Well, I'm looking at this '93 coupe, black, for sale with 151k miles. It has advanced timing and a flowmaster as well. Your thoughts?

Oh, and it has no hubcaps and is listed at $2200. Abuse concerns me, driving hard does not.

Check it the same way you would check any other car, and see if it looks healthy. Compression check, smell the oil for burning, or coolant, and a once over the underbody to check for worn bushings, and bent/welded/repaired pieces.

Advanced timing doesn't hurt anything as long as he ran premium fuel. If he ran crappy fuel, and got some detonation, then a compression test will likely show something wrong.

check all the fluids, see there condition. if they all look like they were just replaced, that might mean hes trying to cover a problem. I prefer buying a car with oil that appears to have been in for a thousand miles or so. if the car has a crap load of carbon, it will crude the oil up fast, and the guy might have just changed it to sell it without you noticing.

what the fuck does advanced timing mean?

1 degree? 5 degrees? 100 degrees?

the DOHC motors have knock sensors to prevent idiots from making major mistakes by advancing the timing to far.. so the timing isnt so much an issue, its whether or not the CAR you are buying is a good one.
