View Full Version : Rod Knock; Code 34

I have a 92 S13 KA24DE, with the rod knock sensor code (code 34)
going off and throwing my car into limp mode.

I've changed both the sub harness, and knock sensor/ as well as O2 sensor.

I have no noticeable knocking, the only symptoms I can hear is a small chirp sound that comes and goes near the valve cover (ill try to upload a video today)

Another thing i noticed code 34 comes on usually when I'm shifting from 3rd to 4th to try and speed up but all it does is rev up and the car doesn't feel like it wants to push forward to speed up (loss of torque)

Please help as this is the only car I have at the moment and my DD

:ddog:

sry, i had to

why did you change the harness?

why did you change the harness?

Well first i only changed the knock sensor it self with the stock sub harness after installing it and resetting my ecu no change was noticed code still came back on

so then i thought the sub harness was the the problem the stock one looked pretty worn so i changed it, and other than it taking a bit longer for the code to come on. It only comes on now when i shift at higher rpms with noticable torque loss.

a knock code shouldn't put the car into limp mode at all, so I'd look into a greater/bigger issue.

With that said, it can easily be a faulty sensor itself or it's overly sensitive and pickup up nonsense. Hard to say with the KS

maybe you just have knock lol but you said it happens when your shiffting do you hear any noise from your trans when your shift maybe a bad TO bearing? as this could cause a False knock because the knock sensor is just picking up noise that is transfered through the block.

So it was the clutch one of my buddies figured it out...

I couldnt really figure out because it felt like the car was in limp mode and it had problems taking off and the idles where weird

The problem was I would get in my car clear the ECU from code 34, thinking it was throwing it in limp mode and would then attempt to take off still the car sometimes took off fine, I always noticed a little shake between shifts at 2-3-4, so when the transmission rattled the KS picked up as a knock.

Oh yes it will, there is a reason why I eliminated it entirely.

I wouldn't call it limp mode either because of how high the engine can rev, but it does have an effect on performance.

The knock sensor code is usually a malfunction in the system. Like a break in a wire, or faulty sensor or a bad connection. It is not normally sensing knock and creating that code. It is a high/low voltage thing. And it does restrict your timing, and on boosted cars with factory boost solenoids, will cut boost as well. That is mainly a Z thing if I remember right. Check the sensor, check the wiring, and check your grounds on that circuit. That code will cause decreased power and poor gas mileage. My TT Z32 had that issue. I replaced the whole damn system. Efi harness and all.

Without a doubt it pull pull a bunch of timing but it won't lock it into that mode at all. I had issues with my KS years ago on the turbo altima (now that car is a MFer to change the KS on) and ended up it be the stupid harness. But It certainly isn't like when you have limp mode triggered.

Oh sorry mr technical, lets just call it. MY SHIT DONT RUN RIGHT CAUSE OF 34... :bash:

Anyway, you can shove a resistor in there although if your motor has a legit knock or chain rattle you're fucked anyway. But go to an electonics store, shove a 1hz, 1ohm resistor in the sub harness plug, disregard knock sensor and other end of subharness.

If your car still runs like shit after clearing 34. You got other issues.

Knock sensor is not for rod knock. It is for engine ping from running to lean or having to much timing. There is a huge difference between the 2

Where did you get the knock sensor???

I got mine from autozone, the problem is fixed thought it was the clutch setting off the ECU code

Replaced clutch and flywheel. shifts like butter and no more KS going off

Autozone, huh? You'll be replacing that VERY soon. Don't buy autozone crap, ESPECIALLY electronics...

It's less me being mr technical, more along the lines of thinking when some dipshit goes and searches this in the future and he's looking for answers, you just don't want him to think it's limp mode as that will get him searching the wrong stuff up again.

...2 words for ya!

Ain't that the truth.

To the O/P you can get OEM knock sensors off ebay for peanuts from dealers clearing inventory
