So as the title says, I have a s13 and I know the differential will not support 600hp. What are my options? I want to stay with the independent suspension and will not put a solid axle in. I don't mind doing a little cutting and welding though to make something fit.
Thanks, David.

Depends. Is this a drag racing application? If you're drifting or road racing/auto-x it's likely that you will not need to upgrade more than the axles.

As for drifting/road-racing/auto-x; I'm not sure yet. I know, that makes it difficult.
I'm using an s13 due to the width of the suspension as I'm putting an entire s13 front and rear suspension into my Chrysler Conquest. The front suspension is so that I will also have rack and pinion steering and it is already all worked out. This will also give me many more options for parts, poly bushings, upgrades.
The rear is for similar reasons with more options for everything. Just try and find something for the Conquest/Starion. I already have a different motor and transmission. The transmission is a T56 so I already am going to have to have a custom driveshaft made due to the length. The s13 diff ratio of 4.08 is perfect for the T56 but my motor will be putting out 600hp and I may use nitrous on top of that so the s13 diff won't cut it.
I've considered the 300zx NA diff but it is only rated at 450hp.
I have been doing a lot of reading on this but most of the posts are written for someone that has relatively in-depth knowledge of these cars. From what I have read though that I could possibly do the following.
1. the q45 diff can be used in an s13
2. the q45 internals are based on the R230 but in a R200 case
3. I can take the ring and pinion out of the s13 and put it in the q45 and have the original 4.08 ratio
Are there any problems with this?

Q45, S13, and Z32 N/A diffs are all R200's. No reason to swap the S13 diff out for another R200, especially if you're wanting the 4.083 ratio.

But isn't the S13 diff limited to around 450hp and the Q45 is good for 600+hp ??

You can keep the R200 diff, your weak point isnt the diff but the axles. The snout/spline into the hub have a tendency to twist like a pretzel once you start hitting a certain torque. Not sure of the number honestly but its not the HP that kills it. I've had buddies in Japan who were going thru stock R200 axles in their R32 RB25 with HX40s pushing over 600whp. One upgraded axles to fix the issue, the other swapped out to the larger R230 diffs/rear end off R-32 GTR/Z32 TT rear ends.

Mazworks sells axles for $1,800 that can take the power. Talk to them, as they build 1,000hp S13s for drag racing beatings. As stated above, the rear end isn't nearly as big of an issues as the axles. I am putting down 460rwhp through a KAAZ 1.5 in an S14 differential with Greddy cover, Energy Suspension bushings. No problems for me so far.

Obligatory.
