I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted or seen a s13 fastback with a targa top. Planning on doing it to my car so I was also wondering how important the top of the car is to the structural rigidity of the car (will removing the top section ruin the car and make the body unstable). If It becomes unstable, do you think I would be alright if I actually welded my roll cage to the car and joined the front windshield to the back with a center bar? Thanks

the top of the car helps hold the whole car together stiffer..removing the top will make the body less stiff..not worth it

hmmm i don't really know but this is how i think of it .. get a convertible since it is pretty much topless and then chop off the top of another junked 240, ( coupe that is, fastback might work but i don't really know ) and do your fabrication to make it a targa top... so that way you don't raelly have to worry whether you will screw up the rigidity or not...

whoa that sounds interesting. i just had mental visions of a hatchback trunk on a coupe ass.. but that would require some welding, cutting, and custom work for the hatch to fit. supra/mr2 look w/ the hatch? unq look w/ coupe?

I fooled around with this idea for a bit. Doesn't seem that feesible (structurally) as it was not designed with that part missing in mind.
Some kid in my town did this but not to succefully. He had a s13 hatch and just to a sawzall to it, now I know your probably thinking of something more professional, but it was a targa. But the top was garbage when he was done with it, he lost the use of his seatbelts, and if it rained he carried a tarp with him. Lucky the motor seized on him and put an end to his god awfull 240.

For rigity, couldn't you put a couple of bars going accross it? Maybe fab up a cross top bar with one going front to back, and another going side-to-side ? Or even two going each direction? Two going front to back on the outer sides so for the most part the middle is almost 100% open, and two going side to side, the first one being very near to the front and the second being very near to the back? Weld them up so its all one peice ? Titainium? Aluminum ? Wrap it in carbon fiber ?

you could brace the undercarrage for rigity too, people do it with 240z's still looses some to, not to mention i think it would look like ass, what i think would be cool would be a convertable iwth a fastback ass

I wanted to do this as well. I am looking for a cheap hatchback to do this on. prefurably in the 500 dollar range. just to see what would happen. I think it would look sweet.

I would say that if you really wanted to do a targa top....instead i would take a coupe, and have the top and rear pillars taken off as on large piece, like an miata with a pop- off top. That would be pretty sick. I'd do it just to make people go :wtf:
