has anyone used something like this before? is so how accurate is it? they claim accuracy of .1mph.... which in most cases would by more accurate that a stock speedo...

this is the one im looking at getting....

4" GPS Speedometer Gauge 140mph (w/ turn signal and high beam). Auto GPS Speedometers From Speedhut. (http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR4-GPS-02T/1/GPS-Speedometer-Gauge-140mph--(w--turn-signal-and-high-beam))

Yes, it is called a Garmin. It is shaped like a rectangle and tells me where I am going. Usually accurate within 1-2 mph.

I have not had a speedo in 3 years of owning my 240. done 2 roadtrips across the country no problem along with daily driving. For times that I have had issues(cop pulls out) I got an app off the android market called "dashboard" and thats accurate tested against other cars following me. Also if your good enough you should be able to judge your speed off RPM. for instance 2k 5th gear for me(5speed and 300zx diff) is 45 mph. 2k 4th gear is 35. also remember load at the same time. going down a hill your going to be going faster; up a hill slower... You'll get the hang of it.

this is the only video i could find of it, it looks like it works very well... maybe ill just have to take a risk.... ill do a writeup and maybe it will be able to help others..... could be a viable option ot others with a z33 trans swap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgHV3v7ZYDM

i couldnt figure out how to embed it... at the end they show it in use on a track car...

This is actually a very bad idea. Taking the chance of "guessing" at what your speed is, has nothing to do with being "good enough". Let alone, not everywhere in the country has cell service, so good luck getting your speed when you're in the middle of BFE.

Just get a regular GPS; Garmin, Tom Tom, jihad jihad, whatever the case.
OR! get a working speed sensor.

$299 seems a little steep for that gauge, but it does look nice and fancy. Possibly something I'll look into in the future. But for now, I'll stick with my stock speedo, & Tom Tom for backup.

Auto Meter also has released GPS speedometers and a GPS interface that works with most aftermarket speedos. They work very well, but like GPS navigation there is a possibility of losing the signal in long tunnels or cities with skyscrapers.

Benefit of a GPS speedo over a GPS navigation is better accuracy as well as a higher refresh rate. Most GPS navigation systems can be slow to respond under high acceleration/deceleration due to a low refresh rate.

Full disclosure, I work for Auto Meter Products and was once a forum sponsor on Zilvia. If a mod wants to delete my post due to this, no hard feelings.

I have a GPS too(for the no cell service situation)... I have not had a single issue basing speed off my tach. just be conservative with it. Not like you have to be right on 45 in a 45... Its not illegal to go a few under if a cop is following you either way. IMO if your that worried about it GPS is the easiest fix. Other than that Advance auto sells a speed sensor for 108(roughly).

The Speedhut GPS speedos are phenomenal! This exact product is one of the many reasons I became a Speedhut dealer. Their GPS units also have their "hot start" feature.... which allows the speedometer to accurately read within 2-3 seconds of powering up.

Let me know if you need any pricing.

Bumping up this thread because I am curious of how fast these speedhut speedometers refresh during acceleration in a fast car. This is the only reason I would want to purchase one over just using a normal phone gps or gps unit to read speed. I want to see accurate acceleration instead of one second it reading for example 50mph and then reading 120mph a few seconds after you already slowed down already.
