changing bushings

I have a 95 240 and i thought that i was the only one getting that clunking noise coming from the back when i shift during low speeds and when i brake. Anyway... i have come the the conclusion that i need to change the subframe bushings or get a spacer installed. NOw the question is. How neccessary is it to do this fix? other then being annoying when driving, is it detrimental to my car if i dont get this fixed right away? or can i just let it slide until i cant take this annoyance anymore.

Well, the subframe isn't going to fall out or anything. It might feel a little vague or squirmy. Mine drove OK before I put spacers in but that clunking annoyed the crap out me.
