View Full Version : Clutch pedal drama. S14 blunder.

So me and buddy replaced his clutch slave today with the suspension that his pedal travel was the symptom of it going. We replaced it, removed his dampening system while we were down there, bled it and were happy with the pressure. The clutch pedal still had some travel so we adjusted the pedal from the bar/fork setup.

He drove the car maybe a tenth of a mile; first shift was nice and smooth, second shift he lost pressure, third shift he nearly had zero pressure, and finally his pedal hit the floor and he couldn't get in gear.

We bench bled the slave. We bled the lines. He has fluid. We can't see any leaks. We tried to look and see what the issue could be underneath and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Now, here is where it gets a little weird. When the pedal bottoms out and he tries to pump it while the car is running, he gets zero pressure. If he turns it off and pumps, the car gains pressure in the clutch. I am truly baffled. It doesn't make any sense to me and I can't find any leads what it could be. I'm 99.9% positive in his short drive he couldn't have gotten the fluid so hot that it could be doing that.

I was thinking to bleed it again and possibly just replace the master and [hopefully] be done with the issue.

Yes, the slave he got was from vatozone so I don't have super faith in it but it does seem to be functioning properly. And leads would be appreciated. Searching gave me no results.

Thanks in advance.

Try checking the Pivot/Fork.
The Pivots like to Break when a Stiff Clutch or Clutch Kicking is done.

Maybe it has something to do with the throw out bearing. The pressure plate is the only part of the clutch system that sees a change when the car is turned off. Also is the motor hot or cold when you turn it off and how long do you wait after you turn the car off to pump the clutch pedal?

Did you check the pedal bracket? I've seen folks whos bracket's are broke and have issues like that. Basically after pumping it, the bracket will bend sideways.

We ended up replacing the master, the slave, and checking all the lines. It seems like the master and slave were both bad. We replaced the slave, he actually built pressure but lost it. We replaced the master and he held the pressure and was fine. We are going to try tomorrow during the hottest part of the day [around 100+ degrees] and see and make sure all holds well. If he still loses pressure, we'll replace the lines [although I don't notice any leaks] and hope for the best.

As of now, nothing leaks. Pressure is being held AFTER replacing BOTH the slave and master. Slave engages fully and the master looks good behind the pedal. No bent brackets, no shifty looking parts that look wrong.

Fingers crossed.

I know this is off topic but, right now me and my brother are trying to replace the clutch and remove the tranny to do so. While we were trying to take off the driveshaft it was kind of hard to unbolt the bolts that arent facing you because either the wrench wont fit or thers not enough room to twist it out. I was wondering if maybe turning on the car to get them to spin and face torward us would be a good idea? :hsdance:

Make sure the car is in neutral, have the car on all 4 jacks, and the shaft will spin freely.

And after the slave and master were replaced, car was going strong since. I guess it was a bad seal somewhere in the master with the combination of the slave going out.
