hey guys and gals

I have a question that I've been pondering

I'm going to build up a s13 hatchback 240sx with rb25det.

I've been debating on the body kit to use. I really like the m-sport type b kit however living in southern california I'm very concerned about having to go to the smog ref if i get pulled over.
This kit is very blaring that you have a turbo'd car.

or I can build a sleeper JDM inspried car with all stock body parts
180sx car.

With this kit I will be "legal" with a front plate paint the intercooler black and just have a really fast car.

I have started to collect all the 180sx stuff so it's not big deal to build it I'm just debating on dumping 1000 on a 180sx front end with all the lights and stuff.

just a thought

Any thoughts?

OEM JDM if you have the money...which i guess you do considering you are looking at MSports..

That's not actually a sleeper considering you are using Kouki aero. Not many 240sx's have that "kit". If it were a true "sleeper" then you should keep the aero from whatever year your 240sx is.

Get a Lip, thats all you need for performance, the cops will still hear your exhaust no matter what kit your rocking. Msports is the shit, Kouki is cool, just make sure you get the OEM lip. But also if you want a nice car, you will need nice wheels, and those also attract the police :-/

Now I just got to convince myself that building a "stock car is worth it"

The front end alone is equivalent to the M-sport kit
Bumper, lights, side fender bumper covers

Haha..

i'd stay away from anything too attention getting. my friend got caught with his SR a few months ago and he has a stock body zenki with hubcaps and dents. how did he get caught? gp sports exhaust and blitz fmic caught the chp's attention. now he has he stock exhaust back on and painted his fmic black.

so what happened to your friend? since it's the chp that saw the exhaust and fmic usually = to pop hood...
and did he get out of it, if so, how?

I would also say keep it stock. I love cars that look like shit but are fast, but its even better with ours, because I think our cars look pretty good stock. too bad everybody else says look mom a probe. Id say if anything go 180sx.

I agree I am very into the Sleeper type setups, I think that is because I used to have a wings west bumper on my first car and that instantly made everyone ask me if it was fast and stuff, and I just got a lot of shit for having a "body kit" or whatever. I think aero is good when it is actually serving a purpose (I.E. more air to FMIC, etc.) but when it is there to look good or whatever and the car has no engine to back it up that is just asking to be flamed. That is just my opinion, I think it would be cool to build up your car's engine and stuff and try to keep the exterior as stock as possible, especially if you are thinking it will be a problem...good luck

popped the hood, 4 chps were there, takin pictures. my friend nearly shit himself. luckily it didn't get impounded, but he said they told him he'd have to go the ref. he hasn't gotten the notice to do so yet. maybe they were just trying to scare him, but i dunno. he swapped the exhaust and painted the fmic just to be more low key in the meantime cuz he still has to drive the car around.

i thought that you cant just paint the FMIC, i would think that it messes w/ the cooling ability, but correct me if im wrong.

Sorry I'm still new here. Can somebody tell me why he would be in trouble. Is it because the sr20 doesn't pass regulations. Sorry, we don't have emission laws here in OK. (or inspections)

even if you can tune an SR to pass smog, it fails because the turbo version of the SR was never federally approved for use in US vehicles. it's illegal in every state, just that in states with no kind of inspections, you never get caught.

alex, he's tentatively decided to keep the car cuz he hasn't gotten his notice to go to the ref and it's been a few months
