Im planning on buying the Tomei 256 poncams for my S13 and building my head as well. Just wondering if I can only use the Tomei valve springs or can i purchase other brand valvetrain items, ie brian crower, supertech, etc. All input is appreciated.

Well, you CAN purchase whatever you please.

These days many stay away from BC stuff I fee like. I have an old head with bc springs and retainers (before much else existed)..but supertech guides and seals(currently in progress). Supertech is used by mazworx, who is doing the machine work for me.

Codyace swears by jwt and I think that guy knows some good stuff. Tomei is also very good stuff.

Hope that helps...just my .02$

personally i am using bc valvesprings, valves, and retainers on my s13 redtop head with tomei 256 poncams, and have had NO issues of any sort with them.

Poncams do not require upgraded valve spings and retainers, I would either save my money or get more aggressive cams, like Procams or JWT C series.

In regards to mixing and matching valve train components, I would compare the camshaft's lift to the spring's bind height. This would only be an issue when getting into aggressive/high lift cams.

i should also add that my rev limit is 8200 rpm and i've never had a valvetrain issue (knock on wood)
