how to remove shift knob

mang.. i cant believe i have to ask this... but yea my S13  shift knob doesnt want to come off.. i tried twisting it both ways.. i dont want to twist too hard..  is there some secret way or something?

Like I said, you're gonna have to cut it off.  Take a razor, and make sure you don't accidentally slice your hand.  Utility knife would be better.  The vinyl has been shrinking on there since you bought it.  Once you cut it halfway up, you should be able to unscrew it counter clockwise.

Well, I guess that would work if you have no intention of ever re-using the stock knob.  Get a thick terry clothe and wrap it around the knob.  Now, take a big set a pliers, get a good firm grip on it, and twist counter-clockwise until it gives.

i have taken 3 off so far...al you gota do is grab that son of a b!tch and twist counter clock wise. you really really have to twist hard dont worry you wont brake anything. after you brake it lose you have to turn it alot..(lots of hreads on it). if you want hav some one the the bottem of the shaft to reduce any strain your puting on it...agin just grab and twist very very hard...absolutly no need to cut it off. you will end up with a few less fingers doin it that way.

nah not yet.. im still deciding if i want to.. i just wanted to see what the type r shift knob would look like.. but now.. im begining to like the stock knob ..

LOL. &nbsp;Thanks, I needed that. &nbsp;By the way, prior to cutting off the shift knob, I actually did wrap it with a towel a put pliers on it. &nbsp;I still couldn't get the #### thing to turn. &nbsp;The truck stays outside a lot, so I'm thinking the shifter just glued itself on over the years. &nbsp;I figured rather than hurting the stick or housing where the little plastic ball dealy is, (thru wrenching it hard) I'd cut it off and call it good. &nbsp;Just have to be careful with the razor blade.

yea pretty much.. haha too lazy.. but the type r shifter feels so good like an egg =) i dont care about how ricey it is or wutever.. its a type r shift knob.. doesnt mean it HAS to be on a type R

I really do think this is the way to go. &nbsp;I mean if you can't screw it off. Saw that MF right the #### off.

the only thing about pulling and twisting &nbsp;is you can twist the stick and the revirse lights dont come on i had to retwist the shaft to aline it for them to come back on

1- Unscrew the shifter knob
2- Pop up the radio and shifter trim to remove the &quot;leather&quot;boot Clips hold the plastic trim around the radio and the shifter. 2 clips at the rears of the shifter, 2 between the shifter and the radio, and 2 at the top of the radio.Use your hand to unclip the rear ones by grabbing the trim through the shifter hole and pull up. Then unclip the ones around the radio.
3- Unscrew four 10mm bolt to remove the body-to-shifter rubber boot.
4- Cut the lower tie-wrap that hold the tranny-to-shifter boot.
5- Under the tranny-to-shifter boot, you have to remove the inner snap ring that hold the shifter. Long nose pliers work fine for this job.
6- Pull the shifter out.
7- Use a funnel to pour oil into the shifter hole. Assembly is the reverse procedure. You need a new tie-wrap. In total there is 3 boots to remove: The visible &quot;leather&quot; boot, the body-to-shifter rubber boot and the tranny-to-shifter rubber boot. Then a snap-ring to remove and your done.

Watch out for oil spill!

right now i dont have a boot cuz when i installed my SS, i could not get the boot off........
i got the knob from a junkyard
