UPDATE 10/13/2013: I'm dropping my asking price one final time to $8,100! This price is STUPID low considering the extensive list of quality parts, the condition of the car and the meticulous detail-oriented approach of the build. The car recently received a full inspection; the engine is stout. Compression test showed 160-165 psi all around. No oil/coolant/brake/clutch fluid leaks. Brake pads & rotors well within spec. Let's give this car a new home!
Note: For quickest response, contact me by email; acousticnacho22 (@) yahoo.com or by text/call at (seven one four) 925-5260. I’m located in Fullerton. I have very limited time so I likely won’t visit the forums often so if you don’t get a response here, try me email or phone. Also, I don’t have many photos as of now. I’ll try to get more eventually. Ok, on to the post.
Sup guys,
I’ve decided to finally let go of my beloved 240sx. I’ve owned this car since March 2006, 7 years now. I am the second owner of the car. The car is not salvaged, it has a clean title, and it’s been a California car all its life. There’s no rust and the interior is fully intact (you’d be surprised). No cracked dash or missing interior pieces. The previous owner left everything stock minus a set of ugly chrome wheels which are long gone. It still even had the factory radio!
From day one, the goal was to build an enjoyable, streetable car that didn’t look like a drift missile and could still be reasonable to drive on a daily basis. For the powertrain, I had G-Dimensions in City of Industry install the tried and true S13 SR20DET redtop. Out went the factory turbo and in went a brand new S15 GT28R dual ball bearing turbo and all the supporting mods and plumbing. This turbo gave more than enough power for a street driven car (never had a formal dyno performed) and still had a boost response virtually the same as the factory turbo. Boost is safely controlled by an electronic A’pex AVC-R (long considered the most reliable boost controller on the market for these cars). The factory ECU remained in order to preserve the drivability of the car and it received a ROM tune by RS-Enthalpy. Currently, the car is on a base tune. The fine tune can be performed by RS-Enthalpy for ridiculously cheap, but I never got around to getting the car on a dynamometer which RS-Enthalpy needs to create the new tune. It simply wasn’t on my priority list. Water temperature is controlled by a thick all-aluminum Powered By Max radiator accompanied by two enclosed and ducted electric fans powered by a DiF fan controller. Oil temperature is kept on check by a B&M oil cooler with custom plumbing and fittings. The oil cooler setup also has its own integrated thermostat so driving it every day is a non-issue and you don’t have to concern yourself with cold-starts. Just drive it like a normal car. No compromises here.
The suspension was updated with fully adjustable components all-around by Ed’s Garage in Placentia (Nissan & Toyota Performance Specialist). The alignment has always been performed to OEM specifications because frankly the car has never been drifted! Yeah, I know I’m lame. Plus, the tires are expensive and I wanted them to last! Haha. Check the modifications list for full details on parts.
The drivetrain revolved around two things; 1) A S15 Silvia Helical LSD (proof it was never drifted!) because it gave much improved power delivery without the frequent maintenance of a clutch LSD and 2) a more responsive final gear. Factory final gear is 4.06, the car now has a 4.64! The conversion was performed by a differential specialist (American Gear Shop) using all Nissan OEM components as well as the expensive and hard-to-find Nismo stepped shank bolts so no worrying about loose parts in your diff. The beauty of this setup and that you’ll never fall out of boost. This is what truly made the difference in the driving experience.
The brake system is another OEM hybrid setup that has worked flawlessly. 12.36” DBA 4000 Series rotors from a 3000GT VR4 are coupled with 4-piston Z32 calipers and Project Mu brake pads up front. These rotors, despite being larger, have no brake pad overhang like the 350z track rotor setup does so you’re using the entire brake pad surface. In the rear is the complete Z32 setup; 11.7” PowerSlot rotors, 2-piston Z32 calipers, Project Mu brake pads, new e-brake cables and Z32 e-brake assembly.
The full parts list can be found below (or attached). I kept receipts throughout the entire build and can provide all of this. The total investment in parts currently installed on the car tally’s to upwards of $20,000. This is for parts alone! No labor cost is included in this figure, nor the cost of the car itself. My asking price is a ridiculously low $8,100 (Final Price Drop!). At this price, you could buy the car and make a huge profit by parting it out. Obviously, I’m not looking to make a profit out of all this; I’m not “flipping” the car. This has been my long term project and to be honest, I never saw myself selling it until recently. I’ve simply made the difficult decision to let go of it.
Updated: When I purchased the car in 2006, it had 202k miles. I had the SR20DET installed at 222k and later had it rebuilt top-to-bottom at 242k miles (by G-Dimensions). Presently, the odometer reads 266k miles therefore, there are only 24k miles on the motor since the rebuild. The chassis is holding up really well!
But let’s be real here; the car is 20+ years old and it’s not in perfect condition. First, the paint is in need of a refresh. The body panels line up really well and the body is straight, but there’s a noticeable hit on the passenger’s quarter panel (see images). Second, the A/C setup was never completed. The story is it was supposed to be setup at the time of the motor installation, but it was missing an adapter (like the one by CodyAce) and the line for the adapter. All other components are still on the car (condenser, evaporator, hard lines, compressor, and HVAC unit) and the car had working A/C before the swap. All other accessories are in working order including power windows, power mirrors, cabin heater, stereo (w/ iPod), dome & map lights, rear window wiper & also rear window defroster. As for the mechanicals, there are only 2 things that need attention. The power steering pump is leaking and the clutch is reaching the end of its life so replacements are highly suggested. I recommend an ACT Street/Strip clutch disc rated to 390 lb*ft torque which Is what the car has now (only the disc is needed as the rest of the ACT setup is already on the car). Overall, the car has received lots of attention (too much probably hehe) and I think it shows in the selection of the parts and the quality of the build.
So why am I selling it? Answer… because I don’t want to give it away Haha! The truth is that I’ve taken a different direction in life. For the last 6 of 7 years, this car seriously ran my life; it was an obsession for sure. Long story short… I’ve settled down my life a lot, I got into a serious relationship, then got married, graduated from college, started my career and moved on with my life. Nonetheless, the car is a blast to drive and I know there’s someone that can make more of it that I can.
