Ok so i need a bit of advise from somebody who knows a bit about gearbox's in general here.

I was bashing down the highway and coming into 3rd gear after redlining 2nd the gearbox crunched real bad and refused to let me get into 3rd gear (my gearbox has always been a wee bit stubborn going into 3rd and 5th if changing quickly) obviously i let off the gas and it slipped back into gear like normal and everything was fine until i needed to use reverse.

It did NOT want to go into reverse at all. Had to use alot of force to get it in so i could reverse out of my park and while reversing it made a horrible squealing/ whining noise.

Who knows what the problem might be? All the other gears work fine. I will pull the gearbox out this afternoon so i'll be ready to get straight into work when i know where to start.

Appreciate the help!

crunched a synchro and its broken peices jammed in the reverse gear. same thing happened to me but it was in 5th gear instead of reverse.

Oh really! Thanks for the help man. Did it make a horrible whine aswell? Would it just be a matter of cleaning it out and replacing the broken syncro?

Your gear box is toast... Time for a new one.

Really? It still runs through all the gears. Surely replacing the damaged parts will fix it?

If your going thru all that effort a rebuild kit would be ur best bet. But then Again. Buy a new tranny for like 150 of Craig's or something.

replacing damaged parts could involve replacing a lot of the interals when you could just pick up another one. are there any stronger aftermarket units you could pursue?

The only aftermarket SR20 transmission I know of is the S15 Nismo 6speed that's about $6000.

OP, pick up another trans from craigslist or whatever internet yard sale site you have in NZ and stop using cheap gear oil.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Yea a second hand gearbox in New Zealand is around $800 so i'm pretty gutted! Can any body point me in the right direction to buy a rebuild kit? How much are we looking at? I have another car so i have no urgency to get it running so I may just bring the box into the living room and start pulling stuff apart.
What do you think about rb25 gearbox as an option? I am not running and silly power at the moment but may in the future? A lot of work?

300 or 350Z trans swap!!!

It's going to cost just as much to rebuild it as sourcing another one. Most of the time once the trans has failed in some aspect it's trash. I had the same issue happen on my trans. Reverse went, had to use a lot of force to get it out and then 3rd, 4th, and 5th went. The SR trans isn't very strong and you'll be doing the same thing to it within a given period of time.

UPDATE: I pulled the gearbox half apart today. The rear shift fork was cracked right through in half. I understand this is a major problem but car was still going through 1-5 no problem. :/

Does anybody still think the 3rd gear syncro shat itself or should i replace the broken fork and be done with it?

Thanks

Yeah because those transmissions were weak to begin with.

Replace the fork if a second hand transmission is too expensive and see if that fixes your issues. If you have CAs over there those transmissions will work with a simple bell housing swap. FS5W71H is the transmission model if that makes searching simpler, or if they will ship overseas here is a kit Nissian 4 and 5 speed FS5W71 Manual transmission Rebuild kit parts | FS5W71C overhaul kits - Drivetrain.com (http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/manual_transmission_overhaul_kits/nissan_f5w71_overhaul_kit.html)

Just to confirm are you sure that is the correct gearbox number as under that category are the 2.4L silvias. Mine is SR20. Just double checking before I purchase. Cheers

You could take a manual trans from a 5 speed ka24de and swap the bellhousing.

The SR and KA transmissions are identical minus the bell housings. The KA is the 2.4l motor and was only available in the US version, we got the shaft.

Only difference is the sychros are weaker and 5 gear is a better ratio. Should be cheap as hell too

What? The synchros are the same... It's the same transmission, same code. The only one with a different 5th gear are the S14 and non 6speed S15 SR transmissions with a .838 vs the .759 of the others.

All KA's SOHC and DOHC
1st = 3.321
2nd= 1.902
3rd = 1.308
4th = 1.000 (Direct Drive)
5th = 0.759 (Over Drive)

Note: Dual/Double Synchro Ring 2nd Gear

All S13 SR20DET's
1st = 3.321
2nd= 1.902
3rd = 1.308
4th = 1.000 (Direct Drive)
5th = 0.759 (Over Drive)

All S14 SR20DET's
1st = 3.321
2nd= 1.902
3rd = 1.308
4th = 1.000 (Direct Drive)
5th = 0.838 (Over Drive)

Note: Dual/Double Synchro Ring 2nd & 3rd Gear

Youll probably pull a ka trans from a truck though there in NZ right?

I found this, worth checking out

A few differences can be found, depends on year

another

On a side note, it's interesting how much bigger the 3/4 shift fork is in the SR box. To the best of my knowledge, the SR and KA 5 speeds have the same gearsets, but it looks like the SR is beefed up in some other ways. I wonder what else is different?

records keeping finding is fun time

When they say, "Aluminum cases, rear load - 31 .25mm O.D. large pocket needle bearing" why does the kit go up $100 in price, how does this part affect the synchro?

Does anyone know where to buy the tools to rebuild the transmission FS5W71H

Going to ask a trans shop soon. yawn

update:
trans shop: "We have a big press we use for everything. Your going to need at least a 20 ton press. It can handle most of the job"

me: "so you dont think ill need any of these special tools?"

trans shop: "You shouldn't need anything really special besides a range of pullers and the press"

me: "what about the strange wrench like tools, like this one: (J26348) Wrench $225.09"

trans shop: "well, it does help to use the right tool (I have one of those) but when I don't have it, I just use the right socket and (something about tightening against the counter shaft I missed it)

me: "and what do you charge to rebuild one of these 5-speeds"

trans shop: "Its $275 plus parts. And I can probably get you better parts for less than what you pay online"

That is fairly inexpensive. Up here in Clearwater, the average "service price" is about $600. If you pull the trans does play the factor.

I'm going to have to do some digging around and see if I can find someone up here that isn't so expensive. Lord knows that I need both of mine rebuilt.

right? Us 240 owners each have like four. I know for sure I Have at least 5 total but 2 of them are in great shape still. My local friend has another three or four, in various states (might need to make 1 trans out of 2 kinda thing) but thats five+ already I can get my hands on. I'd love to, in one quick single shot, create a lifetime supply stash of fresh rebuilt SR transmissions. Muahaha evil laugh.
