View Full Version : Question about ECU Compatibility (Chipped)

Hey all,
I just picked up an ECU earlier today, purchased for use with my redtop since it has Nistune Type-3 daughterboard installed already and consult cable. CL ad stated it was from a 94 SR20DET so I picked up during lunch in a hurry and didn't inspect too well beforehand.
Once I got back to work I noticed it's an A11-C96 CB3 out of a 93 G20.. Are there any key differences between this ECU and SR20DET? I figure there are, from searching it sounds like SR turbo vs NA the coprocessor is different.
I just want to be sure whether or not this is interchangeable/compatible before I try and get my money back.
**I searched forum and couldn't find any definitive or clear answers on this so sorry if I missed anything**

Is it possible its from a fwd sr20det like the bluebird motor? I dunno if they are compatible but with the nistune daugter board installed maybe it makes it work? Call nistune or email is where i would start

Dude...
5 seconds... literally...:picardfp:
NIStune - Realtime ECU Tuning (http://www.nistune.com/equipment-products.php)
match up which one you have if not pick up the phone and call them directly...
From what you wrote it should be a type 3 and you should be good to go.

Sorry, I think you kinda misunderstood what I was asking. I already read everything off their website and also sent them an email since I don't have chance to call today while at work.
I already know the ECU is compatible with the type-3 daughter board. What I was wondering is whether all ECU's compatible with the Nistune Type-3 can be calibrated the same (in this instance an SR20DE ecu mapped for S13 w SR20DET). Wasn't sure whether there was any difference with the ECU itself and compatibility since I can't find anyone using this specific ECU on SR20DET.
I didn't assume all ECU/Engines listed for Nistune Type-3 meant they were all interchangeable? If that's what you were implying then I'd be good, my bad for misinterpreting if that's the case

Thanks, that's what I was initially thinking but it's actually from a 93 Infinity G20 N/A (fwd i believe). I figure the nistune board might enable it to be imaged to a compatible ROM but wasn't certain. I'll plug it in tonight and check what image it's currently running

I think I get what your saying now, you bought a ECU of CL
was listed for a 94 SR w/ Nistune type 3
went home only to find that it's listed as A11-C96 CB3 out of a 93 G20
Now you want to use the G20 ECU on your SR correct?
my bad I read it as if you were asking about the nistune board itself were interchangeable
From my experiences you will not be able to use the SR ecu on your car.
You should be able to take out the nistune board and install it on the correct ECU but ask nistune about that to make sure.
To be safe post a picture of it first.
They may just used an old ECU case but the SR mother board... You never know with CL

No worries, I work in IT so I'm a pretty well-versed when it comes to finding solutions using <Google> search haha.
Yeahp you're correct, was listed as an SR20DET Ecu from 94 w Type-3 daughterboard. I'll post up a picture shortly, info should be accurate though since I pulled apart quickly at work
Update!! :rl:
 Nistune replied back to me earlier so we've been emailing back and forth, now I've got the answer!
**Correction, see my last post, OnTheChip cleared up** Any of the ECU's listed as compatible for each Nistune Type # are the same internals where only difference would be the stock engine/ECU programming. Therefore any ECU/Engine listed under Type-3 in their compatibility list could work with any combination engine/ecu in that same list. I was told the ECU I purchased has an SR20DET base ROM so I should be all set if that's the case
The important thing to note, the base ROM of the daughter board needs to be programmed for your intended engine application. For instance if it's a type-3 DB it won't work with any type-3 ECU listed without being reflashed (By Nistune)

just as a precaution i would cross check all the pins to be sure that they are the same on each ecu. because that could cause a problem. they told you it could work. i "could" use a 4g63 ecu on my ka but it dosnt mean its plag and play.
hope it is plug and play or go get your cash back man!

The S13 SR20DET ECU and G20 ECU are not compatible because the G20 does not have the 4 ignition outputs for COP.

This is correct actually, I asked about this once you mentioned to confirm with Nistune. My initial inquiry to them was a pretty confusing, similar to my initial post on this thread :p
Thanks for the info OnTheChip!
