I am new to all of this so i guess this is where i should start.....I have a 1989 240sx...my dad had a new master and slave cylinder put on the car by a unworthy mechanic....it wouldnt shift into 1-5 gear before and after he had those installed, it wont go into reverse now. it will go into 1-5 when the car is off, but never into reverse. once i am driving the car, all of the other gears get hard to shift into, or wont at all. they dont grind, just wont go....please help!!!!

Remove the clutch damper box and bleed it again google it, is easy to do

i actually did that, i was trying to bleed it and the bleeder valve sheared off. lol so i hooked the hard line straight into the slave, and bled it. i didnt use a clear tube like most people say, because i cant get to the store. i just bled over and over....would an air bubble make this happen?? i cant get reverse ever...not even when it is off

If it won't go in even when it's off I'd imagine you have a bigger problem than bleeding. I would get a slave with a proper bleeder setup and try again, but not going into gear when off is not good.

oh boy....so i should get a brand new slave?? i know its cheap and have no problem with that, but i wasnt sure if thats what you meant...and if that doesnt do it, any ideas?? maybe the reverse gear is completely shot...i dont know... also its driving me crazy...it goes through 1-5 no problem right away, and as soon as its warmed up, or like 5 minutes has gone by, they start getting hard to shift into or wont at all. thanks man

Is the fluid in the tranny at the proper level? And did this start randomly or was it antagonized by something? If you can get the valve out and replace it with something than you could do that but if you don't have access to one I'd just buy a new slave just to solve your problem since its cheap and could stop you from further damaging things.

fluid levels are good.....the car has been sitting for like 6 years only being driven now and then, and my dad said the gears were getting hard to shift into so he took it in and they replaced the master and slave cylinder...and when he got it back, it had the same problem only no reverse at all..

It being specific to one gear makes me think its the tranny itself, but I'm not 100% on that. I'd try the slave but if it starts out ok then gets bad when it's hot I don't see how it would be the slave. It's cheap enough to try and not be at too much off a loss if its not that.

ya i will try that, i dont get that either though..my dad said sometimes before, it wouldnt work right away for him, he would have to pout it in whatever gear it would go into, and rev it and stay in that gear...

My trans just did this, shortly after I lost reverse 5th went out as well. Pretty sure my 5th/reverse fork broke.

oh great...did you fix it yet?? i suppose the tranny would need to come out for that?

One of the first things people tend to do in my experience is to start changing parts, or bring a car to a mechanic who starts part changing, and often times the problem remains. I recommend doing a lot of reading and consulting to gain the knowledge you need to implement a good diagnostic process.
My advice is to really inspect and become familiar with each component of your hydraulic clutch and start there. Check the grommet on the clutch pedal itself. There is a clevice that attaches the master cylinder rod to the pedal arm itself. A pin and clip attach that clevice to the pedal arm. If the grommet isn't present, or has gotten dry and cracked, there will be just enough play in your pedal that it will not articulate the the clutch fork enough and what you get is a shifter that you either have to ram into gear, or one that won't engage several or any gears at all. Check the bolts for tightness on the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder. Since you are new at this a torque wrench might be a good investment before you break more bolts. Using a torque wrench in beginner mechanics will help you develop a feel for proper bolt torque, and eventually you won't need one as much. most importantly, take your time. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. hope this helps

Nope I just swapped transmissions to a good one which is your better option. I was having other syncro issues as well. I will be rebuilding the transmission just to say I did.

It might possibly be the clutch going bad. sometimes they won't slip but they get hard to get into gear.
