It's not that they can't but more like they won't. Most tire places aren't going to stretch a tire for you that's out of the recomended tire size for your wheels. It's their ass on the line if anything should happen to you. But there are places that will do it so just keep searching.

I can tell you from experience, it is a PAIN IN THE ASS to stretch tires and shops also don't want to be held liable if something goes bad once they're on your car. Have you offered to write up a contract stating that you won't hold them liable for any potential damage to you or the car? Try that and maybe offering them some extra money. Other than that, keep looking I guess.

wow i have NEVER had any problems with tire shops stretching tires. when i took a 205/40/17 to them to put on my 17X9 they had no problem. same with 215/45/17.

stretcing tires is easier than putting an oversized one onto a rim...

stretching tires is cake...i stood next to my friend at a tire shop and chatted with him as he put 215's and 225's onto 17x9 wheels in all of 10min...no fuss, no mess, easy..easy...
they must be retarded...

I don't think you are getting it.... it can be done, pretty easily. But most shops won't do it because the tire is not recomended for it. Say you blow a tire doing something stupid, event though it's your fault if you take the car to the tire place and blame them, they have no leg to stand on because they mounted the "wrong" tires on your vehicle. It's just liability reasons, not difficulty reasons.
that would make them smart, not retarded.

i do get it...quite clearly as a matter of fact...my opinion hasn't changed though...i still consider them retarded...
so you are saying they also shouldn't mount any aftermarket wheels?..they are a different size after all...they could be liable for your speedo being off and getting a ticket...or entering a corner too fast and crashing...
hmmm maybe i should double check on these aftermarket wiper blades...might cause streaks and i'll crash and sue Kragen...
or hey, these brake pads...or for that matter a larger brake upgrade...
c'mon man...it's not like it's a huge deal...he's talking about 235's on a 9in wheel..that's not even a stretch...lol...if it was 205's ok, i would be more apt to agree with you...but i have a feeling the shops he went to were less then informed...they are prolly not used to doing it, therefor lack experience, and are scared to try it...believing people like you who promote the rare dangers that do occasionally occur...
stop trying to be righteous...

What the hell, all i was saying is that is "their" reasoning. I have heard it from tire shops. Relax. I didn't say nobody would do it, but most places won't. I didn't say whether it was right or wrong, simply they probably don't want to be liable. Righteous???

same thing goes for having an alignment done. i wanted them to dial in negative camber and other adjustments, but they refused saying it would cause premature tire wear etc. i told them i dont give a rat's ass about premature tire wear. but they still didnt wanna do it. then i took it to a "race" shop and they were willing to do it to my specs and everything. take it to the right place to begin with.

go to the little mom and pop shops, they'll always do it for you, and you can haggle the price around a bit too to save some money.

sorry noke, but youre wrong on this one. with the culture we live in, where everyone is trying to get some free money, you have to be more careful about the shit you do. who would have ever thought mcdonalds would get sued for burning their lip on hot coffee? or what about thiefs suing for hurting themselves while in the act of robbing someone? does it make sense? not particularly. but if you are going to save yourself from stuff like that, you have to be careful. a contract may be necessary if he cant find someone to do it. ive never heard of someone having to do it, but shit, if he wants it enough, hell do it.

the first shop i took them to tried but couldnt get them on.......which i dont understand, because they put 215/45-17s on my 17x8 with no problem..........it was all the shops i tried after that that wouldnt do it, probably because the first place left the tires mounted on the rim and the other shops assumed they couldnt if the first one couldnt........but i eventually found a shop that wasnt scared to get the job done, and had a air blaster so it wasnt a problem........now all i need to do is put my 5 lug hubs on
