. I got it fully rebuilt using oem spec parts all oem nissan where available and everything else is just aftermarket parts.

OK the bad ka24de is removed as well as the auto trans.
it was easy lol, getting the engine harness undone from the firewall and pulled through was tough but i got it done...
the engine that came OUT of the car had a single wire upstream and a 3 wire downstream...can anyone verify this is considered obd1

did you at least have the engine run and tested
sleepyS14se
08-06-2013, 07:37 AM
yes i did but thats not what is the concern right now. i need to know what the hell is going on here with o2 sensors... Being the upstream is one wire i am thinkin obd1, but being it has a downstream i feel like it may be obd2, YET i have never seen a 3 wire o2 on a older import.
by the way my means of testing the ka24 was via a boat fuel pump lol, and yes it ran fine.
