if you need someone to bench up the clutch, I can help you. We did the Steven's clutch and I was the one benching it up, along with the help of Al, Ard, and Steven on the side. :wiggle: IT was a bitch it get that tranny angled right to go in but once it's in, it is all down hill. Make sure you have BIG jacks since the higher the car goes the easier it is to angle.

Edit: does this have to be on monday? Can we do this on sunday and take only 1 day? It takes like 2-3 hours most to do it. Monday and Tuesday I got both school and work!!!

dvdevo

05-06-2004, 02:13 PM
Ya seriously, Steven had it basically done by himself in a few hours... we just had to swing by and help him put the tranny back up. Thats the only time you really need a gang of people, a floor jack is enough for you to get the tranny off yourself, swapping the clutch plates out shouldn't be difficult... you will need a ride to get that flywheel resurfaced tho. :P :D

Ah well, good excuse to have a party =)

I can't be there of course cus of work, so good luck to you. :D

For those saying shit about my cooking.... I can cook well it's a small get together type thing... You know expesive it could be to feed 120 people that kinda food....

David, the mini meet at my house is gonna be the bomb... You guys are gonna tast real cooking I'm making enchiladas.....

hahaha. decided not to spend that much. and y is keith being deported? does it have to do wit his SR and stuff?
i probably cant make it to the bbq either since i got work till *EDIT*8pm and got school the next day.

also we start on mon. if it takes a day, which i doubt, that would be perfect. due to the short time to get the flywheel resurfaced, it may take mon just to resurface and put the whole thing back up on tues.

NOW what should i get for food? and how many ppl are coming? It looks like roughly 10 so what do u want? if ppl r bringing food that would be great. (Thanks to Var if he's bringing his meat :D). also any vege eaters coming? Better to be safe than sorry

if you guys have trouble getting the tranny in, try tying a rope around the back part of the tranny and pull it up from the inside. it will be easier for the guy benching the tranny and it will be easier to get things to line up. make sure to max out the jackstands, i had mine maxed out and put on top of wooden blocks.

:hyper: 3 people is MORE than enough help.. quit complaining. do some research on how to do a clutch change. its a basic maintance process that is a hassle but its basic maintanance. i would probably pay someone to do it having done one, but if im broke w/ time i'd do it myself.

here's a little writeup for you..

pulling down the tranny can be done on your own. you should do the basics for now or shoulda done this today.

*take off exhaust (makes things hella easier since it gets in the way)
*unbolt 4 bolts on 2 piece driveshaft on the center section
*drain tranny fluid
*take off shifter/assembly from inside your car
*unbolt all the bolts around tranny
*take driveshaft off
*pull tranny out w/ a jackstand and jack as support
*start unbolting various bolts on pressure plate and then clutch disk will drop *off when you take it off
*unbolt the bolts on the flywheel
*go take flywheel to get resurfaced and just chill while you're waiting

installation is the opposite. you WILL need help putting the tranny back on. and maybe someone there to hold the crank in place while you take off the flywheel bolts since it does move around. you need a 1' 1/16'' socket or equivilent in metric. otherwise, all those ppl there woulda just been standing there. they coulda handed you tools and stuff to make things easier, but 3 ppl is more than plenty.

ppl do get caught up in their own busy lives as david tells.. but yea.. maybe you shoulda done some research in finding out what you needed to do. but what i typed up is pretty much the walkthrough. i shoulda posted it earlier. sorry jon. see you tomorrow most likely.

i dont have enough jackstands and no one is lending me one. now if you think about it, i expected several ppl to come today to help out cuz they said they would and ive always helped them out before BUT they never came. i do favors and most ppl already kno that i would help them if it was car related or somethin important but i mean come on, cant u just help me out wit one tranny job as a favor.

ALSO KENNY, you actually think that I can handle that tranny?!?! fuckin think about it, im scrawny and can barely lift anything. if that thing falls or loses balance then there goes my tranny and broken bones. ive already done all that i could.

i understand that some ppl couldnt make it cuz of personal reasons but i mean for others is it that much to ask just for a someone that knos how to do it and help me out. u have to remember this is my first clutch/tranny job and its always to watch and learn the first time then actually do it urself so u DONT FUCK UP.

Var
05-11-2004, 09:35 AM
JON! what did you guys get done yesterday? i'm coming by today so let me know specifically what you need and i'll see IF i can get some things from the shop. Maybe i'll just pick up my dad's shop key so we can go pick things up as they are needed.

FRpilot
05-11-2004, 11:06 AM
the tranny wont just DROP down after you undo several bolts. find a way to slowly get the tranny from 1-2 feet high to the ground so you can move it. nothing should break (the tranny or your bones) if you can get it down safely. youll see when ur under your car. the only thing that could happen is if you severely crack your tranny bell housing. anyways, you dont need jackstands/jack. you could use anything that will support the tranny from dropping on the floor (blocks of wood, milk carton crates, bricks, etc.) after you unbolt the bolts that hold the tranny to the engine, just wiggle it and the tranny will slowly come off. to move the tranny out after you have taken it off, i used a little handtruck that was vertical and small enough, if you dont have one, i guess you can used a piece of cardboard or wood and drag the tranny out. the tranny doesn't just "DROP" down, it's actually supported still since the 'spline' is still in the engine but once you start wiggling it off, you'd want to get the tranny out as soon as possible since the weight of the tranny is putting a lot of strain on the spline.

also, now that i think about it? do you have a place to push/pull the throw-out bearing off the carrier? i guess bring that into the shop as well while ur geting ur flywheel resurfaced. do you remember how david auto-manual swap was done? or parts of it?

chineseb0i
05-11-2004, 11:59 AM
jon, u shoulda IMed me..but u didn't so oh well..lol. If u really need help..u can help pay for my gas since i would be coming all the way from Davis..but changing the clutch isn't hard. I'm guessing you're not going to resurface ur flywheel so if i were u would get some sand paper, preferrably low grit to sand down the flywheel a bit..it's better than nothing right? But REMEBER where the bolts go. I changed the clutch on my SR with my 1 friend and playing the game "FIND WHERE THE BOLT GOES" is not fun. Besides that, i recommend someone pulling down on the downpipe, having a jack under the tranny, and someone pushing on the tranny to help get it out. IT should be easier than doing the SR cuz the SR sits close to the firewall..it took me about 10 minutes to get it out but it will budge. Also make sure you get all bolts. The harder ones can be acessed from the top with a combonation wrench. If you can't turn it due to the lack of leverage, i recommend using a bar of some sort to put it on where the wrench is and hammering it to get the sucker loose. MAKE SURE u are loosing it before u hammer it, u don't want to tighten it some more. Remember..lefty loosey..righty tighty. Also, DO NOT over tighten the pressure plate bolts. I over tightened them and it broke off..about 55-60 lbs/torque should be fine. IM me if you need help. I'll make the drive from Davis to San Mateo if you help pay for my gas fair..($10-$15?)

chineseb0i
05-11-2004, 12:07 PM
for the release bearing i got it out the ghetto way..2 flat head screw drivers, some patience, and a good ol hammer. For the pilot bearing..i didn't take it out. Honestly you don't really need to replace it since it's one of those things that you don't really need to replace that often but standard procedure and the FSM i believe say you should replace it. I didn't replace mine cuz i inspected it and looked fine to me. but hope my insight helps

phrozen
05-11-2004, 03:13 PM
word 3 ppl is more then enough... maybe ill swing by there later today. Dropping the tranny shouldnt take more then 20mins, changing the clutch assembly only takes 10 mins with the exception of the flywheel resurfacing, reinstalling the tranny takes the better part of an hour if ur benching it. Full clutch job can be done in 3 hours if u know what ur doing
