I have a 89 240. I recently got ahold of either a 93' or 94' OR 95' J30 LSD (the paint that labeled the LSD rubbed off) Well, the LSD did not come with output shafts, so I was wondering if I can use the open diff output shafts with the J30 LSD.

while it's possible to stick it into the pumpkin, it won't respond like a lsd, it will be worst than having a open differential. you will need lsd output shaft which will cost a good old $150 at the dealer...

i had a s13 lsd and end up buying a s14 lsd since i thought the s13 one had died out over abuse. after deciding to swap the cover onto the s14 lsd, i inspect the s13 one to find out there was no wear. decided to take out the output shaft and learn that it was a open diff one. put the s14 output shaft on the s13 lsd and then both shaft spins the same direction instantly.

Ok here's a simple and effective soloution.

Take your factory open diff shaft and grind it down, it will fit right in and you will have LSD.

P.S. I am the man. :D

as much as that seems like a good idea
thats only one side

when i got my z32 diff i compared em to a set of open diff output shafts....

while one side can be machined like u said...
the other side, the open diff shaft is wayy too short compared to the vlsd shaft..aka ud still need to buy the long side shaft

I think it works anyway. The long VLSD shaft has splines in the same place the short open one does, just an additional part at the end.

well, i dont "think" it doesnt work, i actually messed around with em. but whatever, they are distinctly different from what i remember

here, i found a link for the long shaft...i cant find my personal pictures..they are on my old computer...

in this picture both the left and right vlsd shafts are pictured..u can see in this picture the length of the long shaft, and how the splines are positioned...the open diff shafts are essentially the same size as the short side shaft....

Read my post, I'm not disagreeing with you that they are different. I've "messed arround" with r200 vlsd, open and clutch diffs. I'm saying that the extra length isnt neccessary for the diff to work.

Though I havent actually ran modified open shafts in a vlsd, never had the need to, this is based on other peoples experiences and what they've posted.

Is there anything I can use to tell if I have a 93 or 94 or 95 J30 LSD?

no one knows?
