I went into Napa to get oem axles and I brought my axles which look like these. the oem one has 6 bolts in a triangle pattern while mine is 5 in a star pattern. how do I tell what diff I have and what car did these axles originally come from? theres a marking that says "4.5" which I'm assuming is the ratio

Post the measurements of the axles that might help.
Thought I'm no expert from dealing with parts from my A31 Cefiro, it has the 5 bolt diff stock and it is also found in the R32 stock and can be swapped over to the S13/S14 just with a switch of the diff cover.
They originally came with a 4.3 gearing.
Also I picked up a 300zx 5 bolt diff for the 4.08 gearing just to save gas and it bolts up as well again you have to change the diff cover.
You can tell by the cooling fins on the back usually that comes with these units that the US 240sx don't get.
Not sure about JDM versions...
For the axles, I haven't had to change mine yet but it is the same as with any 5 bolt swap for 240sx here. just search for that if thats what your asking.
Not sure which car you have you might want to list all that info.
I use a R32/ S13 rear end and have been told I can use J30 axles I think as well.
I have to look at the tread myself when the time comes...

I hope this helps atleast point you in the right direction or atleast get the ball rolling that someone answered your thread... LOL!

300zx diff i picked up:

yeah i thought it might have been a 300zx diff but when i call parts stores they say the axles are either a 4 bolt or 6 bolt..
and i have a s13 1989 240sx coupe

Try z31 300zx, cause everyone always tells me 300zx but i never get if it's z32 or z31...
might be z31 I just got this from a friend that said it would fit, I just wanted to get better gas mileage for when we go to SEMA and long drives on the freeway.

That's either a JDM 180SX or (more likely) an NA Z32 VLSD, so you'd need axles from an NA 90-96 300ZX or find an Infiniti J30 with the corresponding 5-bolt axles.

That helps me too, thanks!
