I've been racking my brain and the internet and I'm still not 100% clear on which way I should go.

I have a S13 open diff (complete) and a Pathfinder 4.6 ring and pinion. I want to make these 2 items have babies.

My questions is to put the 4.6 in do I need to worry about spacing assuming I take everything apart and put it back together the same way? I'm worried about the spacing of everything. A local shop quoted me 3 hours labor on it and if possible I would like to save that money.

Does anyone have any experiences with this?

You need to have teh whole thing set up.

If you're just throwing in new guts (2way or whatever), you can swap the ring gear and put everything back together the way it came apart.

But pulling the pinion requires reshimming everything to work, so yeah, the job for a shop.

Exactly... You cannot simply swap ring and pinions without having the backlash, preload, pattern and pinion height setup properly. Nor can you swap ring gears to another pinion gear, they are a mated pair.

I simply swapped my ring and pinion into an open s14 diff and welded it, works amazing and 4.6 is perfect in my opinion.

it would probably need to be re-shimmed and definitely check for backlash to be safe. I had mine done when i installed my kaaz super q and 4.3 ring and pinion done.
