Hello, i am about to buy a 95' 240SX, wut do i need to know before i buy it?? the guy is asking for $5500 drive out, and the car has 92k on it. so far everything works, A/C, healthy clutch, but the shifter is kinda lose(something wrong with the tranny??), the car shakes left and right when i started(is that normal?) and the car is very jerky, for example, when i left it in 2nd and floored and car, when the car started to decel. the car rocks back and forth really bad(shox went out? tranny is about to go? or normal for a RWD?), wut are the charateristic of this car?? it felt like it has no topend power, but i do felt alot of low end torque, and also are there any electrical stuff i have to watch out for?? so any replies going to be helpful, thanx!
btw, i notice some 240sx drive around with 5lugs pattern, this one is 4lugs, can i change it to 5lugs??
Does it have big ass rims on it? I drove a slammed civic once with 18s and that bitch shook all the time decel, accel and turning. The car should jump a little after 3000, but yeah it doesn't have much top end. But for that price that isn't too bad. I paid 7400 (incl. tax) for a 96 manual with 75k. Get a stick though, you will regret it otherwise. You should just get it inspected by a reputable shop or a dealership. I had my 240 checked out by the dealership for like 25 bucks. And you can change it to a 5-lug pattern by taking the parts from a wrecked 240 se. Here is the thread:

They shake on startup, though it should be relatively smooth. As far as the jerkiness in accell and decel, you may just not be used to the torque. You can test the shocks by pushing down on one of the corners 'till you get her rockin', then let go and it should settle without too much more rockin'. Though, keep in mind you look really silly doing something like this.
That's all I have :-)

i had a Maxima, check it out at <a href="www.geocities.com/macdaddydu" target='_blank'>www.geocities.com/macdaddydu</a>
reason why i picked this car is cuz i want to do the SR20det swap. so everything should be ok rite?
I'd definately take it to "your" mech before buying it. I did, there was only about $90 worth of stuff wrong (battery dieing causing crappy startup and strut boots were falling appart). Even if its little stuff like that it give you a bit more to bargen with. I payed 10.2k for my 96 SE with everything and only 43k miles about 3 months ago. If the mech says its not a melon go for it. Great price.

My hesitation would be b/c it is not an SE. The things you mention don't signal any real problem to me... shake on start up is common of RWD b/c of the alignment of the motor; shifter isn't exactly Ferrari spec; torque and a low powerband explain the power curve. However, the SE comes with 5 lug, 16" alloys and a more agressive suspension w/ a rear sway (which may explain the odd rocking).
By the time you swap to 5 lug and/or add wheels comparable to the SE alloys and throw on a sway bar and any other SE goodies (like that handsome lip), I think you are money ahead to just look for the SE. I paid a couple hundred more for more miles and got a nice clean chassis to work with.

I wouldn't buy a base model.

why not chokudori?? i wasn't planning on keeping it stock, coil overs, the SR20DET 5lug conversion so i can use the 300ZX calipers (the rimz on the max too). i made a big mistake on the Maxima, i bought a SE. i pay 10000, more to something that i have to swap out later. check out my old maxima at "<a href="www.geocities.com/macdaddydu" target='_blank'>www.geocities.com/macdaddydu</a>"
I bought a base model and I do not regret it. When I want to I can throw the 300z brakes on it or just put some cross drilled rotor action on it. There are an ass-load of 4 lug rims to choose from and the suspension is usually not left stock anways. I would rather save some cash with a base model and buy parts that I want to put on it. Just my .02 though.

red top means from an s13, a black top engine is from an s14, and is usually variable valve timing, and 220hp rather than 205hp. the boost is turned up a little, but otherwise, there arent any other differences (taht i know of)
