You can try to clean the contact points where it pivots at with an eraser it will remove corrosion and build up. This won't help if the needle is broken on it

@motormouth759 sounds like you're talking about a s13 sender unit(if not ,my bad), the s14's are different, they have a floater ball inside with a circuit board that fills up with gas and has a hole on the bottom to release gas ... check out this guys post http://zilvia.net/f/s-chassis/496886-s14-floater-picture-internals-here.html
